Some clarifications on Gillispie, Texas Tech

By Matt Norlander

Yesterday, I wrote an opinion piece on Texas Tech and Billy Gillispie. In frank: I have my doubts about the future of the program under him due to the collateral damage his reputation could have in recruiting. The post was buttressed off a SPORTSbyBROOKS report that Billy Gillispie had been something of a nuisance in Lubbock since arriving there earlier this year. Many people who had spent many years at Tech prior to Gillispie's arrival are no longer working there.

I received a couple of, let's call them concerned, calls regarding my post and some innaccuracies contained within, which were catalyzed by the Brooks post. Multiple sources affiliated or formerly affiliated with Texas Tech called to clarify and rectify three things they state are patently false. This blog and myself are never above reproach, so here are the retractions:
  • Billy Gillispie and former assistant Chris Beard were never physically separated by Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt.
  • They were never separated because Beard and Gillispie were never involved in a physical altercation. Ever.
  • Gillispie was never outright verbally abusive toward Beard, so speculation of that behavior is incorrect. It never happened and never had an impact on Beard choosing to leave Tech's program earlier this summmer.
So there you have it. Beard is still gone and Tech moves on with a new staff and prepares for a new era under Gillispie.

Mr. Norlander, have you no shame? And you have the nerve to call yourself a journalist? A real man would pick up the phone and call Gillispie and apologize personally.

In the meantime, you should be suspended by CBS and sued by Gillispie for defamation because you were grossly negligent in your reporting (this meets the legal standard to be sued for libel).

The author of this piece is exactly what is wrong with journalism today.  No facts, no proof, no documentation.  Hey, let's just throw a bunch of crap up against the wall and see what sticks.

Maybe he might now realize that it's never a wise idea to use a crappy blogger who provided no sources in his article as his only source.

Lazy and irresponsible.

Matt, I wonder how you would feel if you found out some reporter posted something that was so wrong about you. Reporters like you should be fined for such slander. I agree with the previous blogger let Billy G hurt himself. THAT'S IF HE DOES!!!!!

Some clarifications on Gillispie, Texas Tech

While we’re at it let's clear up a few other things.... While at Kentucky, Gillispie never went out to the bars around Lexington and got plowed on a nightly basis. He never forced players off a team bus or had them spend half time in a bathroom stall.  He never was pulled over by Police for being under the influence.  In fact, let's just make him a saint....
It's easy to assume all of the retracted statements are true about Gillispie.  He's all yours Tech.  Be careful what you wish for....

The abuses to free speech witnesed here have become commonplace within the journalistic community. Especially in Sports journalism.

Other than that ...

how did you like the play Mrs. Lincoln?

Your retraction isn't really a small thing.  You have retracted the very meat of the article.  I guess you still have the bread and salad.

I have to agree with the other comment - it seems you jumped the gun on some rumors. Even if plausible given Billy G's history, it isn't ok to write bad things about someone until you have done your homework.  Even Billy G doesn't deserve to have his reputation unfairly sullied.  He will be able to do that on his own without your help.

Matt: You should resign. People like you are what's wrong sports reporters. You are too lazy to seek the real facts and you listen to unsubstantiated rumors. You don't deserve to be in the business. Shame on you. Admit the mistake was yours and nobody else's.
