Pastner: Memphis will never play Arkansas

Due to its location, Memphis is in prime position to have plenty of local rivalries. It’s in Tennessee, is close to Mississippi and Arkansas, and has access to most of the SEC.

However, head coach Josh Pastner wants no part of having a series with any of the aforementioned teams.

“As long as I’m the head coach at Memphis, I will not play Arkansas,” Pastner said this morning on Hog Sports Radio. “I don’t want to play Tennessee, but we do it. I don’t want to play Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Florida.”

People who have dealt with Pastner in the past know that he does not mean anything personal by saying that. The common thread that all of those teams have is that they recruit in Memphis – and Pastner does not want recruiting rivals getting free access to the city.

“I don’t want to have to play a team who wants to come in and try to recruit Memphis,” he said. “As a coach, my whole thing is, you don’t want to give anyone an advantage.”

Memphis plays Tennessee on an annual basis, but the Tigers have not faced Arkansas since 2003. They have not played Mississippi in the regular season since 2007, or Mississippi State since 1985. Memphis has only faced Florida once, in 1977 on a neutral court.

Pastner has a solution if these schools want home-and-home series with Memphis – vote the Tigers into the SEC.

“That will solve everything,” he said. “You don’t have to ask me; we would play twice. If you’re coming in here, if you want to play Memphis, go to your presidents and vote Memphis in the SEC. That’s the easiest way to do it.

“If you’re asking me for a non-conference game, it’s not going to happen.”

While Pastner did not mean the comments to be taken personally, Memphis might have some new unspoken rivalries on its hands.

Pastner: Memphis will never play Arkansas

Not much chance that Memphis gets notice from any football conference, muchless the Big Daddy of college football.  Nice basketball program however..  Still, only a ripple on the ocean of athletic legitimacy

@halo27legend

Its spelled K-E-V-I-N.  Thanks

I already addressed Will Barton.  Everyone who knows anything about Will Barton's situation knows that UM got him bc he was a package deal with his brother.  The other big schools recruiting Will didn't want Antonio and Memphis took him on.

How did Jelan Kendrick work?  Did he ever play for Memphis?  Exactly.

Going forward Pastner may be able to get lots of players nationally.  All I'm saying is to this point 95% of the top kids he has landed all came from Memphis and all of them wanted to come to UM regardless of the coach.

Pastner is known as a great recruiter.  However, if you look the only players he is able to recruit come from Memphis

Pastner not only landed Will Barton out of Baltimore, he also landed Jelan Kendrick out of Atlanta.

He has landed top 50 recruit Damien WIlson out of Georgia for 2012 as well and is still very much in the running for 2 or 3 top rated out of state players for 2012.

Its only his 3rd season.

He did land a lot of players from Memphis, but who wouldn't want to?

They were all top rated players. Most of them were top 50 or higher rated prospects.

Besides, the longer Pastner is at Memphis and the more Memphis wins, the more  he will be able to branch outside of the city and land top rated guys from out of town.

He won't be limited to just local prospects. However, expect him to continue landing top prospects out of Memphis as there will be atleast 1 all american come out of the city each of the next 3 or 4 years.

Amen... Brilliant statement by Pastner. All these schools out of the SEC who would never EVER vote Memphis into the SEC (for fear of losing recruiting ground in memphis for football) can kiss our azz if they think they are gonna get some free publicity for their program by playing a home and home series against Memphis. Brilliant statement by Pastner. You want to play us?? Vote us in then. This is where the real cowardice sleeps. These schools know Memphis would blossom if they were in the SEC and their days of plucking talent out of the city would be over.

Pastner: Memphis will never play Arkansas

Very few people, I suspect, think like Pastner does -- that playing Arkansas would hurt our recruiting. Some Memphis/Arkansas fans would like to see a series, others couldn't care less. Count me in the latter group.

The only question I have is -- why all the fuss from Arkansas fans? If you think your team is that much better than Memphis, why would you care? If MTSU refused to play us, do you think one Memphis fan would get pissy on a message board about it? Not a chance. Might spill beer all over themselves laughing, but ticked off? No way. That only happens when you feel dissed -- never when the unwelcomed team is the better one.

Perhaps you should get your facts straight.  It was Arkansas that did not want to play Memphis because they could not beat us.  Don't make remarks on subjects you know nothing about.

----------------------------

It looks like your the one who doesn't have their facts straight. Arkansas wanted to and tried to keep Memphis on it's schedule, but Calipari is the one who didn't want to continue the games. And Arkansas beat Memphis a lot more times than they lost. It looks Pastner is even a bigger coward than Calipari.

Sounds to me like he is begging to get into the SEC.

Those words will pretty much ensure that if the NCAA can ever match up any of those teams in the NCAA tournament, look for it to happen.

Mike, a couple of things about your comparison.  Syracuse is in the same conference as the teams you mention.  Pastner plainly states he would be more than happy to play Arkansas, Ole Miss, and TN if the Tigers were invited to the SEC.  If Syracuse is playing any of the teams you mention 5 years from now, once they're firmly settled in the ACC, I'll bow down at the altar of Boeheim. :)
Yeah, that's a good point. But I was saying once we move to the ACC, I guess we'll have to stop playing them.

What a joke.

I guess Syracuse will have to stop playing St. Johns, Seton Hall and Connecticut every year, as well as Villanova because they're in neighboring states and will hurt our recruiting.
