Calipari tosses veiled shot at Coach K on radio

Audio's at the bottom of the post, if you'd like to hop right to it. Frankly, I don't see how this isn't John Calipari lobbing a grenade the way of Mike Krzyzewski.

Calipari was on Memphia-area radio Thursday morning morning, a guest for "Sportstime with George Lapides," on Sports 56 WHBQ.

Before the knock at K came, Calipari was waxing -- which he's been prone to do as of late -- on the state of collegiate athletics, what's wrong, what can be fixed, etc. The man has many ideas, some of which do make a lot of sense. But his stream-of-consciousness suddenly took an abrupt turn when, while talking about the problems of college basketball spanning over two semesters, while football is just one, he then moved on to the NCAA needing an outside board with subpoena power.

And then the thinly veiled shot on Krzyzewski being Teflon to phone-call rules came whizzing by.

"Start a clean slate," Calipari said. "Police each other, give it to league commissioners and schools to deal with. If it goes beyond that, there's a board there that's ready to deal with it. ... You've got coaches being fired over phone calls and text messages. Some. Other guys can make phone calls and it's not that big a deal."

There's a kaboom.

If you've spent the past few weeks on vacation, Calipari is referring to our initial report, wherein a top prospect admitted he talked to Krzyzewski during the July recruiting period. Duke is now working with the NCAA to decipher if a violation occurred, and if so, a minor punishment would likely ensue.

Calipari, for the record, has never publicly been dinged for a phone-call or text-message violation -- though it was reported he did have a former assistant break such rules while at Memphis and in his first year at UK.

I love how everyone is reading into his statement that Cal is for the firing of coaches over text messages and phone calls. Anyone thinking that Cal is defending Coach K by saying the rule is stupid? Way to be open-minded CBS.

Calipari tosses veiled shot at Coach K on radio

First of all does anyone see the irony that Calipari would be the one to take a shot at Coach K. Calipari has left two programs, Memphis and UMASS, to deal with the messes he has left. Calipari has had to vacate wins at both schools because of his improper recruiting and with his recruiting issues we are not just talking about speaking to a player at a summer tournament. As Gary Parrish stated in an earlier column some of these player/coach contact rules during summer tournments are pretty stupid. The reason that this is a story is because it is Coach K. If it was Calipari it would be a non story because this is small compared to his recruiting violations.

It is interesting that Calipari is looking for a clean slate when it comes to this issue because Calipari is desperately in need of a clean slate because of his troubled past and lack of integrity in College Basketball. What coaches have been fired over this same type of contact that Coach K made? Please enlighten me. Calipari is not even on the same level as Coach K is when it comes to integrity of the game and being an overall great Coach and Role Model.

I will give Calipari credit, he does a great job at recruiting players that are one and done players. That is why so many of his players are great NBA players because technically they already are NBA players when they get to him. To me this is one of the major problems of College Baskeball. Something needs to be done about this because it really has watered down College Baskeball. Duke is not even immune to it anymore, Kyrie Irving left after his Freshman year. That has not happened at Duke in a while.

Calipari should have kept his mouth shut because Kentucky is in the same league as Duke, but Calipari is not even close to the same league as Coach K. It was a sad day in College Basketabll when Kentucky hired Calipari. Calipari should go back to the NBA where he belongs and stop trying to figure out what is wrong with College Sports and fix it, all he needs to do is look in the mirror.

I am not a Kentucky hater, I am a Duke Fan who loves College Basketball and really cannot believe Calipari would make a comment like that about Coach K.

Congrats Kentucky for making it the Final Four last year...I do respect your team and your History. Also, I cannot leave a post without saying that I do know that Calipari does give a lot back to his community and for that will give him props. He is not the devil, he just needs to keep his mouth shut and by doing so people might look at him in a better light...comments like this just add to his tarnished image.

1) You have horrible grammer.
2) Cal got two final fours from two different schools vacated, not three (The one he got last year at UK still stands).
3) The Memphis Final Four (2008) being vacated was probably somewhat related to Cal but Marcus Camby accepting improper benefits cannot be blamed on Coach Cal (UMass, 1996).
4) If he is such a horrible coach how does he constantly recruit the best players,  prepare them for the NBA (3 straight #1 recruiting classes, nine players drafted in the first round in the past few years) and go so far in the NCAA tournament (2 Final Fours, 1 Elite Eight since 2008)
5) I stongly dislike Duke (but I do respect the program).
6) I do really hate Christian Laettner though. Luckiest. Shot. Ever.

None vacated, but the ratfaced little f*&k certainly "quit" in 94-95 when he knew Duke would be mediocre and made sure those losses got put on Pete Gaudet rather than manning up and taking them himself.

Look, I'm the first to admit that the reason this has been as big a deal as it has been is that K has rarely been associated with anything like this, the Corey Magette situation excluded.  Furthermore, there is a far greater evil lurking just a mere 10 miles or so SW of Duke.  But this cannonization of K is just as silly as making Cal out to be the second coming of Barry Switzer.

By name calling what are you representing yourself to be other than an ignorant red neck who obviously is jealous of Calipari and what he's accomplished at Kentucky. Keep drinking that hater aid you're not going to change anything. Kentucky rules and Duke sucks!

Actually Calipari has a justified position here.  He has had 2 Final Fours revoked by the NCAA due to ineligible athletes, that thats offically 2 seasons that have "offically" been removed.  Coach K and his 1999 Final Four team were ineligible as well.  The blatant disregard for his transgressions and not Calipari's is uncomprehendable.  But the facts were clear that Corey Maggette received benefits from AAU booster/handler Myron Piggie. I don't like Calipari, but if I was him, this would get under my skin.

love how he wants to take shots at coach k when coach k hasnt been in any trouble with the ncaa. Caplipari should watch his mouth to much attention on him might get him in to trouble again. After all he is a coach that has had three final fours vacated at three different school. 1 mess up and cal wants to blow it up but when cal does something people already expect it. this guy shouldnt be coaching period if Bruce Pearl got fire over a bbq shouldnt coach cal been fired a long time ago and ban. THey shouldnt ban the school costing them scholarships for what a coach has done. it should be where ever the coach goes he should be punished. Cal is a scum that has just gotten lucky that he has been kicked out and i cant wait for the day it happens. Bobby Knight knows whats up.

I just think he was stating the obvious, some coaches are under more NCAA scrutiny than others.  This makes them targets, when in reality all coaches bends rules from time to time.  I've seen this first hand at a few major universities.
