Creighton shoots poorly again, loses again

"It was all good just a week ago." -- Kanye West (and, presumably, Greg McDermott)

When we woke up last Saturday Creighton was 21-2 overall, 11-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference and alone atop the league standings. The Bluejays were going H.A.M. They were ranked 13th in the AP poll. Doug McDermott was a National Player of the Year candidate. It was all good.

But now?

Now it's remarkably bad.

The Bluejays lost their third straight Saturday.

This loss came by 21 points.

This loss came at home.

So now Creighton is 21-5 overall, 11-4 in the MVC and on its way to a second-place finish behind Wichita State, the school that delivered Saturday's 89-68 beatdown in Omaha. Barring too many stupid voters, the Bluejays will be unranked in both the AP and Coaches polls Monday. If not, you know what'll happen. But I really can't believe this has happened. It's the result of not making shots.

Creighton is statistically one of the nation's best 3-point shooting teams.

Or perhaps I should say was.

When we woke up last Saturday the Bluejays were shooting 45.3 percent from beyond the arc, which ranked first nationally. Then they went 5-of-16 from 3-point range in a loss to Northern Iowa, 4-of-22 from 3-point range in a loss to Evansville and 5-of-23 from 3-point range in a loss to Wichita State. Translation: Creighton is 0-3 in its past three outings while shooting 22.9 percent from beyond the arc.

That's the obvious reason for the decline.

It was all good just a week ago.

Now, not so much.

Creighton shoots poorly again, loses again

Live by the three (3), die by the three. Indiana started down that path after dispatching Penn State with a barrage of three pointers. Indiana is still a pretty good three point shooting team but when they returned to more inside-out play toward the basket and charging up their defense they have returned to their winning ways. No team out there is good enough to rely on three point shooting forever. When you do you end up like Creighton. I expect they will regroup and get going again. They just learned an expensive lesson though.. as most teams do.

Man you are sour.  Creighton got worked over, it's that simple.  Move on.  I can assure you we have.  Until we meet again in the MVC Tourney right?

I particulary like your generalization of Creighton academic standards to WSU's.  I graduated from WSU, now I have an 800 plus credit rating, make six figures a year, pay my taxes and contribute to society.  I think my WSU education has done okay for me.

If you were truly a Creighton grad, I figured you would realize college is all about effort and attitude.  Apply yourself in school and you will get out of it as much as you put into it.  Plain and simple.

Even if the Jays had made 6 more 3 point shots they still would have lost agains the Shockers.  The Shockers played great against the Jays.

The Jays are an excellent basketball team, I just think WSU is a little better.

It wasn't like the game was picnic for WSU, even though they won by 21.  The Shockers leading player, Garrett Stutz was in foul trouble the whole game and only played 13 minutes, scoring 8 points and getting 1 rebound.  The Shockers other inside big guy, Carl Hall also was in foul trouble also finishing the game with 4 fouls and sitting on the bench a lot.

The Shocks found a way to win anyway.  Beating a very good Jays team in Omaha in front of 18,700+ fans (about 18,000 of which were for Creighton).

The Shockers deserve a lot of credit for winning this game, and should be ranked much higher in the poll.

Creighton shoots poorly again, loses again

I know Creighton fans who have went to games at Koch and the fans there are anything but respectful. Marshall is a whiner when he loses (refs always against him) and talks smack when he wins. I stand by my comments and could care less what you think.

I gave the Shockers credit for being the better team yesterday. What more do you want? I will also match any Creighton player in the classroom against anyone at Wichita State.   I hope they play again as well.

Wow, way to keep it classy CUJAYS87. First of all, you know nothing about Marshall and your perception of him being a "jag off" and/or cocky couldn't be further from the truth. Furthermore, I go to class with several of the starters and once again you are completely wrong about them attending class. Wichita State fans, coaches and players have shown nothing but respect for your program all year, I'm not sure where you're getting your information, but your misdirected anger makes you look foolish. The Shocks simply outplayed your team and I for one hope they meet again in the tournament to show everyone the better team.

I never said it was an upset. Marshall is a jag off and has a big mouth. He fits right in at a program where going to class is an option.

1 the shockers didn't double McDermott very often, and 2 be careful what you wish for the shocker are head and shoulders better than Creighton.

as for Greg Marshall, he isn't cocky just fed up of hearing about inferior teams.. THIS GAME WAS NOT AN UPSET

Basketball is about putting the ball in the basket. Creighton has had good looks the past three games. The problem is they are not making them.

This makes it easier for teams to double and even triple McDermott. He is a very good player, but not good enough to beat coverages like that. The Jays also need to get tougher on the defensive end. They let the Shockers get any shot they wanted.

I hope they get another shot at Wichita State. I respect their ability, but I never liked that program and I don't like their cocky coach.
