Kentucky's Lamb says 'Cats are more talented

By Jeff Goodman

LEXINGTON, Ky. - John Calipari delivered the message - over and over - about North Carolina's experience while Terrence Jones kept a stone-face while attempting to convey that this was just another game. Senior Darius Miller said all the correct things.

Doron Lamb.

He told the truth. No filter. No BS.

"I think we're more talented offensively and defensively," Lamb said less than 24 hours before top-ranked Kentucky welcomes North Carolina to Rupp Arena.

And what about the two backcourts, Doron?  How do you think they stack up against one another?

"I think we're way more talented," he said.

I wonder if Kendall Marshall and Dexter Strickland will get a look-see at those comments when they arrive in Lexington.

Unlike Jones and even Miller to an extent - who both downplayed the significance of this game - Lamb spoke the truth. To be honest, it's refreshing.

"It's a big game for us," Lamb said. "We want to try and keep our No. 1 spot."

This was supposed to be a battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2. UNLV ruined that when the Running Rebels pulled the upset over North Carolina a week or so ago in Vegas. Now the Tar Heels enter the contest at No. 5 in the country, but the numbers don't matter.

"You want games like this because they help you learn about your team," Calipari said.

Calipari is all about spin, but that's not spin.

No one is really going to care about who won this game if these two teams meet again in April 2 in New Orleans -- as many anticipate to be the case. Both teams will likely be No. 1 seeds entering the NCAA tournament come March and these two clubs will have a different look to them in four months time.

This game is about figuring out your team's deficiencies and trying to correct - or at least - soften them. For North Carolina, it'll be whether they are able to defend and match Kentucky's toughness - among other things. For Kentucky, it'll be whether Marquis Teague can play with poise - and whether Terrence Jones truly is a different player from a year ago -- also among other things.

Calipari and Roy Williams won't commit to continuing this series, using their league slate and other non-conference matchups as an excuse to halt the matchup. So this could be it for a while - so we need to enjoy it.

"The moment I saw it on the schedule, I started looking forward to this game," Lamb said. "Everybody's been talking about it."

Lamb and just about every diehard college hoops fan. You've got no shortage of potential lottery picks -- Anthony Davis, Terrence Jones, Doron Lamb and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist for Kentucky and Harrison Barnes, John Henson and Tyler Zeller with North Carolina - in addition to plenty of others with NBA futures. It'll take place in arguably the most electric environment in college basketball: Rupp Arena.

It won't be a methodical affair as was the case in the previous game for both teams, when North Carolina had to grind one out against Wisconsin and Kentucky was forced to watch St. John's milk the clock in an effort to stay in the game.

Williams and Calipari have athletes - and they let them go.

This should be terrific.

Any predictions, Doron?

"We win," he said with a smile. "And leave the arena by 3 p.m.. -- and then I enjoy my day off Sunday."

Kentucky's Lamb says 'Cats are more talented

Two major reasons in this game the Cats fans are forgetting..  Harrison Barnes has found his stride and will be hard for Kentucky to contain him.  I'd say he shows up and have over 20 pts.  John Henson was in foul trouble early against the game last year and really hurt UNC in that game in the elite 8.  He will also be a difference maker tomorrow.  Should  be a fun game to watch, but with out a doubt Carolina wins this one.  To much experience for UNC and way to much cockiness from Kentucky..  UNC 74 CATS 66..  GO HEELS!!

Thats the most fake ass letter in the world .....Atleast John Calipari is Straight up!!
Shows you are either very young, or just plain naive.  That is classic Roy Williams.  If you knew him, you would understand the passion he has for all things Carolina.  Back in the early days of his coaching career he use to drive all over the state to sell Carolina calendars.  He does not accept anything but a true blue Carolina fan and I support him in his efforts.

By the way..Atleast is two words and capitalizing the "S" in straight kind of implies something that may not be appropriate for this message board.

Kentucky's Lamb says 'Cats are more talented

I really wish he wouldn't say stuff like this, UNC needs no additional motivation.....but Doron does this sort of thing from time to time......it's the Queen, NY coming out in him. He is dead serious though, I'll say that for him....no false bravado. He means it. Very hard to predict ths one. Lot's of cross currents. It could boil down to foul trouble/foul shooting.......I think UK gets a very, very slight nod at home.....but UNC could just as easily rise up and snatch this one.

I think Lamb could ironically be the difference....if he gets hot early, he could be a difference maker. Teague is also a very crutial player......he has to play well.

Which team is most talented ??? No way to determine that......

Prediction: UK 82      UNC 79

Kentucky's Lamb says 'Cats are more talented

December 2nd, 2011

Dear Tarheel faithful:

First of all, they say I should probably apologize to the members of the Rams Club for going off about them selling their tickets to UNLV fans last week.  The loss had me all riled up, but that’s no excuse for treating our generous boosters like that.  Just because one sucker goes rogue doesn’t mean I should fire off at everyone else, right?  Oh, screw this.  You folks who sold your tickets are cotdang sons of something and I am ashamed you wear argyle.  But, I will thank the Rams Club for the case of Coca Cola.  I sure do love Coca Cola in a glass bottle.

With that out of the way, on the eve of our big game against rival Kentucky, let’s focus on banding together as the Tarheel nation.  Although I tell our boys that each game is as important as the next, I’d be a two-faced Tom if I said tomorrow’s wasn’t huge.  In fact, Wanda found my old baby blue leisure suit from my assistant coaching days for the occasion.  Coach Calipari and his boys are a darn good team, and it will take our A-game to get away with a win.

For those of you making the trip to Lexington for the first time, you are in for a treat.  It is a fine college town.  And don’t worry, I have confirmed that Rupp Arena only sells Coca Cola products.  Don’t roll your eyes at me–there are also several fine bars and restaurants surrounding Rupp Arena that serve wine for you high-fallutin’ types.  Be sure to get out and wear that argyle with pride!

Speaking of argyle pride, I hear tickets for tomorrow’s game are going for a mighty high price with the scalpers.  I don’t think we need to revisit this, but please don’t sell your tickets to Kentucky fans.  I know, I know, $500 a ticket is a lot of wine and cheese, but you’re my people.  And my people don’t do that.  I have no problem pulling out my old Red Ryder and burning some bottoms if I have to.  Furthermore, I expect you all to be on your best behavior tomorrow.  We’re North Carolina, not Presbyterian College.  Rupp Arena is enemy territory, but if the fella next to you in the wrong shade of blue says something mean, don’t muck in the mud with him–that’s not the Carolina Way.

Sadly, we may face the Wildcats without one of our best players, PJ Hairston, who has a “sprained wrist.” Back in my day, we’d just throw some extra tape on that puppy and go, but it must be bad, because the daggum thing didn’t get better even when I sprayed it with Windex.  Even though he felt the need to tell everyone about his injury yesterday on the tweeter, he’s a heck of a player and if he can’t go, we sure will miss him.  And don’t worry, he won’t get fat and lazy on that bench, I’ve got him running sprints all around the Dean Dome as we speak for telling our business to the internet people.

That just means our other boys will have to pick up the slack.  Over the past two games, they’ve been so out of it they might as well have been tiptoeing through the tulips.  Kentucky goes at a much faster pace and unless we hustle, they’ll run us out of Rupp Arena.  That ole slickster Calipari and his guys snuck by us back in March and I’m sick and tired of reading about how good they are in the papers.  It’s time for the world to step up and respect the baby blue.

Friends, see you tomorrow at high noon for a great, great college basketball game.  Go Tarheels.

Kentucky's Lamb says 'Cats are more talented

I LOVE this rivalry and hope Cal keeps it going into the future.  Arguably the two most storied programs in college basketball history.  I also love the fact that fans of both schools like to pick the period of time in which they want to compare stats.  I personally would love for UK to bring back Tubby Smith, but I don't think that will happen in time for the game tomorrow.

Cal is a great recruiter and I think he doesn't get the credit for being a good in-game coach that he should.  That said, I think Carolina has been looking forward to this game since March.  UNC's defense is a lot better than UK fans are giving it credit for, and I hope, better than the UK players are expecting.

I am expecting a UNC victory.  If they can hit their fouls shots, it should be by double digits.  Wouldn't that set the table for a GREAT National Championship game in April?
