Calipari tosses veiled shot at Coach K on radio

By Matt Norlander

Audio's at the bottom of the post, if you'd like to hop right to it. Frankly, I don't see how this isn't John Calipari lobbing a grenade the way of Mike Krzyzewski.

Calipari was on Memphia-area radio Thursday morning morning, a guest for "Sportstime with George Lapides," on Sports 56 WHBQ.

Before the knock at K came, Calipari was waxing -- which he's been prone to do as of late -- on the state of collegiate athletics, what's wrong, what can be fixed, etc. The man has many ideas, some of which do make a lot of sense. But his stream-of-consciousness suddenly took an abrupt turn when, while talking about the problems of college basketball spanning over two semesters, while football is just one, he then moved on to the NCAA needing an outside board with subpoena power.

And then the thinly veiled shot on Krzyzewski being Teflon to phone-call rules came whizzing by.

"Start a clean slate," Calipari said. "Police each other, give it to league commissioners and schools to deal with. If it goes beyond that, there's a board there that's ready to deal with it. ... You've got coaches being fired over phone calls and text messages. Some. Other guys can make phone calls and it's not that big a deal."

There's a kaboom.

If you've spent the past few weeks on vacation, Calipari is referring to our initial report, wherein a top prospect admitted he talked to Krzyzewski during the July recruiting period. Duke is now working with the NCAA to decipher if a violation occurred, and if so, a minor punishment would likely ensue.

Calipari, for the record, has never publicly been dinged for a phone-call or text-message violation -- though it was reported he did have a former assistant break such rules while at Memphis and in his first year at UK.

Wow.  Well when you're right you're right.

Coach K DID make a phone call and the NCAA has done nothing about what everyone including the media see as a clear violation.
To me, any coach that gets reprimanded by the NCAA at this point should file discrimination law suits against the NCAA because there definitely is a double standard at work here.

Truth be told

There is no question in my mind that the NCAA is considerably more prone to give Coach K the benefit of the doubt, conversely they spend money out of their budget trying to pick the fly crap out of the pepper with Kentucky. Hey, Coach K broke a rule, just admit it, take the penalty, and move on......They would have given Cal the death penalty had it happened to him. Be consistent.

Facts are, the NCAA is a broken institution. It needs to be replaced or re-invented. The new president, Emmel, is a joke. He has botched every opportunity he's had in his early tenure.

Here's the thing.  I am not going to vilify or defend Calipari.  But Duke fans need to suck it up.  Any criticism over the Maggette case is justified.  Let's face it.  Duke reaped the benefits of an ineligible player and did not have to pay the piper.  So some of us choose to tell you the truth about the case.  So Duke fans have to listen to a broken record about Maggette.  What's so bad about that.  You didn't have your wins expunged.  You were not put on probation.  So what if we choose to hurl a few remarks at you because of getting away with playing an ineligible player.  You got away with it.  You can laugh at us every time you look up at that Elite Eight banner.  And we reserve the right to tell you how you got it.

Why is it there's only been one person call this story what it was.....shat. It was made up to take a shot at Calipari. And to get all you knuckleheads that have nothing else to do in life something else to bash Calipari with at every opportunity.

Grow up! Realize when you're being played. Calipari himself stated that he wasn't taking a shot at Mike Krzyzewski and that they actually got along.

They're both grown men. If they take shots at one another I'm sure it would be man to man which is more than I can say for the majority of people that hang out on these boards hiding behind their little computer screens. And that includes the idiot that wrote this to begin with and started all this crap for the hits on his blog.

Here's the thing knucklehead. Eric Bledsoe was cleared three times 2 by the NCAA 1 by the University of Kentucky! Now you can shut your pie hole on that bit of misinformation you were trying to spew! I'm sure Calipari is bothered by the fact that the NCAA has set up offices in his office waiting and hoping something happens, while coach Krybaby walks around with impunity from any and all infractions from the NCAA, hell they don't even look in Dukes way about anything! Think I'm making it up? Does Corey Magette ring a bell? Any coach in that same situation would have received an infraction but somehow Krybaby isn't accountable for anything!

LOL Uk fans dont believe the facts, huh?Well the fact is also that Calapari has NEVER been charged with crap, yet everyone labels him a cheater. Those are facts to but im sure those facts are false, huh?Cal is labeled a bad guy for two situations that where for the most part out of his control. The NCAA cleared Rose at the begining of the season to play and then ruled him ineligable after the season was over.Cals fault?Marcus Cambys friends took money from a lawyer/agent two months before he entered the draft for plane tickets, food etc and then Marcus recieved money AFTER the season was over.Cals fault?Maybe he could of put a tighter leash on Marcus but Marcus was comin out as the top overall pick in the draft that year.So im sure he had people comin at him from all different kind of angles tryin to get a piece of the pie. Cal has commited just as many violations as Coach K.But oh no,no one wants to hear that.Duke may have not had any involvement but did Duke should of been given some kind of punishment for it.Not nothin serious but to just let it go like nothin ever happened is crazy.Im sure nothin will come of this as well

Does the SAT matter to UK fans?  The Eric Bledsoe recruitment obviously says no.

Did Bledsoe not pass the SAT?  First I have heard of it.  There was flap about his transcript, but that was laid to rest.  Also, as you would say, there was no UK involvement in that, so should it matter?  Bledsoe is coming back to work on a degree, so he really must be a bad student.  Not all things that Cal does are bad, but not all things that K do are honrable.

Magette did not sit out, so he was an ineligible player.  He played.  The roof would come down on so many other programs for this, but the NCAA cannot have its white knight tarnished.  UK did the right thing with the Wall situation.  dUKe did not with Magette.

Whoa.... this is a first

UK fans thinking they have done nothing wrong. Parade down richmond road to Coach Cals house burn a Christian Laettner jersey. Live in your past, since its has been proven Coach K's program works and Coach Cal's does not.

Hmmmmm

National Championships...
Coach K- 4
Coach Cal- 0

Final Four Appearances....
Coach K- 11 (none of which are vacated)
Coach Cal- 1 (two were vacated)
"my coach" Huggy Bear- 2

Ouch... that hurts

As mom always said.. the proof is in the pudding... so shut up and eat it.
