Rick Pitino shoots back at John Calipari

By Jeff Goodman

It was only a matter of time.

Just a few days after Kentucky coach John Calipari's verbal jab directed squarely at Pitino and Louisville, the Cards' head coach fired back.

"Four things I've learned in my 59 years about people," Pitino told CBSSports.com on Wednesday. "I ignore the jealous, I ignore the malicious, I ignore the ignorant and I ignore the paranoid."

"If the shoe fits anyone," he added. "Wear it."

Wow.

To refresh your memory, here are Calipari's comments earlier in the week in which he purposely omits Louisville when talking about programs in the state of Kentucky.

"It's a unique thing," Calipari said. "There's no other state, none, that's as connected to their basketball program as this one. Because those other states have other programs. Michigan has Michigan State, California has UCLA, North Carolina has Duke. It's Kentucky throughout this whole state, and that's what makes us unique."

This is why the Kentucky-Louisville rivalry currently has no peer in college hoops.

At least while Pitino and Calipari run their respective programs.

It edges out the one with closer proximity down in Tobacco Road between Duke and North Carolina. Not due to the hatred between fan bases, because that exists at a similar level in Bluegrass country.

But because of the hatred of the two coaches who run the programs.

Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina's Roy Williams aren't exactly partners, but those guys are buddies compared to Calipari and Pitino.

Louisville Courier-Journal columnist Rick Bozich touched upon Calipari's jealousy in a column this morning and there's certainly some merit to his points.

It's no coincidence that Calipari accepted the job to coach the Dominican Republican national team shortly after Pitino agreed to (and later decided against) coach the Puerto Rican National club.

Calipari is envious of the fact that Pitino won a national championship.

Calipari is brash -- and even his closest friends in the business will tell you behind closed doors that he'll turn on anyone. I mean, think about the fact that Pitino was a key proponent in Calipari getting the UMass job years ago.

But that is ancient history now.

Pitino is nearing 60 and doesn't care what he says or who he offends these days.

A year ago, his team was over-matched talent-wise by Calipari's Wildcats. This year, although Kentucky remains loaded due to another stellar freshman class, the gap has closed significantly.

The two coaches will square off on New Year's Eve.

This makes for terrific theater, so grab some popcorn and enjoy the show.

Because it's not going to last forever.

I disagree with that ! U of L has always had a decent basketball program ! From Denny Crum's arrival in the early 1970s throughout the 1970s and 1980s, U of L more than held their own ! Crum went to 2 Final Fours in the 1970s losing each time to his mentor legendary UCLA coach John Wooden ! Crum's 1975 U of L team arguably was one of the best teams ever that didn't win a championship and they lost to eventual NCAA Champion UCLA who beat ahem UK in the Championship game !

Crum guided U of L to 2 NCAA titles and 6 Final Four appearances and that's a lot more than Joe B hall or Eddie Sutton managed to do while coaching UK ! UK won the NCAA title in 1978 and from that point on until Pitino arrived in the 1990s, UK hadn't done much !  Before the 1978 title, UK hadn't won a title since Rupp's 1958 team won !

Pitino put UK back on the map and they won 2 titles in the late 1990s and haven't done much since even though they've had better teams and talent than U of L has had in that span !

Now case closed !

You also find Cat fans all across the US
Fortunately inbreeding keeps most of you in Kentucky. Ha, ha, I make me laugh. That was no Karen Sypher joke, but still funny if you ask me.

Wait, Louisville plays in an arena called the Dum Dum Center? Aren't those the stupid little lollipops that have a mystery flavor that always ends up being pineapple? Screw pineapple.

I guess the truth hurts, huh?   If anyone is being realistic, you have to admit that Calipari is just stating the truth.  There really is only one team in the state of Kentucky and it's been that way my entire life.  Sure, there is a small segment of people in the state that follow U of L, but the vast majority of the fans in the state are Cat fans.  You also find Cat fans all across the US and U of L just doens't compare.  They have always been jealous of UK and that continues.  It does amaze me that this has become news and that CBS sports decided to try to put their spin on it, but I guess I shouldn't be suprised.   You article should be titled.... Calipari tells the truth, Pitino whines as usual.

Good times. Now if I may share a few thoughts without being personally attacked...

1. Jokes about Karen Sypher do not personally offend me, and quite frankly, are a little stale. I will allow Morehead St. cracks until the start of next season, so hurry up and get them in. Pitino coaches my favorite team, but I have no relation to him. I have developed this crazy wierd ability to separate the two.

2. I didn't get the impression that NYCER was a Louisville fan, just somebody that lives in or is from New York, so he's trolling, which brings me to...

3. UNC fans. The quality of the teams in these rivalries is arguable. The passion is not. Go back to your snobby, private, east coast world and enjoy the overblown hype the mothership gives you. Don't get mad, your football team will surely hand me a beatdown on Saturday.

4. 15th and Hill is not exactly downtown. That's the hood, son, where we recruit most of our players and students. 4-to-1 UK fans is slightly inaccurate, especially in "the hood." I would estimate Jefferson County at about 60-40 UL, but don't get worked up, that's pretty good for enemy territory, and you certainly have more fans in the state and in the world. That being said, we don't have any problem selling out any of our games, so try and get your facts straight, so you don't make yourself look stupid. Formulated sentences would also help.

5. Paul4Cats EASILY has the best post on this thread.

6. Followed by DontArgueWithIt, which I can't believe hasn't been removed yet. Like Rome always says, you have to appreciate a good use of the word "butthole" in a sentence.

7. Fellow UL fans, please stop saying Cal is cheating at UK. It will only make us look stupid when he doesn't get caught again. Plus, it's about as lame as Karen Sypher jokes and using the term "Loserville".

8. IU fan!!! Awesome, I was not expecting that!!! Where have you been lately, anyway?

9. uksmithman - Pitino said UK was like the Green Bay Packers and now he is angry because Cal is kinda doing the same thing, which makes Pitino a hypocrite. We got it, we got it, and we got it.

10. bsharp61 - For the sake of your fellow UK fans, minorities, and humanity in general, don't ever, ever express your opinions in a public forum again.

11. Hypocrite. H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E. Hypocrite.

12. UK fans haven't even brought up our conference being destroyed. You guys are slippin'. Let Karen Sypher go and get with the program.

13. Can we stick to the sports teams? Please don't attack the fine people of my fair city. Without the tax dollars of the businesses and their employees of this economic engine, the Commonwealth wouldn't have any money to pay for maintenance on I-64 or I-65, or for any meth recovery programs or free dentistry clinics. Just kidding, kinda!!!

Savor the "beatdown" we handed your awesome football team from our even more awesome football team and we'll see ya on New Year's Eve.

Rick Pitino shoots back at John Calipari

I know who Rick Pitino is, but who exactly is this John Capiilaries guy?  That's a bloody awful name...  But you know, out here in the West we don't really know much about basketball.  Oh well.  That Kentucky is a cute state though, whoever plays there.

So RP ignores himself?  He ignores the jealous, the malicious, the ignorant and the paranoid?  Yep he's talking about himself.  I wonder if he ignores slimeballs too?  Well he's already ignoring himself so it doesn't really matter.

What a typical Loserville fan response.  BTW Pitino would still be loved in Lexington if he hadn't taken the Loserville job.  UL wouldn't care a whit about basketball if they weren't so jealous of UK.  Yeah everybody laughs at UK.  Sure they do.  And nobody's laughing at Loserville fans - well except me of course and most of the rest of the BBN.  UK has led the nation in attendance every year except one or two since they built Rupp.  They came in second to Syracuse because they played in a domed stadium and actually had a good team for a few years.  But I think it was only one year they came in first in attendance.  UL has never came close and the Dum Dum center will only prove you can't fill an arena much less a stadium.  Half the people I know in Louisville are UK fans btw.  Louisville knows it.  That's what really burns Pitino.  He says his biggest mistake was leaving UK.  What's that tell you lardfan?  And what's with the 6969?  Keep your sex life out of this.  We don't want to know.
