It's (past) time to ban midcourt logos

CORONADO, Calif. -- The logos college basketball events put at midcourt are dangerous.

Don't believe me, ask Roy Williams.

"Let's stop putting those stupid logos on the floor where kids slip and slide around," Williams said. "Somebody is going to get hurt, and I've said that for years and years and years."

The North Carolina coach has indeed said that for years and years and years -- proof being that the above quote isn't from Friday night's Carrier Classic. That's actually a quote I found from 2008, a quote Williams delivered after two Tar Heels (Marcus Ginyard and Tyler Hansbrough) slipped on a midcourt logo during a game in Raleigh.

So coaches have literally been fighting this fight for years and years and years.

And yet nothing changes.

There was still a big logo at midcourt for the Carrier Classic ... and it nearly cost Michigan State's Branden Dawson. The 6-foot-6 freshman slipped on the logo while running and twisted his knee. Yes, he later returned. But it looked bad. And it could've been bad. And it's not something the NCAA should allow to continue.

"We've got to get rid of those logos in the middle of the court," Michigan State's Tom Izzo said late Friday. "We can put logos other places. I'll wear logos to support the people who sponsor us. They can paint me. But we have to get rid of the logos for the safety of the players."

I guess I don't get it......

Same story. Different year.  Since when does common sense overrule the old mighty dollar??

No. The stickers are plastic. They are especially dangersous if moisture (sweat, condensation, etc) is present. The stripes are painted, then have the same lacquer over them as the rest of the floor so traction isn't compromised.

Maybe I'm stupid, but wouldn't all the stripes and 3 point line have the same effect then?

jm, you actually have it backwards. You honestly think you would pay LESS if it was the Orange Bowl vs. the FedEx Orange Bowl or whatever it is now? Without sponsorships and advertising, you'd be paying a lot more to go to an event because the arena/stadium/etc. would need another way to bring in income, i.e. your ticket  prices go up. This isn't an economics class, though it seems you need to take a few.
And advertising actually reduces costs for consumers in many cases. The number of new customers brough in from advertising outweighs the cost of advertising and thus no increased rates from companies that you think are conspiring against you. But again, this is a sports forum, so chill on your propoganda posts.

I'd go a step further.  Get rid of all that junk advertising on the dasher boards in the NHL.
Everytime they show highlights from the past I'm reminded of how shitty it looks today.

I saw the play when it happened, and it looked much worse than it turned out to be.  But I agree with Coach Williams.  Any kind of floor markings that cannot be painted onto the court should not be allowed...

@ petsauce, "sould" instead of "should" is a typo.  And difficulty with English doesn't explain typoes.  So maybe you sHould sue your logic teacher.

They all need to go.  They are extremly ugly, annoying and basically a safety hazard.

Have you seen the new giant logo on the NM Lobos floor?  It goes across the court and covers about 75% of the center of the floor, totally ugly and unsafe for the kids.  The NCAA should limit the number of logos and the sizes of those logos on all courts.
It just makes sense.  Quit being such sellouts to the corporate dollar.

Get rid of the Corporate sponsorship in all means.  I rather have my money paying for my insurance or what have you instead of it paying for their advertising.  It it wasn't paying for this our rates would be much lower than what they are.   I bet 1/2 yours or my monthly premiums  or payments for other items goes toward this crap.  just like bowl sponsorships, leave it as the Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl  and so forth.  We overpay for everything because of the these Corporate morons and CEO's.  Give the money back to us who support things...the people.  And lower the prices so any of us can attend these events.  Get rid of Corporate greed.  Sorry for getting on the bandwagon folks.
