Rick Pitino shoots back at John Calipari

It was only a matter of time.

Just a few days after Kentucky coach John Calipari's verbal jab directed squarely at Pitino and Louisville, the Cards' head coach fired back.

"Four things I've learned in my 59 years about people," Pitino told CBSSports.com on Wednesday. "I ignore the jealous, I ignore the malicious, I ignore the ignorant and I ignore the paranoid."

"If the shoe fits anyone," he added. "Wear it."

Wow.

To refresh your memory, here are Calipari's comments earlier in the week in which he purposely omits Louisville when talking about programs in the state of Kentucky.

"It's a unique thing," Calipari said. "There's no other state, none, that's as connected to their basketball program as this one. Because those other states have other programs. Michigan has Michigan State, California has UCLA, North Carolina has Duke. It's Kentucky throughout this whole state, and that's what makes us unique."

This is why the Kentucky-Louisville rivalry currently has no peer in college hoops.

At least while Pitino and Calipari run their respective programs.

It edges out the one with closer proximity down in Tobacco Road between Duke and North Carolina. Not due to the hatred between fan bases, because that exists at a similar level in Bluegrass country.

But because of the hatred of the two coaches who run the programs.

Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina's Roy Williams aren't exactly partners, but those guys are buddies compared to Calipari and Pitino.

Louisville Courier-Journal columnist Rick Bozich touched upon Calipari's jealousy in a column this morning and there's certainly some merit to his points.

It's no coincidence that Calipari accepted the job to coach the Dominican Republican national team shortly after Pitino agreed to (and later decided against) coach the Puerto Rican National club.

Calipari is envious of the fact that Pitino won a national championship.

Calipari is brash -- and even his closest friends in the business will tell you behind closed doors that he'll turn on anyone. I mean, think about the fact that Pitino was a key proponent in Calipari getting the UMass job years ago.

But that is ancient history now.

Pitino is nearing 60 and doesn't care what he says or who he offends these days.

A year ago, his team was over-matched talent-wise by Calipari's Wildcats. This year, although Kentucky remains loaded due to another stellar freshman class, the gap has closed significantly.

The two coaches will square off on New Year's Eve.

This makes for terrific theater, so grab some popcorn and enjoy the show.

Because it's not going to last forever.

Hey Popeye!

This is about Basketball! You wanna talk about Metropolitan cities? If a Basketball fan prides himself on the City life, then take pride in your UK/UL team while quickly moving outa Kentucky all together. Til then, face the facts, your Basketball is on a downward trajectory right now, simple as that.

This is stupid, I've been to Collegtown, PA, the Cuse area, UCONN's campus, Chapel Hill, Kansas . . . all smaller than the city of Louisville, I've never seen their fans come back with this sorta argument . . . Silly!

Uh Oh! I see that all those UL2Big12 profile names  have either changed or their just not posting all of the sudden . .

Talk about someone who talks outa' both sides of his mouth.

1. In the Media, Pitino says things like "The Big East can be better than ever", yet UL clearly made a last ditch effort to get the B12 invite.

2. Which takes me back to his post Karen Seipher ordeal when Pitino said "He'd like to stay at UL as long as they would have him", yet while lobbying behind the scenes for every NBA job that has ever come open in the last 10 years behind UL's back in a NBA league that whose teams have no interest.

Ironic, that no League wants UL, while no NBA team wants Pitino . .

Weird how the one of very teams Pitino is lobbying to join the BE, Memphis, has also apparently jumped over UL on the BE wish list if B12 decides to go to 12 teams, and Memphis and Marquette were the teams UL abandon abandoned in the C-USA saying they wanted to be in a more competivie league.

Funny how the coin flips!

1999, 2004, 2111.  That's three titles since you country bumpkins last won.
The article claimed no one team dominated a state like Kentucky.  What
a crock!  Connecticutt is just one such state.

UCONN??/.....give me a break....for 1 thing yankee doodle...this is a debate between Kentuckians...Louisville and Kentucky fans...there is no debate with UCONN and Calhoun...he's been proven to cheat...and our National Championships and Conference championships proves there is no UCONN domination than the bullsh*t ya'll pulled last year. Only reason ya'll don't have anyone but UCONN fans is because your state is about the size of Louisville...and nothing but lil yankee towns with colonial time tourist traps, crappy weather, and damn yankee doodles...so go beat your drum and blow your fife on a UCONN article...clam chowder for brains...

yeah and you can head on back to your trailer park to cook up some meth with your mom, when your done with that head to the next trailer over to bang your sister.  it kills me  that people from outside of louisville are so jealous of us city folk.

blackout-  A good name for you.  I think you have a blackout of news of your great city. I love the area in the west end of Louisville and especially Shawnee Park area.  And how about taking a walk around 35th and Garland some night.  Or just drive through the neighborhood without locking your doors.  Also Algonquin Parkway or 15th and Hill are pleasant areas to have a picnic sometime.

How about violet crime stats in Lou: 16.8 per 1,000 residents compared to 3.0 per 1,000 in the state.

How about property crime rate in Lou:  116 per 1,000 compared to 26.2 in the state.

Maybe you are the one taking meth with your mom and dad or haven't finsihed elementary school.

Just the facts Ma'am.

And I'm jealous of that.  And to add you have a pervert coach that goes in a Italian restaurant and spends 15 seconds to teach a female the high points of sex.

Id say that Uconn is far more dominant in CT than Kentucky is in Ky.  Based on the fact that Uconn is the only real college team and there are no pro teams in CT.  Uconn basketball dominates Connecticut sports and is really all that matters.  KY has Louisville to deal with.  Oh and Uconn is a superior program to KY (last 15 years)
