Duke and NCAA investigating possible violation

Duke and the NCAA are investigating whether an NCAA recruiting rule was violated when coach Mike Krzyzewski reportedly offered a scholarship to a recruit during a summer tournament.

The scholarship offer to five-star prospect Alex Poythress came on Tuesday night, after Poythress’ AAU team was eliminated from the AAU Super Showcase in Orlando, Fla.

Poythress confirmed the offer to CBSSports.com on Thursday, and said he spoke to Krzyzewski when he received the offer.

“It felt pretty good,” Poythress said of the offer. “It was pretty exciting to talk to Coach K. He said he saw me play at the Super Showcase and Peach Jam, and he liked what he saw.”

NCAA rules prevent coaches from contacting players before they are finished playing in tournaments. While the Georgia Stars were indeed eliminated from the Super Showcase, they were still in Orlando for the AAU Nationals. Players have to be dispersed from the team in order for a coach to talk to them.

On Sunday, Duke responded via spokesman Jon Jackson. “Proper adherence to NCAA bylaws has always been, and will continue to be, a cornerstone of Duke athletics,” the statement said.

Poythress is a 6-foot-7 forward from Northeast (Tenn). He is ranked No. 15 in CBSSports.com’s Top 100.

Information from the AP was used in this report.

The NCAA will be so mad at Duke, they'll give N.C. A&T two more years of probation!

It's a rule and it was broken and Coach K should come out and say he made a mistake and Duke should take some sort of action.  This way it is clear that Duke won't take these types of things lightly.  It won't be as bad of a "mistake" if this was still a player who was still in the tournament but it's still a broken rule and Coach K knows better.

Is this the NCAA's lastest desperate attempt to look legitimate? What a waste of an organization. Excuse me. Not organization--what a waste of building space. Some upstanding organization should have all that space...Quizno's, perhaps.

I hated the NCAA while I was in school, and I hate them more now that I've been out for over a decade. What a bunch of crooks, shat stirrers, and liars. They are the blackest of black pots, trying to call anything and everything a black kettle. If I ever enjoy extreme influential power, I will lead the charge against those crooks.

Coach K probably told the kid he'd look good in Duke blue and everyone is saying he offered a scholarship.

Agree completely.  As a UK fan, i'm obligated to hate Duke, but Coach K is totally clean.  He's a real class act, and I hope the powers that be drop this non-issue.

Maybe I missed it but which blue chip prospect did Jim Calhoun illegally recruit that helped him win any games? None of the infractions involved any player  that ACTUALLY suited up for even a practice. So how can Uconn be penalized by canceling wins or championships. I do agree that the NCAA is a joke and does not enforce rules evenly. Even here Coach K gets bad press just because he is from a high profile program. Penalize everyone with the same scrutiny.

Are you saying Carolina is not a well-run classy program??  Or just angry that they own the Spartans.  Coach Williams is one of the classiest coaches in college basketball.  I'd put Coach Izzo on that list too.  Coach K not so classy.

I think the NCAA needs to take a good look at themselves with the multitude of rules they have.  It is crazy with the massive amount of do's and don't coaches have to live by these days.  Hell, you want to offer a schloarship to a basketball recruit, who in the hell cares when and where you offer it?  Yea, yea, I know all about the rules, but when you look at it from face value, for crying out loud, how horrible is this?  The NCAA gets bigger and bigger, and all they do is make more and more rules.  Someone should be investigating the NCAA and their ironclad way of ruling collegiate sports.  They can go after anyone they want and ruin and coach or program. No University is clean according to the NCAA way of life.  NCAA rules equals job security for the NCAA.

This will be a minor violation.  The NCAA is all about having the controls in place to catch and self-investigate/report these instances; it's almost impossible for a program to not have any, ever.  If they uncovered something like this to not be an isolated incident and found evidence of covering up (Tressel), that's when they would take issue.
