Kentucky Villains charity game: a brilliant idea

Because Kentucky is Kentucky, it can do extraordinary things with its basketball program. And I must say, this Kentucky Villains vs. Big Blue All-Stars charity game that's been organized is one of the better ideas UK athletics has conjured up in recent years. (And it wouldn't be possible without the stubborn, unwitting help of the NBA lockout.)

On Oct. 24, Rupp Arena is hosting -- and will likely sell out -- another exhibition game. The official announcement came Thursday evening, when former Wildcat Jeff Sheppard -- who organized the event -- announced it at a press conference. The beauty of it, the perfect touch: Christian Laettner will coach the Villains. And there is no better choice. None. Laettner's even made a promo video, wherein he clearly has to check the teleprompter when stating his name. Totally a Burgundy move.

Rex Chapman, who played at Kentucky from 1986-88, will coach Kentucky's side. Enes Kanter is definitely playing, and that's the greatest aspect of this for so many Kentucky fans. Finally, Kanter gets a game in Rupp. Rajon Rondo, Tayshaun Prince and John Wall are believed to be playing, and as for the Villains side, Joakim Noah is not locked in, but Kentucky fans definitely want him involved.

Sheppard said the rosters are trying to get finalized as soon as possible, but he tossed out these names as strong possibilities:

Villains:
  • Nolan Smith
  • Terrence Williams
  • Kenneth Faried
  • Rudy Gay
  • Eric Gordon
  • Zach Randolph
  • Tyler Hansbrough
  • Shelvin Mack
Big Blue All-Stars:
  • John Wall
  • Tayshaun Prince
  • Enes Kanter
  • Rajon Rondo
  • Nazr Mohammed
  • Keith Bogans
  • Jodie Meeks
  • Chuck Hayes
  • DeMarcus Cousins
Mohammed recently organized a workout with UK's team and the Oklahoma City Thunder, which he plays for. Rondo and the Celtics were also in Lexington this past week. The possibility for a true all-star affair seems likely.

The star of this night is going to be Laettner, though. He's got such a hold on UK fans' hearts, in the worst way, that this is all so brilliant. The beautiful irony that stems out of this: Because of his participation, Laettner will be more beloved in the state than he ever thought he'd could be.

You want more information? A website's been built in honor of this exhibition. BigBLueAllStars.com. You'll find a schedule and merchandise -- yes, merchandise -- for the game, including "I STILL HATE LAETTNER" T-shirts.

im tired of all of these kentucky fans thinking they know everything when they dont. first of all rick pitino pulled out of coaching the dr team because of schedule conflict, and then you want to make stupid comments like ones you just said? i was just looking to see who won the game but seen the stupidity comments you came up with. louisville is not the one that has the coach who said "IF WE WIN A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AND DONT GET ANY OF OUR PLAYERS DRAFTED, THEN I WILL BE VERY DISAPOINTED!" how many times has that happened in history??????i think NEVER! I cant stand all of you "KENCUKY" fans and the KSR people including MATT JONES, because you have no clue what your talking about. stop bleading blue and take your bluse glasses off please!!!! GO CARDS!

Its funny how UK fans make up things and then will them to be true.  Pitino did not pull out of the Puerto Rican team, it was a mutualy based decision on scheduling conflicts and other business issues.  Being a UK fan you may not understand the complex world of business or having a job.  The DR team did not reach out to Cal he sought them out days after the Pitino announcement occurred.  The only accurate answer was that Jeff Shepard did put the charity event together and as a sensible person I think it is nice jesture by all involved to have a little fun and raise some money for charity.

As far as having NBA guys on campus, UNC has been doing that for years.  In fact, UK and then coach Eddie Sutton complained to the NCAA that it was unfair recruiting and in fact the NCAA put rules around who you can have on campus etc.

Maybe during the call to complain about the unfair recruiting practices they should have mentioned the money they were paying players.  Or how they were having other students take the the ACT test for incoming student athletes.

Also, Duke does not have the most in the NBA so do some research before you make assumptions.

Actually according to the CBS page Duke has 16 players on NBA roster and UK has 15.  I don't think Laettner was forced out as much as he go to old and had to retire.  It happens.  Everyone has an experation date.  Wait until pay-pal-cal is found cheating (250,000 to Davis' dad anyone) and has to vacate wins.  Then you will be singing a different tune.   I hate Dooke.  I hate Laettner.  But this is one game that I can't wait to see Big Blue get punished.  Psycho-T will go 5-0 against Big Blue.

Legends of the Phog had to be what they are working off of.  Nothing cooler than an all (throw in your own school) alumni game!
