When D.J. Byrd was arrested for public intoxication, it was expected that the junior wing would be suspended for Sunday's game against Michigan State. Nothing more than that.

What wasn't anticipated was that teammate Kelsey Barlow would be kicked off the team.

“This is an unfortunate situation, but we will move forward as a program,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “We expect our student-athletes to live up to a high standard, and when their actions become detrimental to the program, there are consequences.”

According to a source, the story goes like this: Barlow left his wallet in a bar last night and couldn't get back into the establishment. He rounded up a few of his buddies -- Byrd included -- and they went back to the bar. There was apparently a verbal exchange and Byrd wound up getting arrested while sticking up for his teammate. He was booked into jail at 3:35 a.m. and released at 8:31 a.m.

Barlow was under a zero tolerance policy with Painter for several issues in the past -- including one last season that resulted in a suspension from the NCAA tournament.

The timing couldn't be any worse with Purdue hosting No. 8 Michigan State on Sunday and now being without two starters. The Boilermakers have won two straight and are 17-9 overall and 7-6 in Big Ten play. However, they can ill-afford to slip-up with five regular-season games remaining in order to secure an NCAA tournament bid.

Byrd has been terrific over the past five games, averaging nearly 17 points per game and making 18-of-34 from beyond the arc. He was 7-of-9 from deep in a close lose in Columbus to Ohio State and finished with 13 points and was 3-of-6 from beyond the arc in the win over the Illini earlier this week.

Barlow (8.3 ppg) has been erratic throughout his career, an underachiever of sorts who was suspended for the NCAA tournament a year ago.

Oh, joy! Now Sparty will beat Purdue by 14 points instead of 6. I wonder if Matt Painter will yell at our players this time??

Point being missed here, sadly.

Good to see that Coach Painter has taken action from the Bobby Knight handbook on personal responsibility. These Kids are taken out of some rough environments and placed into a Collage setting and are instructed over and over again as to their actions and the light they cast on their universities. if things work out well for the two of them they'll hook up with a J C to salvage their careers, once they hit the NBA level they can screw up as much as they would like too without consequence.

I have mixed emotions on some of these things,  First I compliment Painter for the tough stance, it is no doubt needed.  That said, I think that kids doing some drinking and partying in college is to be expected, I hate to see them treated differently from other students, but they are getting the free ride to represent the school.  Finally, as far as this kid leaving his wallet, have some common sense, leave it, check on it the day.  If it is gone, cancel the cards and get a new ID.  Think, be smarter than the wallet.

The integrity of the program must come first. When the Spartans had off court issues with Allen and Lucious, Tom Izzo had to do what was best for the team and boot them both. The distractions made for a rough season last year but ultimately strengthened the team. Matt Painter impresses me as a solid guy who will do what's best for his kids, even if that means dismissing them.

An alcoholic can always seek help...that is a personal decision aned must be made by the individual.  A collegiate program must maintain its rules and behavior standards.  It is not a rehab program.  After so many mess ups, a player has to go or the program will suffer.  The player can get help, it he wants to get help.  Support can come from the school, but he has blown his chances to remain on the team.

It wouldn't be Purdue that's destroying his life. His family needs to help him or he needs to help himself. You'd think the structure of being a student athlete should be enough, as well as a full ride. Purdue isn't at fault in any way.

I'M AN I.U. FAN THAT HATES TO LOSE TO PURDUE, BUT I HAVE ALWAYS RESPECTED KEADY AND PAINTER FOR THE WAY THEY HANDLE THE PROGRAM. IT SOUNDS LIKE PAINTER IS HANDLING THIS CORRECTLY. NO COACH BOOTS A PLAYER THAT CAN HELP HIM WIN, WITHOUT NUMEROUS WARNINGS AND WITHOUT PUTTING UP WITH MORE THAN HE SHOULD. THIS WAS PROBABLY THE LAST STRAW. PURDUE FANS SHOULD RESPECT WHAT PAINTER IS DOING AND GIVE HIM EXTRA SUPPORT FOR THE MSU GAME. REMEMBER, NO PROGRAM IN INDIANA WANTS TO DEVELOP A REPUTATION LIKE OUR NEIGHBOR DIRECTLY TO THE SOUTH. IN THE LONG RUN, THIS WILL MAKE THE BASKETBALL PROGRAM BETTER. LOOKING THE OTHER WAY WHEN THERE ARE DISCIPLINE PROBLEMS NEVER BENEFITS THE TEAM OR THE INDIVIDUALS.

Could be a tragedy in the making. Sounds like Barlow, givemn his history, may be an alcoholic. Will Purdue help him or cut him loose to destry his life. Sad
