Western Kentucky has scheduled a Friday afternoon press conference to announce that Ken McDonald will no longer serve as the school's men's basketball coach. The development comes less than 24 hours after the Hilltoppers lost a home game in overtime when officials didn't realize Louisiana-Lafayette scored the game-winning basket with six players on the court.

“I have recommended to President Gary Ransdell that Ken McDonald no longer serve as our head men’s basketball coach, and he has agreed and supports my decision," said WKU athletic director Ross Bjork. "President Ransdell and I met with Coach McDonald this morning to inform him of the decision, and then we met with and informed the entire men’s basketball staff. I also met with our student-athletes and discussed the reasons for our conclusion and told them that we are committed to all of them as students and athletes here at WKU, and we owe them the ‘great program’ they signed up for."

McDonald was in his fourth season at the school. The former Texas assistant led WKU to a 25-9 record in his first season and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament. He went 21-13 in 2009-10 and 16-16 last season. The Hilltoppers were 5-11 this season with a freshman-heavy roster.

Assistant Ray Harper will coach the rest of the season on an interim basis.

Western Kentucky plays Troy on Saturday.

WKU fires Ken McDonald after controversial loss

Wow! The officials didn't notice, the announcers didn't notice, the coaches didn't notice, the players didn't notice, the score keeper didn't notice, and the fans didn't seem to notice. Maybe they should fire everyone. There has to be more to this story to do this in midseason. However, it was a nice play - if you get away with it.

WKU has a record of going to the tournament and making some noise. McDonald should of been fired last year but he took a pay cut to stay and coach the team. He also has had some off the court issues like getting bj's in the parking structure and not being a family man. His first year he coached D. Horns players to the tournament but really hasn't done anything since. Plus you can't lose a game when a team has 6 players on the court, you gotta point that out.

Is thre more to this?
Team had seven freshmen - and started four.  Would expect a team in this stage to be allowed to "develop" - odd.

Its business.  This happens all the time in college basketball.  That is why coaches should get automatic 5 year gaurantee contracts when hired.  They fire coaches after 3 or 4 seasons now and first, depending on when the coach is hired, he has his first true recruiting class after his first season.  Then he needs time to develop those players at the mid-major level.  Sadly, this happens now all the time.  If the coach can't win quick, he gets the boot.  If they received guaranteed 5 year contracts, this would first give them time to develop their own recruiting class and second, it would make schools darn sure about a coach before they hire them.  Until we see this, we will continue to see coaches not get a chance to prove themselves.

SO, this guy takes a program that has probably been the Big Dance a total of five times in their history to the Dance his first year, backed it up with 21 wins, AND had to watch some idiot refs screw his team out of a win, and they can him??  WTH is up with THAT?

Has to be more to this story, otherwise, maybe the AD is who should have been shown the door.  Makes no sense unless they're hiding details of something else.

so good coach, has led you team to good records and is now struggling with a freshman or young team and you fire him. If there is not more to this story then WKU is not a great place to work. Who knows in a year or two you will have a solid experienced team and hopefully they dont all leave with the coach at years end.
