Jared Sullinger gave up late-night snacks and his favorite foods this past summer and shed about 25 pounds of baby fat in an effort to become more versatile and increase his stamina. He was primed for a huge season. Instead, he's caught the injury bug.

The once-rotund Ohio State sophomore big man, who entered the season as the frontrunner for National Player of the Year honors, missed last weekend's loss at Kansas with back spams and then suffered a bone bruise in his foot today. He's listed as day-to-day, but if I'm Thad Matta, I'm going to be extra cautious because the Buckeyes have no shot at going to the Final Four without Sully. None. Sullinger said via twitter that he's fine -- and will be "back at it tomorrow."

I'm no doctor, but I'd sit him for the next three games - all home contests - to make sure he gets right. Really right. Up next Tuesday is Lamar, then comes Miami (Ohio) followed by the Big Ten opener against Northwestern. Even if the Buckeyes happen to lose two of them, it's no big deal. Maybe they wind up being a No. 2 seed instead of a No. 1. It's not worth the risk.

All that truly matters is to have Sullinger's back and foot issues behind him when the ball drops in Times Square, signaling the 2012. The ideal approach to do that is to give him a couple weeks off. Sure, it could also cost Sullinger Player of the Year honors. But that's irrelevant in the bigger picture - which is having a chance to win a national title.

With a healthy Sullinger, Ohio State can compete with anyone in the country. They have a terrific point guard in Aaron Craft, a big-time scoring wing in William Buford - and Deshaun Thomas showed his offensive capabilities by exploding for 30 in Saturday's win at South Carolina. Matta understands this better than anyone -- dealing with injuries to star players. Greg Oden went through it in his time in Columbus and Evan Turner's back cost him significant time. Those guys were able to come back healthy when it mattered most.

Let's hope Sullinger is as fortunate.

Jared Sullinger's holiday gift? Relaxation

Is this for real? The answer to getting your toe stepped on is, take a couple weeks off? I don't think Sullinger is that much of a pu$$y.

What an odd column.  If he's better, he'll play.

I'm the biggest Northwestern fan ever, but I think Ohio State can take all 3 of their upcoming games...

This guy actually has a job at CBS Sports?  I know were a better team with Sully out there,  but to say even if we lose two
of three of the next few games is absurd.    There at home against Lamar, Miami of Ohio and Northwestern.  Northwestern
has some big men inside that we could use Sully, but I still don't think we'll lose to them either.   Quit sniffing so much glue
in the office sir.

I agree that they should sit him, but I disagree they could do nothing in March without him.  They didn't look half bad this game or AT KANSAS.  There is a lot of talent surrounding Sullinger and I believe they could construct a new game plan and have almost Elite 8 level talent even without Sullinger.

OBVIOUSLY he helps, but there are some nice parts here.

Does he honestly believe they could lose two of the next three games. Even without sullinger, Ohio State is a talented team and would not come close to losing to miami ohio lamar or northwestern.

went to the NCSU/Syracuse game.  Not that impressed with Syracuse. NCSU is a good team, not great, and had two big runs on them.  If it wasn't for the NCSU sloppy play, they would have probably beaten them.
