The SEC Media has done it again

By Gary Parrish

Remember when the SEC Media didn't vote John Wall on the preseason SEC First Team?

I do.

I wrote this about it.

Now they've done the same thing to Anthony Davis, and I think I'll just cut what I wrote about Wall, paste it here and change the names where necessary. It'll make the same point and save some time. Here goes:

The SEC media poll and preseason awards have been released.

Kentucky is picked to win the league.

That's smart.

John Wall Anthony Davis was voted Second Team All-SEC.

That's dumb ... and you'll see why in time, I'm certain. Speaking of, I have a friend who watched Kentucky practice recently. When it was over he sent the following text: "Just done watching UK practice. Wow. John Anthony is incredible."

Anyway ...

Now I know what you're thinking: Who cares, Parrish?

Answer: I care. And you do, too. That's why you're reading this. And though I realize there are no hard and fast rules to voting for preseason teams, they should, in my opinion, try to serve as predictions for how the postseason team might look. Using that as the gauge, not having Davis on the SEC First Team is undeniably stupid. He's the most talented player on the most talented team in the league. Like I once wrote about Wall, you'll see in time, I'm certain. And please don't mention how "Davis hasn't even played a college game yet," because that's the dumbest thing college basketball fans annually spend October saying about incoming freshmen. Remember, Jared Sullinger had never played a college game, either ... until he did. Then he got 19 points and 14 rebounds in Ohio State's season-opening win, and that shouldn't have surprised anybody.

Why?

Because some guys are just obviously gifted.

Jared Sullinger is one of those guys.

Anthony Davis is, too.

Parrish carrys Cal's water? Do you not pay attention?  This is the reporter who was told his media pass was revoked because of some bullcrap he brought up about Davis.  (At least I'm guessin he can still come to games, I dont know what ever happened with that) But Parrish knows what basketball talent looks like and it is Anthony Davis.  Josh Selby doesnt even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Davis.  Maybe the kid was misunderstood, but he took money and lied about it and apparently wasnt the greatest teammate or had a poor work ethic one cuz Self made him rid the bench.  This was a kid who cared absolutely nothing about being in college, that is exactly why Cal didnt accept his commitment and told him to hold off for awhile, then ultimately stopped recruiting him.  Anthony Davis will prove rather quickly that he is a star just like UK's other freshmen studs over the last couple of years.  Who cares about preseason polls, it's the ones at the end of the year that matters.

@Lee3022...you will see. It's exactly as Gary was talking about...the foolish ones that don't ACKNOWLEDGE true talent even before they play their first game. You don't have to be a fan of UK, but if you truly follow college basketball then you know Anthony Davis will be the best player in the Nation.

Josh Shelby??? Seriously?

John Wall isn't a narsistic premadona, because those words aren't real.

And Parrish is spot on. Anthony Davis will not need much time to adjust. He is too skilled, long and athletic not to dominate. He's also playing for the best coach in the country at developing talent quickly.

The comment about Wall which doesn't warrant repeating is another case of uneducated people accepting a narrative as fact when in reality the opposite is true. Wall was a great teammate, leader and kid and anyone who has spent time with him could tell you that.

Parrish Carry water for Cal and his players? UK fans would certainly disagree. He does tout UK's players I guess, but probably because they are consistently some of the best in the nation. Bottom line, is Anthony Davis more likely to be on the post-season ALL-SEC team than one of the players currently on it? If you're being honest, that answer is an emphatic yes.

You seem certain you are correct, Gary. And maybe you are. But trying to preempt the obvious argument to your claim by citing one player out of many dozens who have been rated preseason second team as freshmen is inadequate and poor logic. This is a preseason poll. There are many who believe you should wait to honor a player until he plays the game. Last year the Big XII did not make the #1 recruit in the country (Josh Selby) a preseason first teamer. Turns out he was not on any of the post season honors teams. Was he the most talented player in college last year? At least one of them. But through several factors including suspension and injury he never really showed up except fot a few games in the middle of the season.

See, this is your logic Gary - an isolated example to match an isolated example. Davis might be really good this year. Or he might need the year to find his way like North Carolina's Harrison Barnes. Big men take longer to develop than perimeter players. But Gary, we all know you carry water for John Calipari and his players. when it is this obvious you only hurt your own credibility. That is a preseason rant against the guys who cover the league. That is what's stupid.

I dont agree with him being several cheeseburgers away from being dominant.  People seem to forget, Davis is not a true center, he is a pf who will spread the floor making big SEC centers who are used to playin the block come out to guard and him and the following things will happen: he will go by them before they even realize he is gone and he will cause centers like Festus Ezili to get in foul trouble.  He is 6'10 with point guard skills.  They can play him at the 2 if they want.  His versatility is what makes him great.  And he doesnt have to be all up on a player to defend, he has a 7'4 wingspan.  He will block shots with ease and will also dunk on people 4 foot or more away from the basket, his arms are just that freakishly long.  He has already gained weight since he's been at UK, something that anyone who knows Davis knew was gonna take time cuz of his late growth spurt.  He will only get stronger and more dangerous.  I agree, not naming him 1st team was dumb, but then again the SEC is usually dumb cuz Chandler Parsons winning POY last year was a joke, just like Cal being snubbed for COY two years ago was a joke.  UK players will win POY and FPOY and if UK plays the way we know they can, Cal should be COY.  But, he'll be snubbed again.  As we all know though, these preseason things dont mean crap.
