It's (past) time to ban midcourt logos

CORONADO, Calif. -- The logos college basketball events put at midcourt are dangerous.

Don't believe me, ask Roy Williams.

"Let's stop putting those stupid logos on the floor where kids slip and slide around," Williams said. "Somebody is going to get hurt, and I've said that for years and years and years."

The North Carolina coach has indeed said that for years and years and years -- proof being that the above quote isn't from Friday night's Carrier Classic. That's actually a quote I found from 2008, a quote Williams delivered after two Tar Heels (Marcus Ginyard and Tyler Hansbrough) slipped on a midcourt logo during a game in Raleigh.

So coaches have literally been fighting this fight for years and years and years.

And yet nothing changes.

There was still a big logo at midcourt for the Carrier Classic ... and it nearly cost Michigan State's Branden Dawson. The 6-foot-6 freshman slipped on the logo while running and twisted his knee. Yes, he later returned. But it looked bad. And it could've been bad. And it's not something the NCAA should allow to continue.

"We've got to get rid of those logos in the middle of the court," Michigan State's Tom Izzo said late Friday. "We can put logos other places. I'll wear logos to support the people who sponsor us. They can paint me. But we have to get rid of the logos for the safety of the players."

Both Izzo and Williams have valid points, and it probably be a hot topic.  And yes, I can see the marine humidity adding to the slippery conditions.  Still, if these two highly respected coaches really want to effectively get their point across to everybody, then they should lead by example.  They should make sure that their home courts are stripped of all extraneous logos or designs.  Paint the home school logos over the entrance ways, or prominently displayed in front of the scorers bench.

I think the players should stop sweating. It puts moisture on the floor and causes them to slip. Stupid article.....

Well, since the quote used in the article was actually from 2008, and considering who was trying to play the role of president at that time, I would have to totally agree with you! And guess what, America did get rid of him and anything that smelled like him that same year.

Do you really think that extra income will bring tickets down?????

They are a bunch of greedy people and is just an excuse to get bigger bonuses for the school and NCAA management. Next year they will raise the price of the logos and the price of the tickets

Example of this in real life are taxes and polititians.

What about playing games in the ocean?

Docked or not, the amount of moisture coming from the ocean is going to cause dangerous conditions. Why not play the game in the arena so people don't get hurt. For some reason I haven't seen court stickers hurt anyone and I've been watching college basketball for a long time. Now after last night's game it is a hot topic? Weird to me. I think they need to stop being fancy and just play basketball inside the gym. If they were actually concerned for their safety, not playing games on boats should be a topic as well.

Just a note, I thought the game was awesome being played on there. It's just too damn dangerous for them to play with all the moisture in the air. I think the stickers are not as dangerous as that. You see the other slips there were in the game not related to the sticker?
