Pastner: Memphis will never play Arkansas

Due to its location, Memphis is in prime position to have plenty of local rivalries. It’s in Tennessee, is close to Mississippi and Arkansas, and has access to most of the SEC.

However, head coach Josh Pastner wants no part of having a series with any of the aforementioned teams.

“As long as I’m the head coach at Memphis, I will not play Arkansas,” Pastner said this morning on Hog Sports Radio. “I don’t want to play Tennessee, but we do it. I don’t want to play Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Florida.”

People who have dealt with Pastner in the past know that he does not mean anything personal by saying that. The common thread that all of those teams have is that they recruit in Memphis – and Pastner does not want recruiting rivals getting free access to the city.

“I don’t want to have to play a team who wants to come in and try to recruit Memphis,” he said. “As a coach, my whole thing is, you don’t want to give anyone an advantage.”

Memphis plays Tennessee on an annual basis, but the Tigers have not faced Arkansas since 2003. They have not played Mississippi in the regular season since 2007, or Mississippi State since 1985. Memphis has only faced Florida once, in 1977 on a neutral court.

Pastner has a solution if these schools want home-and-home series with Memphis – vote the Tigers into the SEC.

“That will solve everything,” he said. “You don’t have to ask me; we would play twice. If you’re coming in here, if you want to play Memphis, go to your presidents and vote Memphis in the SEC. That’s the easiest way to do it.

“If you’re asking me for a non-conference game, it’s not going to happen.”

While Pastner did not mean the comments to be taken personally, Memphis might have some new unspoken rivalries on its hands.

Pastner: Memphis will never play Arkansas

give me a reason why we could possibly be coming up with excuses not to play yall? exactly, were not scared, we would dominate yall, yall are TERRIBLE, when was the last time yall were ranked?
Because Josh Pastner said "We're not going to play you guys because it will hurt our recruiting"?  Nice question.  Perhaps you should've read the article. You could've had the answer hours ago.

memphis is putting a lock on our high school players so yall dont try and steal them (wich is pretty hard for yall anyway)
If it was so hard, then why is Josh being a little sissy girl on not playing those particular teams you are talking about?

why are you calling josh a dumbass and that hes done nothing for memphis? 41-20 record so far, great recruiting, got NBA coaches and players
Yes, in Conference-USA. I understand he had to pick up a program. But he got great recruits in here right after Calipari left, and so far, the team hasn't done anything worth mentioning nationally. An NIT apperance and a first round loss to Arizona (a good loss, I'll give Memphis that) but still a first round loss in the NCAA Tournament. Also, Josh is actually 49-20 overall as well. Not 41-20 like you said.

Memphis has also been 0-6 against top 25 teams since he started coaching there two years ago, with 0 NCAA Touranment wins. If most coaches got the kind of players Pastner has got the last two years, I'm sure most would be able to do a lot more/better with their team.

You can pretty much say Josh is just a good recruiter and medicore coach.

built more hope after john calipari left us with nothing, and has put us on the path of going into a BCS conference
Absolutely he gave Memphis fans hope again. But lets hope he can actually do something with the team for once. So far he hasn't shown anything looing at my proof above.  The BCS thing couldn't be any more wrong though. Your football program is the reason why Memphis isn't in a BCS conference yet.

Pastner: Memphis will never play Arkansas

The SEC has multiple national championships in basketball.  Arkansas has one. Memphis has none. The SEC has three teams in this year's  pre-season top 10 and a 4th in the top 25. SEC teams obviously dont have to have Memphis players to win games. As far as saying another school's sports programs suck, are you referring to Arkansas? They're 6-1 in football this year and went to the Sugar Bowl last year. Morons like you think because Memphis has been to two basketball final 4's in history, Memphis is some kind of dynasty. Trust me, it's not. You also think your basketball history qualifies you to be in the SEC or another BCS conference. It doesn't. A basketbal team that has had some good years, and some terrible ones, doesnt rate as having strong athletic programs across the board. Memphis never has.   So Pastner is 41-20? How many of those wins were against top 25 teams? How many were against creampuffs and/or C-USA perennial losers? Get over yourself. Memphis will never be in the  SEC, and if it goes to a basketball conference like the Big East, that will only mean that conference has lost it's BCS status or will lose it very soon because of defections.Memphis belongs in the Sun Belt.

I think the comment you are referring to, Mikey, is that you would settle for that slop until something else comes up, for better or worse. Laughing

Glad to see that you have some standards, Mickey.
Not everybody wants to settle down with a standard, typical street corner whore like you, Greg.

Uh, let's see . . . he said if SEC teams want to play Memphis, vote them into the SEC. What don't you get about "NON CONFERENCE" games? And you're calling someone who earned a Masters degree in 3 1/2 years an idiot? Yep, same old MikeSyr.

It's like Memphis is good enough to have sex with, but not good enough to marry.

Pastner: Memphis will never play Arkansas

I'm 100% behind Pastner on this.  SEC schools laugh at the idea of Memphis joining the conference, but complain when they won't play them in basketball.  It's like Memphis is good enough to have sex with, but not good enough to marry.
