Indiana's win worthy of Crean celebration

By Jeff Goodman

Tom Crean can celebrate however he wants after this one. He could be yelling and screaming buck naked in the lobby of Assembly Hall and it would be fine with me (OK, I take that one back).

I mocked the Indiana coach last season after he went bananas in the lobby of Assembly Hall following a home victory over Illinois. However, Saturday's victory against top-ranked Kentucky? Well, that's worthy of a full-pledged party well into the night for Crean and the Hoosiers.

This may wind up becoming a defining moment for the Indiana program in the Crean Era - one that had some fans and many around the country questioning whether the Hoosiers would be nationally relevant again.

Kentucky was more talented at every single position on the court, but Indiana took control of the game in the second half, and after blowing a 10-point lead, got a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Christian Watford for the 73-72 upset.

The Hoosiers showed mental resolve.

This Hoosiers team has officially turned the corner. They hadn't really beaten anyone of note until now (Butler and N.C State don't quite count), but should make their way into the Top 25 for the first time since Kelvin Sampson was running things and making illegal phone calls in Bloomington.

It was nice to see Assembly Hall rocking again because the fans in Bloomington are rabid - and are deserving of success. Indiana doesn't blow you away, but now Crean has enough talent and experience to compete with the big boys.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, however, and start proclaiming the Hoosiers as a clear-cut NCAA tournament team. The Hoosiers aren't going to challenge Ohio State for the Big Ten title. They remain undefeated, but still need to fare well in Big Ten play to ensure themselves of dancing come March.

Watford doesn't always show up, but it was Kentucky's Terrence Jones who played the role of the magician on Saturday, doing his best disappearing act with just four points and a lone rebound in the contest. Watford went for 20 points in the victory while freshman Cody Zeller, Will Sheehey, Victor Oladipo and Jordan Hulls all played well.

Crean has had a rough go thus far in his tenure, finishing near the bottom of the league each of his three seasons. Recruiting has certainly picked up in the past year or so and Cream got over one hurdle when he took down Butler's Brad Stevens last month. But this one was far more important.

Crean knocked off the No. 1 team in the land. The almighty John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats.

If that's not worthy of a party, I'm not sure what is.

Indiana's win worthy of Crean celebration

The prickish side of me wants to say the only thing IU fans are envious of about UK is not getting envelopes from FedEx filled with cash...  The civil side of me says people who live in glass houses should not throw stones.  UK has a long history of breaking NCAA rules as exemplified by the "Death Penalty" given the basketball program. Transgressions include: Point Shaving, Academic Fraud, Cash Payments, Improper Calls and a laundry list of other non violations including Legendary Coach Rupp's  blatant racism. These certainly tarnish what should be a storied program.  Calling IU fans "classless" was meant to be mean and disparaging.  Classless is UK fans trading their dignity for wins, time after time.  I'd trade IU's transgressions versus UK's in both a court of law and a court of public opinion any time.  Hiring Calapari highlights UK's 'deal with the devil' attitude.  He has left two programs having to abandon and forfeit tournament wins due to flagrant violations.  He magically had no knowledge of what was going on... Odd's are that it will happen again.  As an avid IU fan, I do not wish this on UK or their fans.  It's been devastating to live with the shame of K Sampson's actions and the stain on an otherwise spotless university.  For IU fans to suffer through the 3 plus years of consequences of Sampson, certainly winning last night's game against a team with arguably the best athletes in the country was their first real taste of recovery.  As long as no one was hurt, I absolutely support their fervor.  I only hope that UK fans will someday rush the court, if only to tell the university they will no longer tolerate the continued sins for the sake of winning basketball.

Indiana's win worthy of Crean celebration

You are a moron and have no idea what you are talking about.....  IU fans are not jealous of UK, trust me, because it is only a matter of time until UK goes down in flames, but hey, that is normal for UK.  They would rather sell out to a cheater than "rebuild" like IU is doing the right way.  The students at IU haven't been there before, by the way.  They weren't even born when IU won last time in '87, so they don't know what it is like to be a champion or beat a number one.  I see a WKU icon on your name, so what do you know anyways about sports.  You, my friend, appeat to be the jealous one of UK....

Indiana's win worthy of Crean celebration

You are an idiot. IU and its fans have been through hell the last few years. We are not envious of Kentucky, we just want our program to be relevant again. We beat you at home when you were number one in the country. We won 12 games last year. This is a huge win by players who haven't had a lot of success. If you call storming the court after this win classless then you my friend really don't know what sports is about. Is this the greatest win in the history of IU? No. Is it up there? Yes. So sorry if your precious feelings were hurt by our "classless" fans.

Indiana's win worthy of Crean celebration

@CoolLikeDat11Deron Lamb stated that coach Cal instructed them to foul . Each player was waiting for someone else to do it .

Indiana's win worthy of Crean celebration

I picked UK to win 72-71 and was prepared to watch a close competive basketball game , I got what I wished for .I do not consider this game a MAJOR upset . The win by IU dropped UK to 5th in my poll and raised IU to 9th . Great December game between 2 great programs that have had a heated rivalry for decades . The only thing that tarnished the game was the classless ( or clueless ) fans that stormed the court after the game . I will try to educate . When UK played Florida, when Florida was ranked @1, a few years ago at Rupp Areana there was great debate on what do do when UK won , not if . By rushing the floor you are telling your players that you did not have faith in them to win , the ultimate compliment to your opponent . There are 5 national championship banners hanging in assembly hall , IU fans , act like you have been there before . But as a UK fan it is nice to see how some other programs , ie IU , envy UK basketball , A lengthly standing ovation for your team would be the ultimate compliment for YOUR team , Rushing the floor showed how you envy UK basketball . Thanks for the compliment IU fans , as classless as it was . Great game IU players , I wish you well in the Big 10 .

Indiana's win worthy of Crean celebration

Well IU is undefeated from beating the likes of Stetson, Gardner-Webb, and that basketball powerhouse Stony Brook.

Look a win over a #1 team is impressive, no matter who it is and how it is done, and where. But it's December, and it's in March when it is finally determined who the better teams are.

Indiana will not get into the NCAA tournament because it beat Kentucky at home. It will depend on how they do in their conference games, and especially how they do on the road.

Indiana's win worthy of Crean celebration

someone apparently took offense to my UK shouldkve fouled post. facts are facts...with 5.6 sec left and up by two with two fouls to foul. Look at my post for what it is...a factual post from a college basketball fan. I am by NO means a UK fan. I am by NO means an IU fan. check my profile and you would understand why. Good game, though.
