Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

By Jeff Goodman

Maybe I'm nuts to think a college group could hang with an NBA team, but I'm not so sure.

Check out the Toronto Raptors starting unit last night against the Boston Celtics -- and tell me you wouldn't take John Calipari's first five over the Raptors.

Not just for the future, but maybe even right now.

The Raptors backcourt was Spanish point guard Jose Calderon and athletic freak DeMar DeRozan. The frontcourt: James Johnson, Ed Davis and Aaron Gray.

Pitiful.

I understand Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist are just freshmen, but it's not like Davis and DeRozan are grown men, either. Both are just 22 years old. Johnson is 24 and Gray is 26.

I'd take Davis over Gray in a heartbeat. Yes, today. I'd also go with Gilchrist over Davis -- today, tomorrow and every day thereafter.

Calderon blows away Marquis Teague at this juncture and we'll give a slight nod to Johnson over Terrence "Mr. Enigma" Jones, but not if Jones' head is actually into the game.

Then there's the matter of DeRozan vs. Doron Lamb. DeRozan is a terrific athlete and virtually a non-shooter. Lamb is a big-time shooter. Completely different players, but I'll go with DeRozan.

So maybe Calipari's current edition down in Lexington wouldn't come out on top against the Raptors, but they'd certainly give them a run for their money.

Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

I love how people who have never paid attention to actual basketball think that a college team is incapable of beating pro teams.  In fact I've seen college all-star teams, and that's what UK is, beat established pro teams several times.  You might think it's impossible but the truth is youth and endurance give younger players a big edge over pro players who aren't used to going full speed for an entire game.  Keep in mind that pro teams go with their second unit for huge parts of their games.

I'm not saying UK would win this game every time but to think it couldn't happen is to display ignorance of the state of the game of basketball.  I've seen it happen.  In fact just recently the Div. II Rollins Tars beat a group of Orlando Magic players in a scrimmage game just recently.  You guys don't have a clue what you're talking about.

Agreed.  This is ridiculous - go find something newsworthy to write about.  Besides, why pick o the raptors when there are four other teams in the NBA who currently have worst records.

About the only thing equal between these two teams might be what the players are paid !

This is laughable.  This is the kind of rubbish that gets the loonies on their rants about Alabama beating a professional football team.  Total nonsense.  Your parents will be wearing bags over their heads to hide their shame to hide the fact they are known to be associated with such mind bogglingly stupid conjecture.

Give me Toronto and I'll spot UK 30 points, and Toronto would still win by 10. I'm so sick of hearing about how good COLLEGE teams are. Just like LSU or Alabama would get absolutely killed by the worst NFL team, Kentucky couldn't even stay on the same floor with the worst NBA team for the same reason. The worst NBA team is FULL of 1st and 2nd round picks, even on the end of the bench. Enough already.

I think it's funny how people on here are saying that they're not convinced UK is no the best team in college basketball. Have u seen this team!? Name me 3 better teams.

Learn how to read, people. He is saying he would compare the starting units of each team. In my opinion, UK beats the Raptors top 6 players, not just five. UK's 6th man, Miller, would start at any other school.

I didnt realize this quesiton even came up. More over I didnt think a writer would have the "go-naads" to even print it. UK is good, I mean very very good, howeveer, no college team in any sport would beat a professional team ever.

"not an easy call"?, yes it is...not that I believe it, but even if you accept that UK's starting 5 is better, what about the bench players? The Raptors might suck, but I see some pretty good players on their bench. In fact, I suspect the Raptors bench could easily beat UK's starting 5...No way Kentucky, or any other college team, could hang with any NBA team...

Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

Every year these dumb "could this college team beat this pro team" questions arise.  the answer is always  NO!!!  Worst pro team still STOMPS best college team, in almost every sport.  Give it up.
