Purdue boots Kelsey Barlow, suspends D.J. Byrd

When D.J. Byrd was arrested for public intoxication, it was expected that the junior wing would be suspended for Sunday's game against Michigan State. Nothing more than that.

What wasn't anticipated was that teammate Kelsey Barlow would be kicked off the team.

“This is an unfortunate situation, but we will move forward as a program,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “We expect our student-athletes to live up to a high standard, and when their actions become detrimental to the program, there are consequences.”

According to a source, the story goes like this: Barlow left his wallet in a bar last night and couldn't get back into the establishment. He rounded up a few of his buddies -- Byrd included -- and they went back to the bar. There was apparently a verbal exchange and Byrd wound up getting arrested while sticking up for his teammate. He was booked into jail at 3:35 a.m. and released at 8:31 a.m.

Barlow was under a zero tolerance policy with Painter for several issues in the past -- including one last season that resulted in a suspension from the NCAA tournament.

The timing couldn't be any worse with Purdue hosting No. 8 Michigan State on Sunday and now being without two starters. The Boilermakers have won two straight and are 17-9 overall and 7-6 in Big Ten play. However, they can ill-afford to slip-up with five regular-season games remaining in order to secure an NCAA tournament bid.

Byrd has been terrific over the past five games, averaging nearly 17 points per game and making 18-of-34 from beyond the arc. He was 7-of-9 from deep in a close lose in Columbus to Ohio State and finished with 13 points and was 3-of-6 from beyond the arc in the win over the Illini earlier this week.

Barlow (8.3 ppg) has been erratic throughout his career, an underachiever of sorts who was suspended for the NCAA tournament a year ago.

I have always been amused at people who "leave their wallet" in the bar. Whatever happened to putting it in your pocket?

I understand the Barlow dismissal, but these are college kids having fun. Who on here hasn't done any underage drinking before, or something stupid. I think the suspension is warranted but thats were it should end.

WHAT?   Sure, we had fun, but we weren't getting the scholarships these kids get.  If they want to have the fun others have, don't play basketball and pay your own tuition

Appears you are wrong!  Painter handled this great ----- and while I think it will be extremely tough to beat MSU this weekend without Byrd (and Barlow), It is great to see that he puts integrity and respect of team/university above getting a W!  Not sure that Purdue still won't squeak out a victory either on Sunday afternoon - but will be tough.

Byrd and Barlow are both 21.  Byrd turned 21 in November, and Barlow just turned 21 on Valentine's Day (which is probably what he was out celebrating).

But Barlow's history of having a nose for trouble made this pretty predictable, actually.  I think Painter's sending the right message here, even if it does cost us in terms of wins/selection/etc.  It's a shame, but you can only put up with so many poor and impulsive decisions.  Some people have to learn the hard way.

Losing Byrd for a couple of games hurts a lot on the court.  Barlow... well, he's like the Rex Grossman of basketball.  You never really know whether he's going to give you 12 points or 12 turnovers.  I think they have plenty of young guys who can step into Barlow's position without losing much.

Knucklehead was told to get his act together after several screw ups.  He didn't listen and then he tries to pull a teammate down with him.  My respect for Painter just went up a notch.  I am glad he booted the kid.  Maybe his discipline where noone else cares enough to, will save the kid.  Who knows.  Too bad.  Consequences for your actions.

I don't believe Barlow or Byrd are 21 yet, so why were they allowed to drink off campus?

Barlow needs to check into AA or get started on Antabuse.  That thug has head issues and he should have never been offered a scholarship to Purdue.  He's lucky he isn't serving time in prison.  On his own, he will finally get arrested and will have to serve time, if he doesn't wind up face down in a ditch or floating down the Wabash.

DJ Byrd is just a dumbarse.  He should know better.  He knows that Barlow is radioactive and getting near Barlow would only give him Kryptonite.  These guys can be so immature at times.  Just go to class, study, practice and go home.  Idle time is the devil's playground and if they chose to behave like criminals instead of hardworking students, they should go away.  Far away.

Were these guys drunk?  Did they not understand Law 101? Both?  If they are taking classes, practicing, studying, playing ball...they probably should be suspended for being out in the middle of the night.  I am impressed with their stamina which evidently allowed them to stay stupider longer.  Good for you boys, the alums know they are getting their money's worth in the scholarship they are paying for.

Barlow has always brought that PU team down. Painter handed this well, but with this game against MSU, and roadies at IU and Mich ahead, I think Barlow just ruined Purdue's tournament shot. Gonna be hard for them to pick up any sort of a quality win that their schedule lacks. The only player I feel bad for is Hummel. Sucks to see thug players bring down a classy player in his final season. Oh well, I know we can't wait for Purdue to come to Assembly Hall this season. We might have some fun with DJ then.
