Syracuse's Scoop Jardine welcomes No. 1 spot

It's really been a huge distraction for Scoop Jardine and the Syracuse Orange.

That's sarcasm, folks, since Syracuse -- which has been under the national microscope for the last few weeks in the midst of the Bernie Fine sexual assault allegations -- will likely take the No. 1 spot on Monday when the new national polls are released.

The Orange improved to 10-0 after Saturday's rout over George Washington -- and with top-ranked Kentucky and No. 2 Ohio State both losing, the 'Cuse should move up to No. 1.

"All everyone is talking about is the scandal and I've used that to the guys as far as people disrespecting us as a team," Jardine told CBSSports.com on Saturday. "We didn't have anything to do with the scandal, don't know anything about it. This is our season."

Jardine has a point. Each time Syracuse wins a game, the first thing everyone talks or thinks about is Fine.

"They talk about that and maybe show one or two highlights," Jardine said. "No disrespect to everything that's going on, because obviously it's serious, but this is our season."

Jardine said that this team has taken a cue from its even-keeled leader, Boeheim, who hasn't appeared rattled throughout all the scrutiny.

"He hasn't let is distract him," Jardine said. "And it hasn't been a distraction to us, either."

Jardine said he welcomes the bulls-eye on the team's back once it gets anointed as the No. 1 team in the nation.

"It's something I want," Jardine said. "Something we want."

Next up for Syracuse, though, is its first true road game on Saturday against N.C. State. The Orange have beaten Florida and Marshall at the Carrier Dome and Virginia Tech and Stanford at Madison Square Garden, but a hostile environment is a different story.

"Kentucky went to Indiana and look what happened," Jardine said. "We know you can get beat anytime on the road."

But already, Jardine is enjoying it. He read a text he just received moments after the game from former Orange star Carmelo Anthony.

"Great job. We're number one. Time to really focus. Time to turn it up a notch and lock in."

With everything that's been going on since the middle of last month, one thing that can't be questioned is this team's focus.

"The only reason SU is number one is because they started at 5..."

I'm going out on a limb here, but didn't they start at 5 because a lot of people thought they were a really good team?  The only reason UNC was #1 was because they started out at #1.  The only reason UK was #1 was because they started...yada, yada, yada.  God, I feel dumb just typing that.

Who knows if SU is better than any team in the top 5-10-25.  They are ranked #1 based on their talent and their results thus far.  Again, that's how this thing works.  And if you're a Cuse fan (or any fan for that matter), it's nice to see your team ranked #1.  It feels good, especially considering what's going on right now.

YES CUSE DOESNT PLAY A LOT OF GREAT TEAMS TO BEGIN THE SEASON BUT YOU ARE FORGETTING THAT THEY PLAY IN THE BIG EAST, CBS'S NUMBER 1 CONFERENCE, WHICH HAS 6-8 TEAMS ALWAYS IN THE TOP 25.  ALSO FOR ALL YOU HATERS EVERY ANANYLST OUT THERE HAS CUSE IN THE FINAL FOUR AND SOME OF THE HAVE THEM WINNING IT.

Syracuse is number 1 as things now stand. They weren't number 1 last week and they may not be number 1 next week, but for now they are. Get over it. Waaaa, waaaaa, waaaa! Bunch of graceless cry-babies on this board.

Are you suggesting rankings shouldn't change based on game results

Everyone must have forgotten how many boards Marshall snatched away from SU.  40+.  When SU finally plays a real good frontcourt, we will see.  The only reason SU is number one is because they started at 5 not having played a game.  Then teams one through four lost.  That doesn't mean SU is better than any of those teams.  They haven't played them.  OSU lost ONLY because Sullinger was out.  Remember what happened to SU two years ago when AO got injured in the BET?  SU...as a team lost a dimension that they didn't get back.  KU is a darn good team, but OSU healthy will be a bunch for anyone.  SU will get theirs...and so will about 9 other teams that are just as dangerous as SU.  Who is cutting down the nets in April is all that matters.  Just a reminder...SU wasn't a thought in the polls the year they won it all.  What happened to all those opinions that year?

But you guys enjoy it if it means a bunch to you.  That is why Gary puts this out there.

They did play Florida who is a very good team and played good tests at MSG in Stanford (prob the best team in the PAC 12) and perennial bubble team ViTech.  Marshall also was a solid win as they will give Memphis a run for their money in Conference USA.  Agreed they haven't played a schedule like any of the other top 5 teams yet and we'll see how they do with their first true road game at NC State this Saturday.  They also have a pretty easy start to their Big East schedule when they do start it.

I love you Cuse haters. For one, you have no idea about how good this team is.  Its one of the BEST teams ever assembled at SU.  This team is as good, maybe better than the Coleman/Douglas team.  Before you has an opionion understand what you are talking about.  This team is legit.  You will see, especially when we run your team down, whoever they are...

Syracuse is the obvious No. 1 team in land.  There are just a handfull of teams that can maybe match their talent, but none can match their depth of talent.  The same can be said for the depth of upper class leadership, which includes Scoop mentioned above, along with Kris Joseph and Triche.  One and dones are nice, but their leadership still needs to be obtained.

No one, and I mean no one outside of NY believe Syracuse is not the best team in the country.

I agree no one outside of NY believes Syracuse is not the best team in the country. I am pretty sure no one inside NY believes Syracuse is not the best team in the country either.
Oh, and I am from VA!

Default?  Um, that's how the rankings work, big guy.  If you lose, you move down.  If you win, you move up.  Are you suggesting the rankings shouldn't change based on game results?

I'm in Iowa and I think they are the #1 team in the country right now.
