The SEC POY was out later than you last night

John Calipari has long preached that "nothing good happens after midnight."

I disagree.

Because some of the very best things that ever happened to me happened well after midnight, and I wouldn't trade those memories for all the Final Fours in the world. That said, I do recognize the point the Kentucky coach is always trying to make, and I'll bet you five bucks Calipari repeats that motto at least 47 times between now and when the Wildcats open the season tonight against Marist.

Yes, UK opens tonight.

And yet Terrence Jones -- the preseason SEC Player of the Year -- was out and about in Lexington at 2:30 this morning, which is around the time he was, along with teammate Stacey Poole, involved in a traffic accident that sent both to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries. To be clear, there's no indication Jones and Poole were at fault; they were apparently hit by an intoxicated driver operating on the wrong side of the road. Calipari posted on his website that no evidence of drugs or alcohol were found on Jones or Poole (or in their vehicle). So it appears this is simply a case of two people being at the wrong place at the wrong time -- although Jones needs to explain why he left the scene of the accident because the only public explanation given to date doesn't make much sense to the rational (and unbiased) mind.

Calipari said Jones left the scene out of "fear of an altercation with the driver of the oncoming vehicle," but who does that? Seriously, who has ever done that? Have you ever done that? I know I've never done that. I can't tell you I've never had friends or heard about people leaving the scene of an early morning accident, but they've always had a reason to do it, and their reasons are usually along the same lines. Never once heard about somebody leaving the scene -- and leaving a friend, much less a teammate -- out of fear of an altercation, especially when that somebody is 6-foot-9 and 250 pounds. But I guess there's a first time for everything. Perhaps this is that first time. Perhaps.

Either way, what was Terrence Jones thinking?

Not about leaving the scene.

About being out so late the night before the season-opener.

When literally the only thing anybody questions about you as a basketball player is your ability to be mature and lead, it seems like you'd want to start eliminating those questions heading into your sophomore season, and being out in the middle of the night less than 24 hours before the opener doesn't do that. It only validates the questions and makes things worse. Jones, simply put, has to be smarter.

I still think he's a terrific talent.

I still think he'll be an All-American.

But popping around town at 2:30 a.m. the night before a game with a guy who is reportedly close to leaving the program can't possibly be a good sign, and it's a helluva way to start what could be a helluva season. Nothing good happens after midnight? Again, I disagree. But if I were a basketball coach, I'd probably say that a bunch, too.

Parrish, you're right about UK fans thinking differently if this was UofL related.  But that is because we are fans.  You are supposedly a journalist but this 'article' would have you mistaken for a rival fan.  You seem to disregard the fact that Jones et al were hit by a drunk driver.  They were not in the wrong.  I like  how this is online within a few hours of the incident becoming public, couldn't get this up fast enough, eh?  And btw, could you post links to the articles you wrote about the UofL players getting tazed and arrested at an alumni function or Knowles beating up his girlfriend's dad over a hair brush, articles that included their coaches reactions?

Coach Cal is a crook and a ignorant, idiotic, lying sack of dog poo.  So no wonder his players are our at 2a before a big game, more than likely boozing it wonder one left the scene of an accident, he probably called Coach Cal and Coach Cal told him to bolt.  Anything Cal says is bs and its only fitting he is the coach of a college program that has HISTORICALLY been in tons of trouble, caught cheating and is downright dirty.  Apple doesnt fall far from the UK tree.

When I lived in Memphis I played bass in a cover band that had several gigs at The Field, a club that Cal had part ownership in. My question is, if he truly feels nothing good happens after midnight, then why was he in there so often with friends entertaining young ladies upstairs in the VIP area?

A non-issue Parrish, and despite your little dig at UK fans thinking otherwise (or not having an "unbiased" mind), the accounts that came out were the intoxicated driver DID engage in an altercation with Jones, and THEN Jones left, and returned to be questioned once police were on the scene.  UK did not have a curfew in effect at this time, so neither Poole nor Jones did anything wrong.  As to Jones having to be smarter, I see nothing in you that qualifies you to judge anything he or anyone else does.  The location of the accident is like half a block from where they live, and there are numerous fast-food places littered all around the area.  I'm sorry if you disagree, but I don't think anyone will begrudge a college sophmore from making a run to the border at 2:30 in the morning if they're hungry.  Again, it is a non-issue.  No UK fan, no UK player and aside from the obligatory comments by Cal, no UK coach thinks otherwise.  No distraction here, no wrong-doing, no story.

The SEC POY was out later than you last night

I see Gary Parrish out frequently late night any day of the week and he has a wife and kids and he's not in college.  Who cares really?  If it wasn't Terrence Jones or Calipari or Kentucky no one would give a damn about a college kid being out late at night with friends and not breaking the law.

I have to agree with Coach Cal's assessment nothing good happens after midnight as that has been a mantra for other coaches before him. Now fun is a different story as lot of good times at that age may happen after midnight or most of them. Besides having a child during those hours I think Mr. Parrish should inform us of the "great things that have happened to him after midnight." That's the million dollar question lets hear it. I want to know at least one of those Great Things besides partying and having fun in general whatever it may be. Since Mr. Parrish strongly disagrees with this point just wanting a little feedback on what that might be! Come on you ought to give something, just one of the the great things!
