Maryland will name its Comcast Center court after legendary head coach Gary Williams tonight against Duke. (US Presswire)

By Jeff Borzello

On Wednesday night, Maryland will name the Comcast Center court after former head coach Gary Williams. He is the school’s all-time winningest men’s basketball coach and led the Terrapins to their only national championship in basketball.

It should be a great atmosphere and a great moment for everyone associated with the program.

Except former head coach Lefty Driesell, who doesn’t think any one coach should have his name on the court.

“It’s not fair to my players that they would put Gary Williams’ name on the court,” Driesell told The Baltimore Sun. “It’s a disservice to players such as Tom McMillen, John Lucas, Len Elmore, Brad Davis, Greg Manning, Adrian Branch and Steve Sheppard.”

Driesell is second in school history in wins, but resigned after the death of Len Bias in 1986. He went to eight NCAA tournaments in his 17 years with the Terrapins, and also coached the 1974 team that didn’t go to the NCAA tournament but was widely considered one of the best teams that season.

During Williams’ 22 years at the helm, Maryland went to 14 NCAA tournaments – including 11 consecutive from 1994-2004. The Terrapins reached the Final Four twice under Williams, and made the Sweet 16 on seven separate occasions.

Despite its struggles over the past few seasons, Maryland was one of the best basketball programs in the country for much of Williams’ tenure. The Terrapins were a perennial contender, and became a consistent national player under Williams. According to many, the Comcast Center was built because of the attention Williams brought to the program.

Does Driesell deserve recognition of some kind? Likely – and the school is considering honoring him in some way.

But for the Comcast Center basketball court, it’s tough to argue with naming it after Williams.

"The ol' lefthander" not in his right mind...

Sorry, Lefty, but you don't have a leg to stand on.  In the entire history of Maryland basketball, they have won the NCAA Tournament once.  Williams was the coach.  They could name it after a great football coach, but they only have one true National Championship, under Jim Tatum in the 1950's.  That isn't good enough to get your name on the basketball arena.

Only a bitter old man would see naming the arena after Williams as an insult.  It's sad that it has come to that.  I was hoping "the ol' lefthander" would have a happier life in retirement.

Wms led the Terps to ONE, ONE NCAA title.  Let's see...Wooden, Coach K, Pat Summitt, Rupp: more than one each, I think.  I did not know that Purdue had named their court after Gene Keady (who now is on the St John's staff)...Keady had NO NCAA titles as did Norm Stewart @ Mizzou.  Is longevity, integrity, wins, titles, contending-or combinations thereof....the criteria.  Individual schools can do as they please but I think it's always going to be tenuous erecting statues and naming edifices in this manner.

Bad move by the Twerp big wigs. Lefty had some monster teams that got shafted by stupid NCAA rules when they were unable to compete in NCAA tournaments. I relly don't care that Gary Williams got a ring. I was there when Lefty was and his teams would have eaten Gary's for lunch. Of course that's just my personal opinion but I'm sticking with it. If they have to give a name to the stupid arena name it Driesell-Williams or Williams-Driesell.

Although I should say in Lefty's defense that Maryland got screwed in '74 by not getting an NCAA bid after losing a thriller to NC State in the ACC tournament final- this was Lefty's best team and the Terps were ranked 4th hat year.

If I recall correctly, wasn't Maryland ranked #1 and State ranked #3 at the ACC tournament time?  I agree that Lefty got hosed based on today's tournament rules.  Had he been given the same rules to participate in the NCAA tournament, there is no telling how many National Championships he would have won.  Lefty had some great teams in the '70's and '80's.  He was definitely more consistent than Williams was.

Don't be so bitter Lefty.
It is embarassing to behave that way lefthander.

There are two iconic coaches that made up the last 40 years of Maryland basketball.  No one denies that fact.
This is equivalent to George Gervin throwing a fit if my Spurs built a Tim Duncan statue.

Maryland loves Lefty.  He is a legend and not forgotten.
Had the tournament rules been diffrent, Lefty probably would have won at least one national title.  His teams were that good.

But the success of Gary Williams in the late 1990s and early 2000's directly led to the fundraising to build the new facility.
The University plans to honor Lefty as well.  They don't forget his contributions.

But this is the stadium that Gary Williams literally built with his financial successes at MD.

GO TERPS!

When Len Bias died Driesell told other players to cover up evidence. He left the program in disgrace. He should keep his mouth shut.
