The Poll Attacks

The Missouri beat writer is voting Missouri fourth.

I don't like it because it's wrong.

But I kinda like it because it's ballsy.

Either way, I wrote about it (and other things) in the Poll Attacks.

(Don't believe me, keep reading.)

Associated Press poll: Jeff Goodman and I ranked Missouri second in the Top 25 (and one). I believe that's right where the Tigers belong based on their body of work, but I can understand somebody putting Kentucky, Ohio State and/or Syracuse ahead of them. It would be wrong, in my opinion. But a reasonable argument could be made. So I'm not gonna freak out about the five AP voters who have Missouri ranked fourth this week. I just think it's funny that one of them is Steve Walentik from the Columbia Daily Tribune.

Yes, Steve covers Missouri in Columbia.

And he's one of the few ranking the Tigers too low.

But I kinda dig it because I know Steve must be catching hell -- especially since he has Big 12 rival Kansas ranked one spot ahead of Missouri despite the fact that KU has three losses (including a loss to unranked Davidson) while Missouri has just one loss (at Kansas State) and is coming off a road win (at Baylor) that's better than any road win the Jayhawks possess. I mean, how strong-willed do you have to be to (incorrectly) rank the team you cover lower than 60 of the other 65 AP voters? That takes some balls.

So I hereby declare Steve Walentik an anti-homer.

He could make the All Anti-Homer Beat Writer Team that'll be unveiled in March.

Anyway ...

Norm Wood screwed up pretty good this week.

He writes for a newspaper in Virginia.

He has Wisconsin ranked 10th and Marquette unranked, which is stupid for three reasons.
  1. Wisconsin shouldn't be ranked 10th anywhere.
  2. Marquette shouldn't unranked anywhere.
  3. Wisconsin shouldn't be ranked ahead of Marquette
Marquette is ahead of Wisconsin in the AP poll, the Coaches poll and the Top 25 (and one) because though Marquette and Wisconsin have similar bodies of work -- both have one win over a currently ranked team -- Marquette actually has a win at Wisconsin. That's got to count for something. But Norm has Wisconsin ranked 10th and Marquette unranked, and I bet that doesn't make sense to the folks in Milwaukee.

Or the folks in Moraga.

My guess is they're just as confused about Norm's decision to put Wisconsin so far ahead of Marquette as they are about his decision to put Gonzaga seven spots ahead of their Saint Mary's Gaels. In case you haven't been following the WCC, here's what you need to know: SMC and Gonzaga -- like Wisconsin and Marquette -- have similar bodies of work, but SMC owns an 83-62 win over Gonzaga.

Again, that's got to count for something.

I'm not saying Saint Mary's is clearly better than Gonzaga.

I'm just saying you can't have Gonzaga ranked seven spots ahead of Saint Mary's right now.

I mean, you can.

I guess.

But look at what happens when you do it.

Coaches poll: Last week was a prove-it week for New Mexico.

Some folks were already ranking the Lobos.

Others -- like us -- were not.

But what we all agreed on last Monday was that New Mexico would have a chance to prove or disprove it belongs because the Lobos had upcoming games against nationally ranked San Diego State (at home) and UNLV (on the road), and I had basically decided that a split would be enough to launch Steve Alford's team into the Top 25 (and one).

But the Lobos lost both games.

They lost 75-70 at home to San Diego State and 80-63 on the road at UNLV.

So why is New Mexico still getting votes in the coaches poll?

Answer: I don't kow.

New Mexico is 15-4 with zero wins over schools receiving votes in either major poll and two losses to teams (New Mexico State and Santa Clara) that aren't receiving votes. In other words, the Lobos are good ... but they're good with an extremely thin resume. They had two chances to record a notable win last week, but they couldn't do it. And that's why they shouldn't be on anybody's ballot until they show that they can.

In response to Nltiger.....great comment.  Mizzou is ranked at the very top of the conference academically but where oh where is KU?

Terms a mizzery grad could understand? I really should not appease your stupidity but I feel compelled to: That "Mizzery" school you just referred to is a FAR better school than Kansas. What are KU's requirements for admission anyway? I believe it is along the lines of an 18 on the ACT and like a 2.5 cumulative high school GPA? Get real dude, sure your better than basketball traditionally, but not this year......and don't even get me started on football, I mean my God you guys are just plain awful. Mizzou grads are better at life.

Every win is a plus and each loss is a big minus for Mizzou.  K-State beat us on every level, yet we went out the next game and got a W.  Up or down I am a Mizzour fan and always will be.  We have to win down the finishing line to realize our true worth.  KU fans will never give Mizzou a thumbs up and yet many Mizzou fans give KU credit on a good win.  And so it goes.  I hope the beating we took at K-State sticks with our team for the remainder of the season and Mizzou plays it tough each game to the very end of our schedule.

Missouri is definitely worth the ranking of #2.  They have beaten some good teams and are 4th in scoring national.  Tigers will be number 1! SOON!  ROCK CHALK CHICKENHAWK......................GO

I find it funny how certain "knowledgeable" KU fans on here will call the loss vs. Davidson a "road" game. The Sprint Center, for all intents and purposes, may have as well been Allen Fieldhouse. It's a Kansas City venue vs. a team from South Carolina. It's technically a neutral site game, but is the Sprint Center really not a pro KU crowd? I'm not sayin' it's the Phog, but it really wasn't that neutral, either. Neutral was playing Georgetown or Duke in Maui. That loss to Davidson, per KU standards, is a turd, and turds can't be polished. I don't know if KU beats OSU if Sullinger plays (even @ Allen Fieldhouse). They won the game by 11. The Buckeyes w/ Sullinger DESTROYED the same Duke team KU lost to in Maui. I don't know either if KU beats OSU if the game was in Columbus, but it's doubtful.

We can downplay our enemies' schedules all we want, but you can't deny this one truth: they EACH have to go out and still get W's.

I'm a Mizzou fan, and their loss to K-State was a turd. I won't try and polish it, except to say at least it was a TRUE road game. They have a quality road win now under their belt. I can't fault them their schedule. Who really would have thought going into the season that ND or (especially) Villanova would be down as much as they are? Not many. I will say this about KU's much "tougher" schedule than that of Mizzou: Where is KU's quality road win? I can't find one...

I beg to disagree and I am an aztec fan.  Yes the Aztecs were up on Creighton by 15, and yes once Tim Shelton was hurt the Aztecs lost their lead. The fact of the matter is Creighton came into our house and did something that has not happened in a while. They beat us.  You have to respect them for that.  I know we could have won that game with a lucky bounce or two. Then again UNLV could have beat us with a lucky bounce or two as well.
I won't argue about Baylor either. The aztecs played them closer then I thought they would and that was after being tired because they were playing 3 games in the 4 days before the Baylor game.
I will say this. I am very proud of the Aztecs and their wins at New Mexico and Wyoming. I still expect them to lose at UNLV and maybe one more loss on the road.  Considering where we thought we would be this year, I am elated.  So I am sure not going to insult Creighton for coming into our house and beating us.

I'll give you two good reasons why he would rank Kansas ahead of Missouri. 1 Kansas has beaten 3 teams currently ranked in the AP top ten. Ohio State, Baylor, and Georgetown. Not too many teams can say that. 2 If you have watched the Big 12 for the past 8 years, you would have to be skeptical that any team in the Big 12 is better than Kansas, until they actually beat them. Year after year, Baylor, or Texas, or Missouri, or Kansas State, or Oklahoma, think they are better than Kansas, or at least look better on paper, but Kansas always ends up on top. I think this could be the year KU gets knocked off though, cuz after Robinson, Withey, and Taylor, they got nothin. However, they are already twice as good as I expected them to be.

Had to repost that one...had to!

Wow ranman, if you actually had a clue you might be dangerous but right now you are just pathetic.  Mizzery has played the weakest of any of the top 10 teams.  Syracuse would make the K-State spanking of your boys look like our game against texas tech.  You need to put away your crack pipe and look at the reality at hand.  Kansas OWNS Mizzery in hoops, unless you consider a 77 game deficit on your part to be anything other than being owned.  As for your guard play, Kansas' defense will smother your shallow bench with no problem.  By your numerical logic, since the bears hit their "meaningless three at the buzzer" that means you escaped with a 4 point win.  Boy that makes it sound soooo much more impressive.  Sorry I confused you with numbers, I should have put it into terms a mizzery grad could understand.  Try this on for size.  YOU HAVE PLAYED NO ONE OF CONSEQUENCE THE ENTIRE SEASON!  That is why your team, and your fans get no respect.
