Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

By Jeff Goodman

Maybe I'm nuts to think a college group could hang with an NBA team, but I'm not so sure.

Check out the Toronto Raptors starting unit last night against the Boston Celtics -- and tell me you wouldn't take John Calipari's first five over the Raptors.

Not just for the future, but maybe even right now.

The Raptors backcourt was Spanish point guard Jose Calderon and athletic freak DeMar DeRozan. The frontcourt: James Johnson, Ed Davis and Aaron Gray.

I understand Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist are just freshmen, but it's not like Davis and DeRozan are grown men, either. Both are just 22 years old. Johnson is 24 and Gray is 26.

I'd take Davis over Gray in a heartbeat. Yes, today. I'd also go with Gilchrist over Davis -- today, tomorrow and every day thereafter.

Calderon blows away Marquis Teague at this juncture and we'll give a slight nod to Johnson over Terrence "Mr. Enigma" Jones, but not if Jones' head is actually into the game.

Then there's the matter of DeRozan vs. Doron Lamb. DeRozan is a terrific athlete and virtually a non-shooter. Lamb is a big-time shooter. Completely different players, but I'll go with DeRozan.

So maybe Calipari's current edition down in Lexington wouldn't come out on top against the Raptors, but they'd certainly give them a run for their money.

Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

This is without a doubt one of the worst "columns" I have ever read. This comparison is akin to someone in their highschool paper writing that the grade 8 girls team could beat the senior girls. Ridiculous. I agree that this is an unnecessary hacking of the lone Canadian team as well. Why not choose Detroit or Charlotte? When the Raps are healthy they can compete with most teams in the association. The just beat Phoenix and Utah on back-to-back nights on the road. Don't pick on someone when they are down. If you have run out of good ideas for your column, better to just wave the white flag and not write one until something worth writing about lands on your desk.

Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

Wow this is really stupid. The Raptors, who aren't even the worst NBA team, would absolutely murder UK. The Raptors players were all college stars (except Calderon of course) and are all much better now. Gilchrist over Davis is completely out to lunch. This game would get ugly very quickly.

Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

This is nonsense. You will continue to see this kind of stuff from Jeff Goodman, Pat Forde, etc...they want to play up UK's talent to highest extent possible, so if they lose in the NCAA Tournament they can all pile on about how Calipari can't coach ("he's just a recruiter"...blah blah blah). Unfortunately for Jeff (and whoever else tries to do this), with each year that goes by, it's becoming more and more difficult to make that claim. Whether you like him or not, you have to admit that Calipari has done an outstanding job "coaching" all of three of his teams at UK (and he did an outstanding job coaching his last four Memphis teams before that). My question to anyone who disagrees is the following: If it's so easy to coach top-tier talent, why are Josh Pastner and Jim Calhoun (who we all know is an excellent coach with 3 national titles) having such a hard time this season? It's time to move on from the "he's just a recruiter" argument (I'm not even sure why it ever emerged given what this guy did at UMass, but whatever). Gotta love today's media guys- always trying to set up the next story. You're not fooling anyone, dude...

Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

I think it's pretty easy to call depending on the answer to one very important question. Who's rules do you use. If this is on an NBA court with NBA rules, UK wouldn't stand a chance. Could that team adjust to a wider lane, bigger 3 point line, and longer shot clock. Maybe, but not unless they spent all of their time working on it for months. Not to mention little changes like defensive 3 second calls. The court dimentions aren't even about the ability to shoot a longer shot, but be familiar with having to defend 3 feet farther out to play the same style of D.
SCMatt33 these are great points, and to elaborate on them further another factor to consider is the conditioning. NBA players are much better conditioned than college kids. It is rather routine for an NBA team to consistently play four games in a 7-day period. The only time college players play four games in a 7-day period is during conference tournament time and remember not all conferences have tournaments that preceed the NCAA tournament.

If you play college rules, maybe Kentucky would have a decent shot, but I still think the Raptors would win. The big issue is depth. Kentucky only really goes 7 deep, and I don't think they could go a whole game against an NBA team with that little depth.
I agree with you here as well and would take it a step further by saying that by the under 8 minute television timeout in the second half the Raptors would have taken Kentucky's best shot and then would begin to pull away.

As talented as Kentucky is no way do they beat the Raptors, nor does any elite college team beat a cellar dwelling NBA team. The NBA is a whole different world altogether which explains why throughout the years many superstar college players have found it very difficult transitioning to the NBA. It ain't easy.

Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

Too bad some billionaire couldn't conjure up a friendly little match up between the two. One advantage the N.B.A. team would have would be the extra minutes in a game the N.B.A. plays. Would those 48 minutes versus 40 minutes cause the Wildcats team to whither a little in the end? Also I guess that you are saying without saying it directly in the article that Kentucky is going to win it all and Toronto wont go on any kind of a winning streak and end up being the worse team in the N.B.A.

Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

All you Loserville fans, well, you just tickle me matthew.  I mean, you amuse me more than you could ever know.  I realize how disheartening it is to root for a team that, no matter what, is always second-best in terms of....well, this year, NOTHING.  Because Murray State could kick the Loserville Caanaries' ass all over the Yummy Center.  Ironinc that the sponsor of your little building there owns KFC....because the Cards have been fried birds quite a lot this year.  You get our recruit rejects, you get our coach reject.....and we just keep whipping your asses and winning games.  UK may not beat the Raptors...or they may.  But what I know for certain is the Cards would lose to half the high school in the city of Loserville.

This team has talent, but they beat Kansas Nov 15th and UNC Dec 3rd (lost to FSU by 30), who else have they beaten?  Same old song and dance, play nobody's until tournament time and get oh so close( been going on since 98)...Jeff quit feeding into the "delusionism"  which is UK basetball.  This team would get trounced by any NBA team, period!
