Rick Pitino shoots back at John Calipari

By Jeff Goodman

It was only a matter of time.

Just a few days after Kentucky coach John Calipari's verbal jab directed squarely at Pitino and Louisville, the Cards' head coach fired back.

"Four things I've learned in my 59 years about people," Pitino told CBSSports.com on Wednesday. "I ignore the jealous, I ignore the malicious, I ignore the ignorant and I ignore the paranoid."

"If the shoe fits anyone," he added. "Wear it."

Wow.

To refresh your memory, here are Calipari's comments earlier in the week in which he purposely omits Louisville when talking about programs in the state of Kentucky.

"It's a unique thing," Calipari said. "There's no other state, none, that's as connected to their basketball program as this one. Because those other states have other programs. Michigan has Michigan State, California has UCLA, North Carolina has Duke. It's Kentucky throughout this whole state, and that's what makes us unique."

This is why the Kentucky-Louisville rivalry currently has no peer in college hoops.

At least while Pitino and Calipari run their respective programs.

It edges out the one with closer proximity down in Tobacco Road between Duke and North Carolina. Not due to the hatred between fan bases, because that exists at a similar level in Bluegrass country.

But because of the hatred of the two coaches who run the programs.

Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina's Roy Williams aren't exactly partners, but those guys are buddies compared to Calipari and Pitino.

Louisville Courier-Journal columnist Rick Bozich touched upon Calipari's jealousy in a column this morning and there's certainly some merit to his points.

It's no coincidence that Calipari accepted the job to coach the Dominican Republican national team shortly after Pitino agreed to (and later decided against) coach the Puerto Rican National club.

Calipari is envious of the fact that Pitino won a national championship.

Calipari is brash -- and even his closest friends in the business will tell you behind closed doors that he'll turn on anyone. I mean, think about the fact that Pitino was a key proponent in Calipari getting the UMass job years ago.

But that is ancient history now.

Pitino is nearing 60 and doesn't care what he says or who he offends these days.

A year ago, his team was over-matched talent-wise by Calipari's Wildcats. This year, although Kentucky remains loaded due to another stellar freshman class, the gap has closed significantly.

The two coaches will square off on New Year's Eve.

This makes for terrific theater, so grab some popcorn and enjoy the show.

Because it's not going to last forever.

Don't cry though, you can still root for your Cats.

And, who said I was crying? All I have done is post FACTS that completely disprove your "conspiracy theory".

Well, of COURSE I am going to root for the Cats. Who do you think I would root for? The Huskers? Do they even play basketball in Nebraska?

P.S. I don't hate UK, I am not a fan of either team. I just dislike people who can't see the truth through their own predjudices and than validate what they say by stating technicalities. The court of public opinion is not perfect but is usually accurate with or without "proof" and everyone knows Calipari is a lowlife, cheater. I'll say goodbye now because i can't waste any more time with you. Ignorance and blind faith is hard to debate with.

Ah, yes, you're using the "the coach is responsible" defense. Should have somewhat expected that. Is this what you claim when your Huskers have been busted in the past? If the coach was responsiblwe (Sampson, Calhoun, Pearl), then Coach Cal would have been slapped around and penalized with a Show Cause by the NCAA, some other form of punishment. But, he wasn't and was cleared of any wrong doing by the NCAA.

Again, that's proof, where you're simply touting your opinion. I choose FACTS over OPINION any day.

The entire story is that the coach is responsible, whether he knew about something or not. Calipari brought it to their attention to cover his own hide. You can explain it all you want but the head of the orginization, of the team is respnsible. Don't you find it even a little strange that both his teams before UK had problems with the NCAA? Are you that blind or naive? Don't cry though, you can still root for your Cats.

You are a blind fan of your team and can not see the truth. Are you one of those people who believe the Holacaust never happened? Go to the bathroom, splash some cold water in your face and wake up.Or maybe you should return to elementary school with me?

And what truth would that be? That you hate Kentucky? Trust me, I can see that plain as day. Just like I hate Louisville. But, you claim that I am not seeing "the truth". Can you enlighten me? To me, it seems that the truth for you is veiled by your hatred. Take the veil off and go educate yourself by reading what truly happened with each instance. Or, re-read what I have already posted....FACTS. Now THAT'S the truth.

As for the holocost comment....rather offensive indeed to those who lived through it. But, it just shows what a moron you are.

He has had two, not one, but two, final fours vacated.

But not for anything HE has done.

Known Cheaters......

Slick Rick Pitino (on his wife, and in the NCAA)
Jim Calhoun
Kelvin Sampson
Jim O'Brien
Bruce Pearl
Eddie Sutton

Theorized that he cheated: John Wooden, but never proven.

But NOT John Calipari.

UMass, sanctions, Memphis, sanctions.

UMass was forced to vacate their Final Four because Marcus Camby accepted gifts from an agent. He has openly admitted to doing this (earlier this year) and apologized for it. Coach Cal was NOT even investigated for this. Now, here's where the story completely punches a hole in your little fairytale....It was Coach Cal who reported this to the NCAA. So....if you claim he was CHEATING, then why did he report Marcus Camby to the NCAA?

Memphis, as well, was forced to vacate their Final Four. Why? The NCAA Clearing House declared that Rose's SAT score was invalid, thus making Rose an inelligble player. Now, for his SAT score....NOBODY knows what happened, and to speculate is simply irresponsible. What's fact is the NCAA cleared him, then declared him ineligible. And, here's the best part.....and it again punches a hole right through your "Cal's a cheater" theory....the NCAA NEVER investigated Coach Cal, and even provided him a letter exhonorating him for any of this.

It is SOOOO easy to throw out "Cal's a cheater".......but grow some nuts and tell the entire story.

Cal technically has not been proven to be a cheater, but you have to admit he is pretty darn shadey.

He has had two, not one, but two, final fours vacated.

I really find it strange that Cal is even allowed to coach in the NCAA.  The guy cheats every year, and has even got caught coach in the NCAA.

Coach Cal's been caught cheating by the NCAA????? REALLY????? This is the first that I have ever heard this.

Do yourself a favor and go to NCAA.org and look this up in the infractions tracker.....yes, there actually is one......

Then, you will see the following.

Coach Cal violations: None. Because there are none.

However, Slick Rick Pitino HAS been busted for CHEATING. That's fact.
