The Big East is standing still, getting killed

The next move in the ongoing game of conference realignment has been made.

And the Big 12 made it.

Which is why the Big 12 seems poised to survive in this eat-or-be-eaten world of college athletics while the Big East continues to get picked apart by anybody and everybody. Pittsburgh and Syracuse announced last month that they're leaving for the ACC; that took the Big East down to seven football-playing schools. Now TCU, according to my colleague Brett McMurphy, is headed to the Big 12 and leaving the Big East with just six football-playing schools ... at least one of which (Connecticut) has made it clear it would like to find a new home, too. Meantime, the Big East has done nothing of note. The league is just sitting there taking punches to the face, one after another, and, consequently, sooner or later, it'll be down for the count and in no position to adequately recover.

The possible additions of Army and Navy won't fix the Big East's problems.

At this point, I can't imagine anything really will.

What the Big East should've done is tried to take advantage of the Big 12's turmoil last month and offered invitations to any Midwest school willing to leave the Texas-Oklahoma fight behind. It might not have worked, obviously. But if we've learned anything over the past few years it's that one way to strengthen yourself is to damage the competition, and that's something the ACC highlighted when it targeted Pittsburgh and Syracuse. The Big 12, under new leadership, also understands this approach. But the Big East never has and apparently never will. So it can add Army and Navy if it wants, and perhaps East Carolina, Temple, UCF and SMU, too. But the decision to be reactive rather than proactive has put the Big East in a nearly impossible situation, and, truth be told, the storied league has only itself to blame.

Very good comment regarding Baylor.  The big baby Baylor Bears wanted to sue Texas A&M but I bet they were first in line to vote to invite TCU.  What a two faced nothing team Baylor is.  Wow, they have a good player and beat TCU who then in turn lost to SMU on their home field--wow, now they think they are a top notch BCS team or something.  Always been a joke and always will be a joke.

you genius, the NCAA has nothing to do with conference realignment. Learn a few facts before sounding like a complete tool.

The Big East is standing still, getting killed

I have said this before and i will say it again. The Big East football only schools all need to leave for other conferences or become independents and the basketball only schools should merge with the A-10 to form a basketball superconference.

That being said, I dont think any of the big conferences expand further to 16 teams until Notre Dame gets off its @ss and finally commits fully to a conference.

The Big East is standing still, getting killed

"Syracuse, Pitt, UConn and WVU are the only real BCS conference like schools anyways from the Big East. Two of them are gone, and the other two should make moves too before it's too late.

The Big East management is dumb. I've been saying this since 2006."

WTF makes syracuse a BCS type team, have they ever even played in a BCS game? What a joke

The Big East is standing still, getting killed

This is rather two faced of the Big 12 to steal from other BCS conferences when less than a month ago they wanted to sue the SEC for poaching A&M. I bet Baylor voted to extend the invitation to TCU. Can't have it both ways!

The Big East is standing still, getting killed

It's time for the BCS to go ahead and announce that the Big East has lost it's automatic qualifier, or put a condition requiring them to have a top six or eight team.  The Big East was fortunate that they didn't lose it when Miami/BC/Va Tech left.  Now with Syracuse and Pittsburgh gone, the Mountain West is more or at least as competitive top to bottom.

When will they fight back

Absolutely agree.  The Big East should have moved to 12 football programs years ago and instead placated Villanova's desire to play in a soccer stadium.  Then they go to Texas instead of staying in their neighborhood and as everyone who had a brain thought, TCU would leave as soon as it got a B12 invite.  The Big East needs to develop a plan and implement it.  At this point, its bring in service academies that have no chance at ever making the Top 10.

The Big East is standing still, getting killed

I love all the morons on here that have their outlandish predictions on how VT & FSU leave the SEC then the ACC pick up UConn, Rutgers, etc.....ETC......ETC......And any OTHER joke of a prediction. Predictions are like assholes everyone has one and they all stink to shit!

What a bunch of friggin rubbish. You people need lives. The majority of the moves are done. The BE will lose AQ and WVU will eventually leave the BE as well. I mean that's about it. You really think some school is going to pay in upwards of $20M to leave the ACC? You really think the B1G and SEC will add piss poor quality schools???

C'mon now. Again, you people are a joke. Stay away from the craps tables I am sure you're a big loser there too.
