Jamari Traylor doesn’t mind not being a star. He would prefer being on a winning team.

Traylor will have a chance to do that again in the Big 12.

“Jamari just signed his NLI for coach Bill Self and Kansas,” IMG Academy (Fla.) director Andy Borman said.

Traylor, a 6-foot-8 power forward from Chicago who played his high school ball at IMG, chose the Jayhawks over Oklahoma State, Indiana and Texas Tech.

"I know coach Self and his coaching staff, and there's a good group of players," Traylor said. "I envision myself there."

Traylor has a very good build and body for a player entering his first year of college. He has good strength and is active at both ends of the floor. Traylor is a very solid rebounder who is not afraid to chase down loose balls and mix it up in the paint. Offensively, he finishes well around the rim and also is developing a face-up jumper.

"I'm a high-energy guy," Traylor said. "I can block shots with the best of them. I'm a defensive-minded player."

With the dearth of inside depth in Lawrence, expect Traylor to step in and produce immediately. He joins a recruiting class that includes top-100 recruits Ben McLemore and Naadir Tharpe, and combo forward Braeden Anderson from Wilbraham and Monson (Mass.).

"I have the best chance of being successful there," Traylor said. "As long as I get a diploma from there, it will be a good decision."

I share your faith in coach Self's ability to develop 3 star players into quailty college players. He and D. Manning got unhearlded players like D. Jackson and the Morris twins to the NBA. However, the 2008 team had Rush, Chamers, Arthur, Collins, Kahn and Aldridge all of them were 4 or 5 star players before they came to Lawrence.

Again I agree that coach Self gets more out of his kids then say Rick Barnes does with all of his McDonalds AA. Bill's won seven straight conference titles. But those who wonder why KU loses to lesser teams in the elite 8 should consider that guys like Morningstar and Reed have worked really hard and were coached up to get the maximum out of their ability. They do just fine in conference but under the pressure of the Big Dance talent usually wins out. Just ask Jim Calhoun and Kemba Walker.

Sure Selby didn't pan out for a number of reasons, but I still think it takes future pros like Mario to make the big shots in the tourney. Every team needs one or to role players like Jackson and R. Robinson in 2008, to compliment the 5 star studs. I just think we're not getting our share of the studs who can lead their teams to final fours.

Jazzy,

We should not allow ourselves to be impressed with recruits only when we beat out Duke, Kentucky and Ohio St.

If Bill Self wants them, that's all I care about...even if we never get another McDonald's AA or not...top ten or not.

We are Kansas...enough said.

I'm not saying that I'd prefer he'd choosen one of those schools. I'm saying I wish he was more like Ben McLemore who chose KU over Ohio State, MU, and Tennessee. It doesn't appear that any top 20 programs were aggresively going after Traylor.

Jazzy, you'd prefer it that we lost him to those schools?

If Coach Self wants him that's good enough for me.

The interest in this signing is likely that it is so late and that it is KU. Traylor, like Marcus and Markieff Morris and Thomas Robinson was not highly ranked and yet a solid pickup for KU. Coach Self today said:

“We have gotten to know him this spring and he’s worked very hard in the classroom. He’s a young guy that really wants to be good. He’s got a motor very similar to Thomas (Robinson) and he’s an athlete that at 6-7 can basically guard all five positions. We think we will be an immediate and major contributor for us.”
That is a very complimentary assessment. Thomas Robinson, you might remember, was a beast as a sophomore last year, Coach Self does emphasize defense and had a thin front court for next year. With a very good weight training program (remember the Morris twins?) and a great big man coach in Danny Manning Jamari Traylor will likely get even stronger and develop good post moves there.

So many fans diss academics for college student-athletes but it appears to be important at KU with a perfect 1000 APR over the past four years. It is a wise man who sees the need to gain his degree and provide an education for later in life.

What do you mean, "As long as I get A diploma from KU, it's all good"? Dude; you can get a degree anywhere you desire if you put out the effort. Not to pick on this "student-athlete", but Indiana and Okie State are way down and forget about Texas Tech. If he's so great, why didn't a single Big 10 school go after him? Personally, I wouldn't go to a Leaders Division school, but I'd keep my options open for the Legends Division.

"I have the best chance of being successful there," Traylor said. "As long as I get a diploma from there, it will be a good decision."

Just seeing that line made me happy to have him as a Jayhawk. If he's got the physical tools (and it sounds like he does) and is willing to put in the work to learn from one of the best coaches for bigs in Coach Manning, he'll do just fine. Glad to see a recruit who has his head in the right place. I just hope he sticks to it...

It's a little disapointing to get a guy whose other choices were Big 12 also rans Tech and OSU along with a rebuilding IU. Hopefully he can learn from D. Manning like the Morris twins did. Neither of the twins were all that highly regarded coming out of high school and they turned out alright. Go Hawks!
