SEC coaches vote to end basketball divisions

In a move that has been discussed within the league for some time, the SEC basketball coaches voted unanimously to end the current division format and return to the conference to its pre-expansion roots in one basketball division. Under the recommendation, the current East/West basketball divisions would be scrapped to allow for one 12 team league, with a yet to be determined scheduling format. The conference tournament would also be changed, with the top four teams from the regular season receiving byes, replacing the division bye system currently used.

The coaches determined a change was needed after this past season, when five SEC teams from its Eastern division made the NCAA tournament, while the Western division champion, Alabama, was not given a bid. The current set-up required each team in that Eastern division to play the other teams in the division twice. The result was a double-edged sword. The teams from the East ended up with more losses due to the harder schedule, but the Eastern division teams' RPIs were improved in the process. In the West however, a possible tournament team like Alabama finished with a gaudy regular season mark, but found itself left out of the NCAA tournament due to the weak set of Western division teams that it was forced to play two times each during the regular season.

If the change is approved, the conference will use the current East/West scheduling format for next season, but then change for the 2012-2013 campaign. The league will evaluate a number of options, but will likely seek a 16 or 18 game schedule in which more equity is used in determining which teams will be scheduled to play each other twice during the season.

Before you jump all over me, I was being SARCASTIC!!! As for the SEC (I still hate you) but good job for showing the rest of the nation (hey Big East - size doesn't matter) how a conference should be run (not a sarcastic comment).

SEE??? This is what makes the Big Ten a much better conference than the SEC. As a Buckeye fan, I know that my team is either a LEADER or a LEGEND (still can't remember and after the last few weeks, I think we were legends). How dare the SEC put ALL their teams in one conference and play a schedule where you will probably play everyone twice and then have a tourney with one winner! That is what basketball is all about. One conference, one champion. Period. It only took a bunch of fat cats with too much time on their hands to name our divisions which mean absolutely nothing. Good job Big Ten. Way to represent!

About time. In football, divisions make sense, but in basketball, you are going to play every single team at least once, why separate them out. The Big East, however, should consider divisions with that 17 team monstrosity they are trying to pass off as a conference.
