Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

By Jeff Goodman

Maybe I'm nuts to think a college group could hang with an NBA team, but I'm not so sure.

Check out the Toronto Raptors starting unit last night against the Boston Celtics -- and tell me you wouldn't take John Calipari's first five over the Raptors.

Not just for the future, but maybe even right now.

The Raptors backcourt was Spanish point guard Jose Calderon and athletic freak DeMar DeRozan. The frontcourt: James Johnson, Ed Davis and Aaron Gray.

Pitiful.

I understand Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist are just freshmen, but it's not like Davis and DeRozan are grown men, either. Both are just 22 years old. Johnson is 24 and Gray is 26.

I'd take Davis over Gray in a heartbeat. Yes, today. I'd also go with Gilchrist over Davis -- today, tomorrow and every day thereafter.

Calderon blows away Marquis Teague at this juncture and we'll give a slight nod to Johnson over Terrence "Mr. Enigma" Jones, but not if Jones' head is actually into the game.

Then there's the matter of DeRozan vs. Doron Lamb. DeRozan is a terrific athlete and virtually a non-shooter. Lamb is a big-time shooter. Completely different players, but I'll go with DeRozan.

So maybe Calipari's current edition down in Lexington wouldn't come out on top against the Raptors, but they'd certainly give them a run for their money.

Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

I agree that some college teams had NBA ready players in college. But most great NCAA stars do not amount to anything in the pros and are what you would call "overrated"

I am as big a Tar Heels fan as they come but I do not think some of the best Tar Heels teams would beat an NBA team because the role players on the teams would get owned by the NBA players. For example:

2005 or 2009 Tar Heels were incredibly deep NCAA teams and both probably in the top 10 best college teams of all time due to depth and how they played in the NCAA tournament. Look at their stars and what they became in the pros.

Sean May, Rashad McCants, Jawad Williams, all either bench warmers or not playing.

Wayne Ellington, Danny Green, Deon Thompson, Ed Davis, all key players in that title and all bench or nobodys in the pros.

Hansbrough, Felton, Lawson, Marvin Williams all play key roles in their teams but none are NBA all stars.

Christian Laetner and Bobby Hurley two of the best NCAA players ever and really were garbage in the NBA. 1991 and 1992 Duke were incredible sad to admit and they really did not translage into good NBA talent.  It's another level and in no way is Kentucky of this year as good as any of the 4 teams I just mentioned. Those young kids would get absolutely punked by those 2 UNC and Duke teams I just discussed.

Toronto would win as would any other NBA team in the league. Charolotte would even win.

Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

I have to say I am not convenced it is that stupid. The part where you lost me is when you brought in football. Football is way different than basketball. I do not believe there will ever be a college football team that could come close to beating a pro team. Agreed for all the reasons you gave. Even the worst player made it to the pro level on the proteam but the worst players even for the starts wont play pro ball. OK this point still holds with basketball the difference is you really only need 5 guys. I remember the UNLV team back in 1990 that was rediculous. That team had pro players 3 who were allstars picked in the first round of the draft, no NBA team has 3 Allstars. When you watched them they played like a proteam. the averaged winning by over 17 points a game. They won the NCAA championship over Duke 103-73 which is a record. That is what was so crazy when Duke beat that team the second year. Getting 5 players who are rediclous to come to your college is not out of the question and its the only sport that you can get away with that. Look at the a couple teams from the past.

UNC has had some amazing teams, look at the Jordan teams as well.

Now would UK actually beat the Raptors, who knows, although you look at some of our Olympic teams and you would think we would never lose there either, so why cant UK beat the Raptors? That is a really good team. I would put my money on the Raptors but I think it would be a very close game and would not be shocked at all if UK won.

I don't know about this Kentucky team...but Coach Cals Memphis team of 08 or the Jayhawks of 08 could make a game of it, likely win.

Toronto would win in a low scoring game.

Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

You could put the best college team in football or basketball ever against the worst NBA or NFL team ever and they would not beat the professional team.  Why is that? BECAUSE THE PROFESSIONAL TEAMS ARE PROFESSIONALS! Bench players on pro teams were studs in college. Major busts in pro sports were some of the greatest NCAA players ever.  It was like in 2001 when they said the Miami Hurricanes could beat the Cleveland Browns.  Not a chance.  Doesn't matter the team or the era the answer is no.

Foolish.
You do not deserve a job covering any sport.
You exhibit absolutely no understanding of the level of play on the professional level.

Here's an idea for your next ridiculous article:

"Could Alabama beat any team in the NFL ?"

I will give you a hint: NO!

Give me a break.... Kentucky has had so many close games this year! I think there are 5 teams better than Kentucky this year in college. Toronto could play Kentucky 100 times and win ALL 100 times! Its ridiculous to think that a college team could beat a pro basketball team. No Way, No How!

Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

Kentucky hasn't even proven it is the best team in college basketball yet...struggling against the likes of Auburn...and this clown has them hanging with an NBA team?  <span style="color: #000000;">

I've gotten used to CBSSports.com getting on its collective knees and blowing UK basketball every chance it gets but this is a whole new level of absurd.
