Anthony Grant suspends 3 more Alabama starters

Something pretty terrible must be happening inside the Alabama program. Days after starter Tony Mitchell was indefinitely suspended from the team, head coach Anthony Grant has now suspended JaMychal Green, Andrew Steele and Trevor Releford, the school announced Saturday afternoon. All three are starters.

What's more, the players were sent home from the team's road trip in Louisiana. Alabama plays against LSU at 7 p.m. ET Saturday night.

The news of the players suspended was first broken by Cecil Hurt of Tuscaloosa News, then confirmed soon thereafter by a school press release.

“We are extremely disappointed in the choices and decisions made by these young men that has led to this suspension,” Grant said in a release. “Talent is a gift, but character is a choice. The consequences of their choices have negatively impacted them as individuals and the people that love and support them. Our hope is that they will be mature enough to accept responsibility for their actions and place a higher value on their character.”

Grant's actions are perhaps unprecedented. Alabama is a 16-7 (5-4 SEC) team that's not assured of an NCAA tournament berth. It now goes without its four best players. Can you remember a college basketball coach in contention for the NCAAs that had to suspended this many starters? If it's something this drastic, the players involved had to know what was coming. Mitchell was the first signal, and now five days later it's this.

The Tide is a mess, and unless Grant's message is received and obeyed, Alabama could be chancing missing the NCAA tournament despite clearly having talent worthy of playing games that matter in March.

UConn could probably learn a thing or 2 from this. Change their win at any costs attitude (then try to plea bargain when things don't go as planned). Good to see someone take the road less traveled for a change.

I applaud Anthony Grant for his balls. This really is unprecedented and shows character of the upmost values to do something like this with so much on the line. He was a candidate I had hoped the Terps looked when Gary retired and think he is an excellent coach.

Hey Bama 75201,

I agree with you 100%. However, I have not followed Grant since he left VCU. I will say he was a very good coach at VCU and build a good program. I hope his actions are supported by fact once the reason for the suspensions comes out. I also hope other coaches have the "character" needed to do what it take to hold their players to a high standard. Too many coaches will skirt the rules so their team will win. Holding the players accountable will benefit them later in life. After all colleges are institutes of higher learning. It doesn't stop on the field or court where athletic events are held.

Including your sleazy coach who is going to get UK a death penalty before the decade is over.

Anthony Grant is a fine coach and very fine person.  He will not tolerate any behavior that he believes will reflect badly on the university.  Some of the comments on here by Alabama supporters claiming these are the actions of a desperate coach who may lose his job are out of line.  He will not compromise his principals.  Y'all should be supporting him, not attacking him.  You need to get away from winning at any cost and realize that it is also important HOW you play the game and conduct yourself.

I  applaud Grant for doing what needed to be done. It was obvious that something was going on with this team - besides being underachievers. So what if this season is lost if it means more disciplined players in the future.

And you are someone who apparently knows nothing. If they broke NCAA rules by all means suspend them. Kick them out of school if you want. If that's not it then exactly what did they do that was so horrible?
