Pitino: SEC is 'second-rate' basketball league

Rick Pitino's capability for a good quote has too often gone overlooked. Thankfully, in the doldrums of June, college basketball's second-worst month of the year (only August is worse), Pitino has delivered some fighting words. Words that will have some lasting impact by the time Kentucky and Louisville play each other around New Year's Eve.

And the words aren't even directed at Kentucky -- they're a shot at the SEC. The Louisville coach sent a verbal barb flying Wednesday in the direction of the conference, a clear response to something John Calipari said last week.

After the SEC ditched its two-division format, opting to have one league with 12 teams, giving the league a better chance at more NCAA tournament teams, Cal said, "This is no knock on the Big East but they’ve had 19 teams in the tournament the last two years and how many have made it by the first round? How is this happening? When they start playing each other they say the 11th team is really good. What? We have to figure out how you play the best schedule you can play and still win. That’s different for all of us. I think that’s more important than 16 or 18 (conference) games."

Card Chronicle also brings up the fact Calipari, in March, said the Big East is a product of "media hype." So Pitino, the former Kentucky coach who led them to a title in '96, clearly knew what he was doing when he said this:

The coach jabbed back just a bit tonight at a Cardinal Caravan event in Shelbyville. When introducing his son, Richard, to the crowd, he said:

"(Richard) went away for a couple of years to learn how to do things in a second-rate league, then get back to the big time."

Richard Pitino spent the past two seasons in the SEC as an assistant under Billy Donovan, a Pitino disciple. It's as much a playful jab as it is an under-the-surface shot. And a truthful one. The Big East has been a better league than the SEC for most of its existence. Undeniable. And Kentucky, you'll remember, saw its 2011 season end in the Final Four at the hands of Connecticut, a Big East team.

Pitino: SEC is 'second-rate' basketball league

Read the title of the article! Only UK fans tried to twist this article to find a way to bash Pitino.  You're upset he left we all know.  The greatest time in UK basketball history that you witnessed was under him, so that would make me upset to...now you just need to admit that to yourself, and then you can get over it!!!

I did read the article moron. And Pitino doesn't need help from anyone to bring criticisim onto himself. Go read your teams own page and you'll find several UL fans that do plenty of that on their own.

But the truely laughable thing is you probably actually believe some of the crap you write here as having truth to it. How many times do I have to prove you're a delusional fruitcake in need of psychiatric care and strong medication before you go away. Like your coach should've done several years ago after the Sypher deal.

Just shameful. And again like I've already stated previously many many times over I never wanted Pitino at Kentucky in the first place. Much less after he left. Get over yourself. Nobody wants him anymore. He already shot his wad so to speak in more ways than one. Pitino is just waiting around until he can make it look as if he had an offer that he just couldn't refuse and then he'll be gone in the middle of the night just like Bobby Petrino. Face it. Calipari owns him in Kentucky. He can't compete. He's out recruited, out classed, and living in Calipari's shadow. FACT.

He tried to bring in Tim Fuller remember? a Nike guy right? To a school sponsered by adidas to keep up with Calipari and still can't keep step. Fuller left after one season and then all of a sudden all those recruits are de-committing left and right. Why? Because he's done. Kids don't want to play for him anymore. Not the elite anyway. And why is that you suppose....probably because they don't want to sit on the bench for four years behind others that are less talented than they are and end up playing in a Euro league as their career or take a chance on getting hurt in s scrum practice trying to prove themselves to almight rick that they're good enough to play and get in a game for a couple of minutes.

Wake up. Go talk to stainhead(a UL fan) if you don't believe me or want to except the truth. Fact of the matter is I'm glad Pitino is at UL....because as long as he is he'll continue to get dominated by Calipari on and off the court. Unlike someone like say Billy Donovan that can recruit, and can coach that could actually make things a little interesting in the Commonwealth.

Also, FYI the greatest time in UK history didn't involve Rick Pitino slick. Many would argue that probably had something to do with Adolph Rupp when he was in the middle of winning four national titles.

Pitino: SEC is 'second-rate' basketball league

You have got to be kidding...ACC #1...over the past few yrs?  It absolutely kills you that the Big East has been the best basketball conference the last few yrs, so much you can't even admit it, not because its the Big East its because that is where UL is...Thats like me hating on the SEC in football just because UK is in that conference...delusional....hahahaha

Pitino: SEC is 'second-rate' basketball league

I'm sure Rick was talking about women's soccer, baseball , field hockey, swimming and so on when he said the SEC was a second rate conference.  Let me ask you one question, and I will end this ridiculous argument.

Well I guess that makes you a mind reader too like the rest of the UL fanbase since all of ya'll are so sure that's what he meant even though that's not what he said was it.

Where would you rank the SEC in basketball over the last few years, using the top 6 conferences?

Since the SEC has been down the last few years I would rank them in the following order: ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, and the PAC. Having said that I believe everything is cyclical and the SEC is now on an upswing from being down the past few seasons.

Overall though if you're using RPI and SOS from the past ten or twelve seasons then the SEC makes up alot of ground and jumps several of the others. So really it just depends on how small of a sample you want to look at to base your opinions on.

I think we should keep our personal opinions out of this matthew since that's all this is to begin with. But keep one thing in mind and that is your opinion does not make you any more correct than anyone else here. And as far as that goes I think you're a delusional idiot but that's just me. Now please explain to me how I missed the whole point of the article genius.

Since Pitino did not specify basketball did he? He simply stated a second rate league. That implies an association of sports clubs or teams that compete against each other in sports.....not one sport.

Obviously he's talking about basketball

Really? And how did you come to that hypothesis Ms. Cleo? And for your information I wasn't pulling stats from 13 years ago. Those stats I posted regarding conference RPI and SOS where from the 1998-99 season FORWARD. Meaning that it includes all seasons from then until now. And since you can't count that's 12 years not 13. But that's probably to far back for you isn't it since now you're probably going to say we where still throwing footballs at peach baskets in 1998.

Pitino's recruits. Tubbys team. Ok smart guy then why did Pitino state many times over that he couldn't have won the national title with the players that Tubby won it with in '98. I'm sure you don't recall since that was probably ten or twelve years ago and you seem to have the attention span of a gnat but you can look it up. Google is your friend.

P.S. You're wrong again. They where Ricks recruits. Are you having fun yet? I am. I normally abstain from battles of the wit with unarmed individuals but I have to admit this has been entertaining.

Pitino: SEC is 'second-rate' basketball league

I think the whole point of the article was to generate attention....not by the author of the story...but by Coach Cal and Coach Pitino.  The author is just the messenger.

I don't believe the two of them got together and worked up a story...but with the amount of fan hate between UofL and UK....these two are keeping the pot stirred.

The reason Coach Rick said anything...the reason why Coach Cal said anything...was so we would get 16 pages of fan hate.

Both Coaches have kept their teams in the spot light....not a UofL or UK player has been mentioned....all the heat is on Cal and Pitino and the presses are just a spinning.  Both have been accused of evil things, yet are still employed at the top of their games.  And they take those dark passages and turn them into sunshine.

Look at both locations were these teams play.  And before anyone slams me on how old Rupp arena is...it is By God "Rupp" Areena. And UofL has the Bucket.  What great places.

Coach Calipari and Coach Pitino are masters at playing the universe.  And both are entertaining as hell.  Throw in good bball too.....man...you guys got it made.

Pitino: SEC is 'second-rate' basketball league

I think you missed the whole point of the article, i never read where Rick said the SEC has been a second rate conference since 1998 or was talking about the SEC as a whole.  He referenced his son who coaches basketball  "[Richard] went away for a couple of years to learn how to do things in a second-rate league, then get back to the big time"  Obviously he's talking about basketball...The Big East has only recently been considered the best basketball conference in the country so you pulling stats from 13 years ago mean nothing!!!

And as for tubby being the coach yeah, but those were Pitino's recruits but we know because you are a UK fan you would never admit to something like that...

Pitino: SEC is 'second-rate' basketball league

I will be flying SU's flag all year.
I kinda figured you would. Wink But that was a great breakdown and a great post so five stars for that one I enjoyed the read. Even if you did forget about UK bringing back Doron Lamb and another freshman power forward that's going to tear things up in Kyle Wiltjer lol.

I say SU wins it all.  But I always think they will.
Well we're all homers lol, so I'll have to go with Kentucky this year(since I didn't last year or the year before) and pick them to win number eight and Cal to get that monkey off his back plus the wins stick and so does the title. Surprised

That'll rub some cardinal rear ends raw. And that thar pitner feller will be lookin' for a new place to choke....I mean coach..Tongue out

But like you I can't wait for the games to start! I'm ready for some college basketball.
