Memphis - Louisville rivalry set to resume

When Louisville left Conference USA for the Big East in 2005, the Cardinals' rivalry with Memphiswas collateral damage. The last time the two programs met was in the 2005 C-USA championship game. The battle for the auto-bid was a real barn-burner (as seen in the video at top) that left Memphis fans wanting more. Looks like they'll get their wish, according to the Memphis Commercial-Appeal.

Though a few details are still to be worked out, Memphis is expected to begin a home-and-home series with Louisville next season at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville. The teams will then play in FedExForum in 2012-13.

“Obviously it’s not official until every formality is finished,” Pastner said. “I’ve had more fans since I’ve gotten the job come to me and say, ‘Coach, can we play a game against Louisville? Can we get a series going against Louisville?’

“So this is sort of an opportunity to give back to the fans since they’ve kept us in the top 10 in attendance; to start a series that means so much to Tiger Nation.”

The two teams have matched up often throughout the years, even as they leapt conferences from the Missouri Valley to Conference USA. Per the blog Card Chronicle, Louisville owns a 51-34 edge in the series to date. With both teams expected to challenge for NCAA tournament berths in upcoming seasons, this is a perfect time to revive the rivalry.

Memphis - Louisville rivalry set to resume

A rivalry that really shouldn’t have ended will recommence next season after today’s announcement that U of L will face Memphis in men’s basketball in each of the next two seasons in the Basketball Hall of Fame Shootout.

They’ll meet on Dec. 17 at 4 p.m. in a CBS game this season, then will play next year’s game at the FedEx Forum.

The Memphis-Louisville rivalry was going strong when U of L left C-USA. The Cardinals were to keep playing a set number of hoops games against C-USA teams (read: Memphis) over the following seasons, but bought out of the arrangements with proceeds from their Final Four trip.

There were some rumblings of a game in subsequent years, but details couldn’t be worked out. And frankly, the relationship of Rick Pitino and John Calipari wasn’t conducive to coming to an agreement, if you catch my drift.

But it’s a game that should be good for both programs. Josh Pastner has Memphis as a projected top 20 team next season, as is U of L. A portion of the game’s proceeds will benefit the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

Or did you just become a UK fan after they dumped Tubby, flopped with Gilispie and hired the cheater?

Memphis - Louisville rivalry set to resume

Somewhere I hear Darius Washington is still on the court crying about missing those freebies in the 2005 C-USA Tourney Championship game with Carney and Dorsey, and PayPal Cal helping him off the floor (ahhhh the memories).  And more to come restarting this rivalry dating back to the Missouri Valley Conference to the Metro Conference and Conference USA, and I lived and loved to hate Memphis (Memphis State when I was a youngster).  Time to show those Tiggers once again who run it, starting with the upcoming 2011 - 12 season!!!!!!  Go Cards, let's get it!!!!!!

UK = irrelevant until they win it all during the modern era.

Those are the facts.

I  would never deny that UK went through some tough times for about 11 years.

But I would not agree on your statement that UK has to win it all to be relevant.

I think as long as they can get to final four or possibly win it, they will be relevant.

Not sure what you are getting at there Popeye, but the facts are plain and simple.  UK has as many national titles and final fours as UofL since 1999.  0 titles and 1 final four.  During that time Duke, Uconn, and UNC have all won the big dance.

UK = irrelevant until they win it all during the modern era.

Those are the facts.

Why are UK fans commenting on this article?  If UK is so great and mighty why would you need to comment on an article about U of L and Memphis?  You wouldnt find Duke or UNC fans commenting on an article about NC State or Wake Forest.  If UK is so awesome, stop worrying about U of L and go comment on an article about UK.

Now they have taken away my freedom of speech.  What's next.

What if I want to worry????
