OSU's Ross latest to go off on Twitter, apologize

By Gary Parrish

LaQuinton Ross deleted the Tweet and apologized pretty quickly.

But by then, as is almost always the case in this fast-paced world, the damage was done.

"Don't know how much longer I can take this BULL----!!!!!" Ross Tweeted, and I think it's reasonable to assume "this BULL----" was in reference to the fact that Ohio State coach Thad Matta didn't play Ross Tuesday night for the fifth straight game. Elite recruits don't like sitting the bench, you know? But Ross' comments are also interesting in a larger scope, because they come just a few days after Maryland guard Terrell Stoglin Tweeted his displeasure with Mark Turgeon's decision to bench him in crucial minutes.

I don't care whether Matta and Turgeon are right or wrong.

That's not the point.

The point is that athletes must learn, sooner or later, that Tweeting something in the year 2012 is no different than saying something into a microphone held by Clark Kellogg. It's all for public consumption. I hear your thoughts when you say them live on CBS. I read your thoughts when you Tweet them to your followers -- if only because your followers RT them and those thoughts find me somehow, in this case via an email from our Ohio State Rapid Reporter.

Bottom line, don't be stupid.

If you're an athlete at a high-profile school -- you know, like Ohio State, which just so happens to be ranked sixth nationally -- you need to ask yourself one question before Tweeting anything: Would I say these words into a microphone with a television camera in my face? If the answer is a negative, don't hit "send." Because if you do, you'll look silly. And then you're just gonna end up deleting the Tweet and subsequently apologizing, at which point you'll look even sillier than you did before.

OSU's Ross latest to go off on Twitter, apologize

I'm pretty confident that if my college football career hadn't been 20 years ago, I would've been a poster boy for this sort of idiotic behavior - especially after a night of 20 or so beers and shots. And I'm not even going to guess how many ridiculous YouTube videos my moronic actions would've sponsored as well. My point is that being a college athlete today has entirely too much risk AND reward at stake. The good and the bad both need to be discounted greatly as 18-22 year olds simply shouldn't be held in this high esteem or disdain.

RickyG131, you sir, are a moron.  If you could read, I said the Buckeyes were "one of, if not the best" defensive teams.  Obviously, that leaves room for your precious wildcats.  They certainly are one of the top defensive teams as well.  But maybe check the stats again because while UK is a long defensive team and gets a lot of blocked shots, Ohio State is tanacious and quick and leads the nation in defensive efficiency and points per possession (even ahead of your wildcats).  So while I conced that both teams play good defense, you are the only one who looks stupid for insinuating the buckeyes aren't in the conversation for the best defense in the land.  You can keep your blocked shots, and I'll take the buckeyes' fewer points per possession any day of the week.  Either way, my comment that the buckeyes are a defensive team and that Ross will have to play defense to get floor time still stands.  But since you clearly cannot read, I wouldn't expect you to be able to extract the point of my post.

I think Matta's got a pretty good handle on who he wants starting & sitting so Ross needs to cool his jets and prepare himself for any opportunity that may come his way. Tweeting your frustrations isn't going to help in ANY way. Hey Ross, here's a thought... why not stop by the coach's office and have a man-to-man conversation? Ross is a tremendous talent so I hope  this doesn't bite him in the *** any more than it has.

Just another case of entitlement. I was a top prospect, you owe me. Wonder if Thad promised anything.

Maybe if he had the grades back in fall quarter he would have been getting more playing time but he has only been with the team a few shots, and while I hear he is improving at practice I also hear is is still miles behind the rest of the team and it shows when he plays.

These athletes need to be educated on how the internet works. Its a living thing. Once its out there its out there for everyone to see. Hey I realize its a new generation with amazing technology available that makes what I had in college in the late 80s/early 90s seem like cave drawings. Back then ESPN was still young and the best way to get sports news was in the newspapers. The people who had the sports info were reporters for the most part. Now with Twitter and 24hr Sportscenter anyone can get updated info any time they want it. Not only are there news reporters but media outlets are paying people to monitor the Twitter-verse 24/7. Its become THE place to get sports rumors. gossip, and even injury updates. Still, the modern athlete needs to be more careful what he/she says on Twitter. Anything can be misconstrued. Any anger or outrage expressed in a Tweet toward someone will find its way to that individual in no time. There is nowhere to hide anymore. If you are willing to take all responsibility for what you say on Twitter and be ready for any blowback then fine, continue to use it. Otherwise just call a friend and bitch to them or go have a beer or two with friends to vent it out.

OSU's Ross latest to go HAM on Twitter, apologize

Ross is supposed to be the Buckeyes 3 point specialist of the future but now it looks like the kid may have dug a bigger hole than he was already in.  Maybe if he did have the grades to be eligible at the beginning of the season then he would be getting some playing time rather than Sam Thompson but he came in late which means he is still behind everyone else on the bench.  Matta doesn't use his bench players much anyways so this kid should have known the odds of him seeing the court this year would be slim.

This is a bonehead move by Ross but he is a blue chip prospect so hopefully he can work hard and gain some trust from Matta.  OSU has no recruits for next years class so if Ross continues to be selfish and decides to transfer it could hurt the Bucks depth next year.

Ohio St. is pretty good on defense but they ARE NOT EVEN CLOSE to kentucky defensively. I mean cmon 34% fg % for opponents on the year. Leading shot blocking team in the nation...need i say more, you just look stupid to say they may be the best defensive team in the nation because they arent even close to UK
