Pitino believes his Big East schedule is unfair

By Matt Norlander

The Big East intra-conference schedule was released yesterday. Here's what Rick Pitino had to say about it:

"We have one of the premier commissioners in athletics, but whoever's doing our scheduling must be doing it with a Ouija board. How can you play two of the top three (projected) teams in the league twice and have to play another top team that's a rival game (at Cincinnati) on the road for a second straight year? It just doesn't make any sense to me. West Virginia has a similar argument. They must be doing it with a Ouija board."

OK, that was in Louisville's press release. Crafted by the school and looked over by a few people before it was shot out to the public. And that's the quote Pitino chose to supply and the school was cool going with.

All I can say is ... awesome.

If that was the quote that was allowed, then Pitino must be really pissed. Without the filter of Louisville's athletic department offices, who knows what sort of disgust Pitino would have spit had a reporter got him one-on-one. By the way, here's Louisville's schedule: home games against Connecticut, DePaul, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, USF, Syracuse and Villanova; on the road versus Cincinnati, DePaul, Marquette, Pittsburgh, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, Syracuse and West Virginia.

Yeah, it's tough, but not the toughest. Look at that link, and you'll see other schools who have harder 18-gamers within the conference. And, to channel Dan Hawkins, it's the Big East! Tough games are coming, and the better you are and more high-profile you are, the more rigorous the schedule, generally, because TV dictates a lot of what goes on here. Pitino and Louisville are big sells. He knows that.

This is his only way of fighting back. Let's wait and see what the non-conference schedule looks like for Louisville, when the school releases it in a few weeks. If it's loaded, we'll know why Pitino's got his britches in a bunch. If it's weak, then this is nothing more than whining.

Pitino believes his Big East schedule is unfair

Kentucky has actually been eliminated recently by more current Big East teams than they realize.

2011 UCONN
2010 West Virginia
2009 Notre Dame
2008 Marquette
2007 Kansas
2006 UCONN
2005 Michigan State
2004 UAB-- Conference USA
2003 Marquette
2002 Maryland
2001 USC
2000 Syracuse
1999 Michigan State

7 of the last 13 seasons by my count.

Pitino believes his Big East schedule is unfair

Why do people write in all CAPS? Honestly - why? Other than some grammatical errors, I understand what you wrote - but what does this have to do with Pitino believing the Big East schedule is unfair?

Pitino believes his Big East schedule is unfair

THATS GREAT THAT THE BIG EAST KNOCKED UK FROM THE NCAA TOURNAMENT THE LAST 4 OF 5 YEARS. THE BIG EAST IS A GOOD LEAGUE BUT IM A KY FAN AND WISH THE SEC WAS A BETTER LEAGUE BUT I BELIEVE THAT THIS YEAR THAT THE SEC WILL SPORT 3 OR 4 TEAMS THAT HAVE THE TALENT TO MAKE THE FINAL 4. KY AND VANDERBILT ESPECIALLY. ALL YOU KY HATERS OUT THERE HATE MOST OF ALL THE SUCCESS THAT KY HAS HAD IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL. I ADMIT THAT THERE HAVE BEEN SOME DARK TIMES IN LEXINGTON WHEN IT COMES TO RULES VIOLATIONS BUT A FEW BAD APPLES DONT SPOIL THE WHOLE BUSHEL. CALIPARI RECRUITS THE BEST PLAYERS POSSIBLE OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL WHICH IS WHAT HE IS SUPPOSED TO DO. I DONT ALWAYS AGREE WITH THIS POLICY BUT TALENT USUALLY WINS OUT IN THE END, BESIDES THE NBA MAY TAKE THAT COURSE OF RECRUITING OUT OF HIS HANDS IF THEY REMOVE THE 1 YEAR IN COLLEGE RULE WHICH I REALLY THINK IS STUPID. WHY MAKE A KID GO TO COLLEGE FOR 1 YEAR WHEN HE COULD GO STRAIGHT TO THE NBA AND MAKE MILLONS. IF THE NBA IS GOING TO EMPLOY A RULE IT SHOULD BE AT LEAST 2 YEARS OR 3 WHICH WOULD ALSO MAKE THE NBA BETTER. SOME OF THE TEAMS IN THE NBA LOOK PITIFUL WITH 9 OR 10 OF THEIR TEAMS ROSTER BEING UNDER 23 OR 24.

Pitino believes his Big East schedule is unfair

I'm quite confident the my boys will be in the thick of things with a deep Big East and NCAA tourney run, and stopping the madness of these first round flops.  They overachieved to the point that a few teams didn't see it coming and that's how U of L works best.

Card4life- Quite a mouthful,heh.

They overachieved( I assume you are talking about UL not Morehead State)seems like a OVERSTATEMENT.

Unless my memory serves me incorrectly, UL lost to 13th seed, Morehead State.  But they overachieved.  Can you explain that to me again.  Either my hearing is going bad or...

So if UL lost to Morehead State, what was the reason.

1.  UL tough(???) schedule didn't prepare them for the 13th seed,Morehead

2.  UL and Big East teams were ranked too highly and in reality weren't on par equal to the OVC conference???

So which one was it.  Overachieving or Underachieving???

Now if Rick(family man) can find enough time to coach instead of laying in wait for his next sexual conquest at the closest restaurant, they might improve.  Even might  improve on his 15 seconds and advance to 30 seconds next time.

By the way playing all those tough teams in the Big East might prepare you to advance past the 1st round for a nice change.

Pitino believes his Big East schedule is unfair

And to the team east of us on I-64, you'll never achieve greatness with one and dones, under the PayPal Cal's "buy a championship with dufflebags of cash" principles.  Talented yes, skilled yes, title caliber team yes, worthy of winning it all, by all means NO because of the youth movement Cal has at UK.  Eventually sending guys to the league will be as meaningless, as the NCAA keeping up with Cal's actual win total (another embarassment of riches).  I've said it once and I'll say it again, it's only a matter of time when that Final Four Banner will be snatched from the rafters of Rupp, then Cal will have that trifecta completed (calling Marcus Camby and Derrick Rose).

See this is exactly what I'm talking about. Why all the bitterness and hate. There's no need for any of this. We can go back and forth at each other all day every day and it's not going to change a damn thing. I can just as easily make mean and nasty comments about sticky ricky, ankle bracelet u and the big least as well but what's the point.

Why not put away the vitriol and worry about what matters most to you. Like your team. Instead of a team, or a coach, or even a fanbase you're not apart of. I'll never understand that twelve year old mentality that thinks they have to spew hate towards everything and everyone.

Also Catsfaninva is right. You can't have it both ways. Either you like being in a tough conference and playing tough schedules or you simply don't. Pitino was the one that pushed for UL to move to a tougher conference when the opportunity presented itself to leave Conference USA back in 2006. And now he's crying and singing the blues about it.

Why? To what end? Does anyone here really think that Pitino doesn't manipulate the media? Like the Sypher deal...He ranted and raved and carried on like a madman when that first came out and pretty much intimidated the local news media from discussing the topic altogether for quite awhile. Remember the Ted Kennedy quote? I'm just saying that he obviously has some sort of underlying ulterior motive in this.

And like I wrote before he's up to something, the man isn't stupid. Either he's practicing that theory about all press being good press and drawing attention to himself and to UL by his words or he's preparing everyone for when he cancels the UL-UK series. Why? Because obviously UL isn't going to leave the Big East so that rules that out as a means to take some of the pressure off of playing a tough schedule. And most people are aware of the fact that he was the main reason that UL canceled the Memphis series in 2006 when UL left for the Big East and Calipari was still coaching Memphis. Now all of a sudden it's back on again.

Just a couple months ago he was complaining about the Big East/SEC challenge matchups this season and UL's draw against Vanderbilt. Said that it was good for the fans but he didn't like since Vanderbilt was a top five team this season.

Obviously he's not going to cancel that series. So who's out? RationalCat pointed out that Butler has pretty much lost everyone that had anything to do with their last two championship game appearances so I really don't see them being a problem for UL. Now or in the future. Western Kentucky hasn't been much the last couple of seasons either.

So who's his main nemesis? Most bitter enemy that he can't seem to beat in recruiting or on the basketball court? I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count. Even a ten year old knows the answer to this question. John Calipari. There's so much hate and resentment there on both sides it seems that it's not even funny. Even the fanbases despise each other and all you have to do is read the bolded comments above to know this is fact not fiction.

And what would UL lose by not playing UK? Not a damn thing now. Except maybe bragging rights in the state of Kentucky "IF" they manage to win. And we all know how that's worked out since Calipari and not some drunk or one of Pitino's buddies is coaching at Kentucky. I just feel this is a clear case of him knowing he's outmanned and outgunned while Calipari is at UK and him saying and preparing everyone for when he and Jurich pull the plug on the series since there's much less to gain from it now than in the past, and his way of saying you know what? We'll just take our ball and go home. We don't need you since we play in the Big East.

Which is fine by me. I was against the series back in the eighties when the Kentucky legislature got involved for the lack of anything better to do I suppose and threatened to pull state funding from Kentucky if they didn't agree to the series. Yep a state funded school and they threatened to pull scholarship funding from them because of a basketball game.

Watch and see. If it's Pitino's agenda to water down the OOC schedule it'll start and end with the UK series.

Pitino believes his Big East schedule is unfair

Talk about idiots, the big east knocked uk out of the tournament the last 4 or 5 years!

KCards, this is an example of a Card response that I will use as an example for years to come. UK has been knocked out of the tournament, by a Big East opponent, their last 3 NCAA appearances.  That is not 4 or 5 to me, is it?  Before that, it was 2003 against Marquette, or roughly Dwyane Wade and Company.

08- Marquette
10- West Virginia
11- UConn

So KCard, please refrain from calling people idiots, when you are having trouble not being one your self!

Pitino believes his Big East schedule is unfair

Card4life, UNLV just lost their head coach this past season, Butler just lost Shelvin Mack(to the NBA) and Matt Howard to graduation, and Western Kentucky has not been close to tough the last couple of years.  So, please do not say that those are going to be some "brutal non-conf. games"!

<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;">
So, a UL fan is telling UK fans, that they will never achieve greatness with Cal's system, in which he has taken UK to an Elite-8 and and Final-4 in his first 2 seasons, while Pitino has gone to one Final-4 in his 10 seasons at UL!  Do you rationally think UL is going to keep all of their 2011 recruiting class for 4 years?!  How long do you think Blackshear will be there?  Im sorry, but these kids are a product of the system!  This is a system that the NBA dictates, and not Cal!  Oh, and sorry, but if you think a bunch of good recruits are coming to UL because of your great tradition, and because they have dreamed about playing for the Cards, then you are delusional.  The Cards have not won the chip since I was 2, and these kids do not remember any of that!  What do they remember?  They remember teams like UK's this past season.  UK lost 5 players to the draft, 1 to graduation (Perry Stevenson), and 1 to transfer (Darnell Dodson), for a total of 7 players gone for the 2010-11 season.  On top of that, Enes Kanter was found permanently ineligible!  So with a heavy Freshmen team, which had a senior Center who barely played prior to the season, UK won the SEC tourney championship, and went to a Final-4!  What does that show recruits?  It shows that Cal can coach, and that he is one of the best developers of freshmen talent (by a long ways)!  Who in their right mind would have thought that Josh Harrellson would have been drafted in the 2nd round of the NBA draft, before this past season?  His success alone, is providing his developmental accolades, an even brighter sheen.

Oh, and if you think Cal is the only one recruiting these players, then why did Ricky P. go after Teague sooo hard?  Why does Coach K recruit them?  You have to play with the cards you are delt, and Cal, can play!

it's only a matter of time when that Final Four Banner will be snatched from the rafters of Rupp.

For that to happen, UK would have had to do something wrong in that year, and I am sorry, but that is not even remotely going to be a possibility.  UK did not play Kanter, and already had a thin roster.  It seems like you are preying a little too much, in this case.

Go Cats!

well why don't you cry about it rick? your attitude is self defeating. you assume these teams are great. you don't know what the future holds. and your conference is so over rated it's pathetic. uconn was lucky to win last year. you can thank the tremendous talent of walker for that.

Pitino believes his Big East schedule is unfair

He's quick to call the SEC a second rate league, but then complains about his "superior" league's tough schedule.   how stupid is that?

Make up your mind, either you like being in a tough conference, or you don't.
