Cincinnati's Cronin's words were just that: Words

Mick Cronin's actions needed to be as forceful as his words.

They weren't.

Star big man Yancy Gates, after delivering a right-hand that knocked Xavier's fellow heavyweight to the floor, received a six-game suspension. Cincinnati also suspended Octavius Ellis and Cheikh Mbodj, who stomped on Frease while he was down on the court, for six games -- and Ge'Lawn Guyn for one game.

Gates should have received -- at minimum -- a 10-game penalty, maybe even being tossed from the team for good. Cronin talked a big game after Saturday's brawl, one that was embarrassing for all parties.

"We accept full responsibility and it will be handled," Cronin said. "There is zero excuse for that in basketball. ... The fact is the guys ... represent an institution of higher learning. Xavier has been a great school for years. We're trying to cure cancer at Cincinnati. I go to school at a place where they ... created Benadryl; I think that's more important than who wins a basketball game. And our guys need to have an appreciation that they're there on a full scholarship and they better represent the institution with class and integrity. ... I just told my guys I will meet with my AD and my president and I'm going to decide who is on the team going forward. That's what the University of Cincinnati is about. Period. I've never been this embarrassed."

Cronin talked about how these kids need to appreciate the value of education, how they need to act accordingly -- or they won't ever be allowed to put on a Bearcats uniform.

He had an opportunity to follow through with his strong message in the post-game news conference -- one that was applauded by nearly everyone. (Doyel: Cronin talked the talk)

Then he opted not to follow through on his strong statements, and hit Gates, who did his best Mike Tyson impression when he sent Frease to the canvas, with just six games.

I understand that it was a mistake, one Gates would love to take back. But it's not as though Gates has been the model citizen, either. He's been suspended by Cronin previously -- and the penalty should have been more severe for this transgression.

But winning is more important to Cronin. At least that's what his actions said.

He needs Gates, especially when Big East play rolls around.

Gates will miss games against Wright State, Radford, Arkansas Pine-Bluff, Chicago State, Oklahoma and Pittsburgh.

That's a grand total of one conference game.

Cincinnati's Cronin's words were just that: Words

This incident is similiar to the fight between Ohio State and Minnesota when Bill Mussleman was coaching the Gophers. Luke Witte(a white player for Ohio State) was kicked in the groin by Ron Behagen(black player) and stomped on the head and spat upon by Corky Taylor(black player). Dave Winfield was chasing Ohio State players around the court. Race became a big part of this fight. Steve Nix a white player for Minnesota was told to get off the court, it was none of his business, while his teammates took care of Luke Witte.

Isn't it strange that of all the players Cincinatti pummelled on Xavier they select the White player. How many white players are on the Xavier team? Two out of 14 yet they went after the white player. I don't know if race was involved in this matter just saying it's very strange.

I think if you reversed this situation, you'd have Jesse Jackson all over this.

Dude, since when did OSU become a good academic institution?  Cincy has a much better academic reputation.  OSU is all about the athletic department, sorry

Wow, where do I start?  OSU does not want to be UC in any way, shape or form.  OSU is by FAR the better academic institution, has a much better football program and has a much better basketball program.  Have you noticed that there isn't a number next to UC's team name when they play?  That means they're not ranked, big guy.  Cincnnati's last two stars, Gates and Lance Stephenson, have been embarrassments to humanity.  Remember when Stephenson pushed his girlfriend down the stairs?  Ya, that's a much more egregious offense than selling memorabilia and receiving free tattoos.  UC, however, has long desired to be like OSU, but their lack of both academic and athletic prowess have left them a million miles away.  Also, your "creative" uses of grammar, spelling and syntax lead me to believe that you attended UC.  Congratulations on that one, little man.

I am not a cincy fan or a cronin fan but I think 6 games is sufficient.

We have to remember, these are KIDS. (I didnt consider myself a grown until my late 20s.

Not only that, this was a very physical game with way too much trash talking. Mistakes by both coaches & officials contributed. &n

Its EASY for us to sit here in our easy chairs & judge them but I still remember getting worked up in high school church ball.

And a few years later, I wasnt a boatload more mature.

And lets not forget that if Gates gets kicked out again, he is automatically done for the season.

So, while I hate cincy from years of them beating my teams teeth in, this is sufficient punishment.

Xups I am not a fan of either team. After watching the game and the replay more than once I have to say that Xavier is equally at fault. Up to yesterday I felt that Tu was being unfairly discriminated against in the player of the year talk, now I realize he is just a ghetto thug with no future outside of basketball.

I am a Xavier fan.  And I am a bit ashamed that Tu Holloway only got one game.  It was Tu that threw the 1st blow.  He started all the maylay with his left hand at Guyn. But if he would have kept his composure, and not run his mouth and attempt a punch at Guyn, we wouldn't be talking about any of this.  But it was the Holloway left and the Push by Xavier that started it all.  The benches cleared directly after the left handed attempt by Holloway on Guyn.

I would have liked to have seen Gates get more, but Tu started it with his mouth, then his left hand, then the benches cleared.

Tu's comments after the game makes it difficult to be a Xavier fan too.  "We Gangsta"  Are you kidding me.  This has been an ongoing problem with Tu, and this is no way to send a message to him.  One game isn't enough for Tu, and I am not afraid to admit that.

I am not a Xavier fan or a UC fan but a shove/push and/or trash talking (while not acceptable behavior) is definitely not the same as punches thrown and kicking/stomping.  It looked like Xavier suspended the guy who started with a push 4 games and Holloway 1.  I have no problem with those penalties but if Lyons really took a swing then he and the walk on who got 2 and 4 games should have gotten 10 along with the Cincy stomper/kicker.  Gates without a doubt should have been kicked off the team (let's see what he did - throw a basketball at someone, punch not one but 2 guys and tried to swing at a 3rd guy or at least put his fists up like he was going to).  if Cronin thinks 6 games is a fair puinishment (making him look like a huge hypcrite from his words), then he is joking b/c the Big East or the NCAA will come out and at least increase that to 10 games if they don't suspend him for the year.  I see a lot of UC fans on here criticizing the Xavier penalties but the point is he laid a guy out with a sucker punch and that is not the same as any other offense from any of the players on each of the teams.

Tu Holloway started all of this. No, Sean Kilpatrick shouldn't have been talking shit about him beforehand, but Holloway was yelling at the UC bench since before the game started and initiated the actual fight at the end. Why does he only get a one game suspension? Cronin might have talked a bigger game than he's willing to play, but give him credit in comparison to most coaches.

X players were talking but UC started the pushing first. Frease never laid a hand on anyone and Cheikh Mbodj and Gates combined to blind side and then kick Frease in the face. Thats a b!tch move.  You also probably missed the part where the middle-aged women threw a cell phone at Frease at the end of the game and tried to hit him.  X players were defending themselves.  You sound like a typical ignorant UC fan.  Check your facts next time before you start pointing the fingers
