Duke and the NCAA are investigating whether an NCAA recruiting rule was violated when coach Mike Krzyzewski reportedly offered a scholarship to a recruit during a summer tournament.

The scholarship offer to five-star prospect Alex Poythress came on Tuesday night, after Poythress’ AAU team was eliminated from the AAU Super Showcase in Orlando, Fla.

Poythress confirmed the offer to CBSSports.com on Thursday, and said he spoke to Krzyzewski when he received the offer.

“It felt pretty good,” Poythress said of the offer. “It was pretty exciting to talk to Coach K. He said he saw me play at the Super Showcase and Peach Jam, and he liked what he saw.”

NCAA rules prevent coaches from contacting players before they are finished playing in tournaments. While the Georgia Stars were indeed eliminated from the Super Showcase, they were still in Orlando for the AAU Nationals. Players have to be dispersed from the team in order for a coach to talk to them.

On Sunday, Duke responded via spokesman Jon Jackson. “Proper adherence to NCAA bylaws has always been, and will continue to be, a cornerstone of Duke athletics,” the statement said.

Poythress is a 6-foot-7 forward from Northeast (Tenn). He is ranked No. 15 in CBSSports.com’s Top 100.

Information from the AP was used in this report.

As a Duke fan, if the NCAA proves Coach K did it, then throw the book at him.  No one should be above the rules, not OSU, not USC, not UNC, not Duke.....

Dirty Duke ??

We have been listening to the holier-than-thou ramblings of Duke fans for ages.....how sacred their beloved Coach K is, how they are so far above any possible NCAA violations.......and now we have these rock throwers right in the middle of a glass house. This is absolutely hilarious to me.....hopefully, the NCAA will find malice intended and a huge cover-up of countless related infractions......sanctimony is a tough position to retreat from.......and Duke will learn that lesson the hard way.

I'll bet the phone lines to Bombay and Beijing are burning up as undergrads call home to inform their parents of this !!!

Big Stack is correct. The NCAA rules and regulations is a joke. The NCAA has made it impossible for the coaches to understand all of its intricacies/rules.  Here is what the executive morons do in their offices to keep revenue flowing for the NCAA.  They take turns throwing darts at a map then decide which programs they are going to go after and violate.

Again, there is no such thing as a clean program in any major div.1 sport. Just the caught cheating and the not yet caught cheating!

This sounds like a technicality to me.  I mean seriously he talked to a kid after he was eliminated from the tournament.  It's not like he called a timeout walked onto the court and offered the kid.   Yeah he was still at the tournament but he was done playing.  Big deal.  If he'd have offered him a car or cash then that'd be news but this is garbage and i hate Dook.

"The NCAA is so mad they are going to put Creighton on probation!" - funny stuff.

But seriously there is an invaluable life lesson to be learned here people. If Coach K comes up to you in a public place and offers to 'give you a free ride' and 'change your life' and 'take you someplace special'.. you might want to consider it. But.. if you run into Rick Pitino in a public place, and he makes you the same offers... RUN! Happy Thursday Everybody! Cool
