Pitino believes his Big East schedule is unfair

By Matt Norlander

The Big East intra-conference schedule was released yesterday. Here's what Rick Pitino had to say about it:

"We have one of the premier commissioners in athletics, but whoever's doing our scheduling must be doing it with a Ouija board. How can you play two of the top three (projected) teams in the league twice and have to play another top team that's a rival game (at Cincinnati) on the road for a second straight year? It just doesn't make any sense to me. West Virginia has a similar argument. They must be doing it with a Ouija board."

OK, that was in Louisville's press release. Crafted by the school and looked over by a few people before it was shot out to the public. And that's the quote Pitino chose to supply and the school was cool going with.

All I can say is ... awesome.

If that was the quote that was allowed, then Pitino must be really pissed. Without the filter of Louisville's athletic department offices, who knows what sort of disgust Pitino would have spit had a reporter got him one-on-one. By the way, here's Louisville's schedule: home games against Connecticut, DePaul, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, USF, Syracuse and Villanova; on the road versus Cincinnati, DePaul, Marquette, Pittsburgh, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, Syracuse and West Virginia.

Yeah, it's tough, but not the toughest. Look at that link, and you'll see other schools who have harder 18-gamers within the conference. And, to channel Dan Hawkins, it's the Big East! Tough games are coming, and the better you are and more high-profile you are, the more rigorous the schedule, generally, because TV dictates a lot of what goes on here. Pitino and Louisville are big sells. He knows that.

This is his only way of fighting back. Let's wait and see what the non-conference schedule looks like for Louisville, when the school releases it in a few weeks. If it's loaded, we'll know why Pitino's got his britches in a bunch. If it's weak, then this is nothing more than whining.

Pitino believes his Big East schedule is unfair

I feel like there is more to this than the press is getting a hold of, and the author did a good job of noting that. Is Pitino worried about the upcoming season? Feel that the Big East is getting out of control with scheduling?  If what Pitino is arguing is all on the surface, in the form of this press release, then this is simply him being a blowhard.

The "Wold-wide leader in sports" mentioned this is not the first time he's done this. He did it back in 2007.

“The Big East killed us this year with our schedule. It’s not fair, it’s not objective. These guys are my friends, or ex-friends,” Pitino, speaking in jest, told a group of 1,200 boosters on Tuesday. “They’re Italian. I will get revenge. It’s just an unfortunate situation, but we’ll get through it.”

Pitino believes his Big East schedule is unfair

I'll go ahead and this out there.  I'm not a Pitino bandwagon member, I am however a U of L fan to the fullest.  I feel it isn't fair that the Cards have to play Syracuse (2), Pitt (2) both to which are looking at being preseason top 15 clubs, and then have to play Cincy on the road for the second consecutive season, then you throw in a somewhat brutal nonconference slate against the likes of UK, Vandy, Memphis, at UNLV, at Butler, WKU.  I was quite surprised with the Card's progress of last season rising as high as 11th in the nation, and this season with the clase that we have coming in, and the veterans we still have, I'm quite confident the my boys will be in the thick of things with a deep Big East and NCAA tourney run, and stopping the madness of these first round flops.  They overachieved to the point that a few teams didn't see it coming and that's how U of L works best.  And to the team east of us on I-64, you'll never achieve greatness with one and dones, under the PayPal Cal's "buy a championship with dufflebags of cash" principles.  Talented yes, skilled yes, title caliber team yes, worthy of winning it all, by all means NO because of the youth movement Cal has at UK.  Eventually sending guys to the league will be as meaningless, as the NCAA keeping up with Cal's actual win total (another embarassment of riches).  I've said it once and I'll say it again, it's only a matter of time when that Final Four Banner will be snatched from the rafters of Rupp, then Cal will have that trifecta completed (calling Marcus Camby and Derrick Rose).

I mean sec (second - easy-class)

Oh really.....You know two can play that game for example Big Least....or how about OVC.....Owned the Ville's Criminals? I guess they're a second or even third class conference by your higher standards right KCard. Funny how some of you guys listen to the idiots in the media and always thump your chests about how great the Big East is and then when it comes time to play basketball ya'll fold up like a cheap lawn chair. And it's always wait till next year or wait until football season.

Here's a little hint for you. Notice how the smart UofL fans don't get into silly arse pissin' contests but there's always a half a dozen of you idiots out there that do. And yes the last couple of seasons in basketball the Big East has been the best overall. But if you look at the last ten years the statistics prove that the ACC has been consistently the best followed closely by the Big Ten and the SEC.

What you twelve year olds fail to realize is that these things are cyclic.....Some years a particular conference will be up and others they'll be down. This upcoming season just so happens will be a down year for the Big East compared to the last two.

And just so you know we're waiting. See ya in Rupp son. If Vandy don't get you first in the Chikin Coop.

Fair, I'm not saying that the SEC West does not suck!  They do, big time!  Yet, the East with UK, Florida, Vandy (you forgot them) and Tennessee (last 5 years) are pretty dynamite.  Plus, I bet Alabama will only continue to get better, with the recruiting they are doing, and Arkansas might get things going with Mike Anderson at the helm.  Now, I will say that Tennessee will fall from the graces, and probably be bad for a few years to come.  Oh, and please do not compare the ACC and the SEC, to one another.  The SEC had more then 2 teams consistently ranked and competing with one-another, while the gap in the ACC has gotten ridiculous.  Duke and N. Carolina, have no other competition, other then an occasional Florida St.  Wake Forest, Miami, and even Maryland(other then their title year) fall from grace, or never live up to potential year-in-year-out.

How did the Big East-SEC challenge go last season?

You can't judge a conference by a few of the teams, i.e. Florida and KY.  If that were the case then the ACC is the toughest conference nearly every year or the Horizon league was a great conference.

The SEC is a tier 2 basketball conference and the top tier football conference.

I love how the SEC 'a second class conference' does better (more Elite-8 teams) then the mighty Big East in the NCAA tournament.  Yes, UConn won the tourney last season, but how many teams get in from that monster of a conference, and still disappoint?  Shall I call Charles Barkley to silence Ricky P's whining.  Ol' Rick wines about his draw with his conference doubles, when they got a 2 game gift against Depaul!  Ricky should just go and schedule 13 out of 14 non-conference home games to start the season, like last year!  That should help quench his bitter taste.

When you don't play in a second class conference you have a right to complain.

By second class do you mean C-USA or the old Metro conference you guys used to play in?
