Calipari tosses veiled shot at Coach K on radio

Audio's at the bottom of the post, if you'd like to hop right to it. Frankly, I don't see how this isn't John Calipari lobbing a grenade the way of Mike Krzyzewski.

Calipari was on Memphia-area radio Thursday morning morning, a guest for "Sportstime with George Lapides," on Sports 56 WHBQ.

Before the knock at K came, Calipari was waxing -- which he's been prone to do as of late -- on the state of collegiate athletics, what's wrong, what can be fixed, etc. The man has many ideas, some of which do make a lot of sense. But his stream-of-consciousness suddenly took an abrupt turn when, while talking about the problems of college basketball spanning over two semesters, while football is just one, he then moved on to the NCAA needing an outside board with subpoena power.

And then the thinly veiled shot on Krzyzewski being Teflon to phone-call rules came whizzing by.

"Start a clean slate," Calipari said. "Police each other, give it to league commissioners and schools to deal with. If it goes beyond that, there's a board there that's ready to deal with it. ... You've got coaches being fired over phone calls and text messages. Some. Other guys can make phone calls and it's not that big a deal."

There's a kaboom.

If you've spent the past few weeks on vacation, Calipari is referring to our initial report, wherein a top prospect admitted he talked to Krzyzewski during the July recruiting period. Duke is now working with the NCAA to decipher if a violation occurred, and if so, a minor punishment would likely ensue.

Calipari, for the record, has never publicly been dinged for a phone-call or text-message violation -- though it was reported he did have a former assistant break such rules while at Memphis and in his first year at UK.

I am sorry but all big name players like the ones that you mentioned get associated with at least ten big name programs when they are being recruited. The only player that went to Kentucky that I know Coach K went hard after was John Wall. The thing with all of the names that you mentioned is they are all big named recruits and Kentucky and Duke would be on the list for all of them...I still think their philosophies are different when it comes to recruiting, just my opinion.

That was well put Dictator, I have no idea where the race card came into play in the context of this post and should not even be an issue. I am a Duke fan who obviously hates UNC, but I respect them and their knowledgeable fans. It is a lot easier to go back and forth with a UNC fan who know what they are talking about.

Actually "Devils3211"...over the last few years, Calipari and Coach K seem to have recruited a lot of the same players; Eliot Williams, John Wall, Eric Bledsoe (yes Duke did recruit him), Kyrie Irving, Austin Rivers, Perry Ellis, Alex Murphy, and Alex "don't call him until his AAU tournament is over" Poythress...maybe they're philosophies are not so different after all. What do you think, buddy?

Dawkins, G. Hill, T. Hill, Battier, J. Williams, Sheldon Williams, Boozer, Luol Deng, Duhon, G. Henderson, Dahntay Jones, C. MAggette, K. Irving, N. Smith, D. Ewing, R. Love, D. NElson, J. Capel, Brian Davis, A. Lang, T. Langdon, T. Amaker, and that is to name just a few.  Take your racist remaarks somewhere else.  BTW, I am a Tarheel fan.  So no bias here, I hate Duke because they are Duke, not because of some make believe racial problem.

Really you are going to bring the race card into this...Calipari is great recruiter and gets great players because he does not mind signing the one and done players, Coach K for the most part goes after a player that will stay more than one year. It is just a different style of coaching. Coach K looks for a player that has skills, but also one that he can develop as a person and player for more than one year, with the exception of Irving and Deng who left Duke after one season. Is Calipari a better recruiter, no...he just recruits a different kind of player.

Leave the race card out of it, it has nothing to do with the post. Also, really a mid major at best? Really? Coach K deserves a little bit more respect than what you are giving him. He is the best Coach in the Country...

Cal is a better recruiter than K anyday of the week. It is not White boy U in Kentucky, why is Duke so racist? If the officials ever quit getting paid off by Duke supporters, and have to play on a level field, they will be a mid Major at best. K is a great coach, but Duke cheats more than any program in the country. But no one will go near K, because he is White boy coach.

Sorry, I was referring to his infractions at Memphis and UMASS in regards to Rose and Camby. I retract my last statement in regards to recruiting violations.

I guess I am just defending Coach K if Calipari was actually going at him. In reading some more recent posts I wonder what Calipari was actually implying in the statements he made. Like somebody said in one of their posts I thought that Coach K and Calipari were on decent terms and was just wondering where he is coming from...

Calipari tosses veiled shot at Coach K on radio

All I have learned from these boards is that everyone is a homer!  Cal was taking a jab at the NCAA, not Coach K!  Cal was written a 5+ page "deeply troubling" letter by the NCAA, for receiving a game ball and applause for being recognized for his 500th win (he did not break any rules in this minor celebration, and actually said 'it was just another game'.  They even threatened a visit to the NCAA commitee on Infractions!  Yet, when Coach K breaks a minor rule, even though it was unintentional, the media flys to his defense.  I know it is a dumb rule, but how many dumb rules have been broken and enforced over the last decade?

The truth is Cal actually credits Coach K for helping him prepare his Dominican Republic national team.  So those that are going to go on their Anti-Cal, he has 2 Final-4's vacated rant, I will just laugh and shake my head.  Lets get some original stuff, and look at things openly!

Look at it in context. He's not saying that rules should be more enforced. He's saying that the NCAA should be more consistent. Calipari is only going to take shots at those that he has problems with (NCAA, Pitino, Pearl, etc.). As far as I know, Cal and K are on good terms.
