Want to watch UK practice? Today you can

By Gary Parrish

Ever wanted to watch John Calipari run a basketball practice?

If so, today is your lucky day.

Because the Kentucky Wildcats will take the court at around 5:30 p.m. ET, and the entire practice will be streamed live at this link. To my knowledge, no other high-major program has ever done such a thing on a random December day, but it should surprise nobody that Calipari is doing it. The man is always trying to come up with new ways to market and promote his program, and this is merely the latest example. He'll have recruits all over the country on the internet looking in why the AP's third-ranked team practices at the Craft Center, and those recruits will see all those banners representing national championships while they're watching. It's almost like an unofficial visit without the expenses. It's innovative and wise.

Will it be like a real Calipari practice?

Honestly, I doubt it.

I spent four years sitting in on pretty much every practice Calipari conducted at Memphis as his beat writer at The Commercial Appeal, and there's two things I learned while doing it. One is that he's a way better coach than most realize. The other is that virgin ears should be kept away. So my guess is that Calipari will tone down the language and run a simple practice designed to do nothing more than get his players moving around a little post-Christmas break. But it'll still be worth checking out, you know, just in case Terrence Jones starts being kinda selfish.

jdgilbys5 - Perhaps you make a point. But I do read the Eye on Basketball because 1) CBS Sports.com has the most accessible sports news and often the most accurate; 2) because I want to; and 3) because there exists a cadre of fans who seem to think their school walks on water.

I do not judge you, even though you have judged me. I do not expect plaudits from you. If I have said something non-factual please state that. If you don't like what I write but cannot refute it you can, you know, ignore it. Judgments are for those who reveal themselves with their judgments. I hope you and I can both come here and enjoy the give and take as fellow members. I think Parrish is an excellent writer. There is just this one flaw which repeatedly crops up. Even great writers can improve.

Good article.  People from all over the country wanted to watch this practice.  Maybe in the next several years some other coaches will want to do the same thing,  Coach Cal is miles or years ahead of all the other coaches.

@lee3022 - Your post is smarmy, yet condescending.  Why put us or yourself through the torture?  Just don't read stuff about UK or anything written by Parrish.  Problem solved.

Great work Gary. I love to see the behind the scens of practices from quality programs. Bilas did some several weeks back on Kansas and Kentucky but they were way to short, probably cause the mothership gave him a 2 minute threshold on each. You continue to provide footage that only few columnist have the persistence to retrieve. GREAT WORK!

Want to watch Gary practice? Today you can

The man is always trying to come up with new ways to market and promote his program, and this is merely the latest example.
Nobody who reads here regularly needed to glance up to see who the writer of this might be. Nobody needs to be reminded of Gary Parrish's fetish for Calipari. So who else would sucker into a blatant marketing maneuver than Parrish? Who else would be so owned by a coach, any coach. Is this illegal? Probably not. Is it fair? Probably not. Is it just what we pay for to read here. Jeff is likely hiding his head over in his cubicle repeating again and again 'Gary who?' in denial. This does not pass the smell test. But skunks rarely do.

But why stop there, Gary? Why not toot the guy’s horn while you are on the subject? What's that? Oh, yes indeed you did:

One is that he's a way better coach than most realize.
Hmmm - ranked second in the country this week. Although he has never won the championship he has had two Final Four seasons vacated. Yes, Gary, we get that he can coach and that rules are simple things to work around for the man. But you still believed we needed this advertisement. Thanks Gary. You are so kind to remind us.
