Purdue boots Kelsey Barlow, suspends D.J. Byrd

When D.J. Byrd was arrested for public intoxication, it was expected that the junior wing would be suspended for Sunday's game against Michigan State. Nothing more than that.

What wasn't anticipated was that teammate Kelsey Barlow would be kicked off the team.

“This is an unfortunate situation, but we will move forward as a program,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “We expect our student-athletes to live up to a high standard, and when their actions become detrimental to the program, there are consequences.”

According to a source, the story goes like this: Barlow left his wallet in a bar last night and couldn't get back into the establishment. He rounded up a few of his buddies -- Byrd included -- and they went back to the bar. There was apparently a verbal exchange and Byrd wound up getting arrested while sticking up for his teammate. He was booked into jail at 3:35 a.m. and released at 8:31 a.m.

Barlow was under a zero tolerance policy with Painter for several issues in the past -- including one last season that resulted in a suspension from the NCAA tournament.

The timing couldn't be any worse with Purdue hosting No. 8 Michigan State on Sunday and now being without two starters. The Boilermakers have won two straight and are 17-9 overall and 7-6 in Big Ten play. However, they can ill-afford to slip-up with five regular-season games remaining in order to secure an NCAA tournament bid.

Byrd has been terrific over the past five games, averaging nearly 17 points per game and making 18-of-34 from beyond the arc. He was 7-of-9 from deep in a close lose in Columbus to Ohio State and finished with 13 points and was 3-of-6 from beyond the arc in the win over the Illini earlier this week.

Barlow (8.3 ppg) has been erratic throughout his career, an underachiever of sorts who was suspended for the NCAA tournament a year ago.

Purdue's Byrd arrested for public intoxication

Interesting point.  If it is true, the Spartans may have helped themeslves at Purdue by playing good defense against WI.

That said, Painter hates MSU and I doubt he will not ley Byrd play.  I think that he should get a one game suspension to set an example for the rest of the team, but Painter needs this win and that is what will rule the day.  The only way he doesn't play is if the BigTen steps in and does it.  Purdue will not do it on their own.  Wait and see.

Purdue's Byrd arrested for public intoxication

The Where Else Bar? Come on. Wasn't the Dew Drop Inn not open? I hear The Whiz Out Back is a nice place. My favorite has always been the Duke in Puke on Stadium Drive. The athletes prefer the Blitzed Boiler on Ladies night where every Purdue coed receives a complimentary pat down after 10:00 P.M. For the late night crowd, Ralph's Remains is THE place to be seen.

Purdue's Byrd arrested for public intoxication

I know it's Byrd that got busted, but it's Barlow's involvement that would have me most concerned if I were Painter.  There were a number of issues last year (including a significant suspension).  He seems to be a guy with a nose for trouble.  That doesn't exonerate Byrd, of course... but I'd be taking a long hard look at Barlow's situation all the same.

Purdue's Byrd arrested for public intoxication

Purdue's Byrd
arrested for public
intoxication

The arrest of Purdue University basketball
standout David Jonathan "D.J" Byrd
stemmed from a disturbance at Where Else
Bar involving teammate Kelsey Barlow,
police confirmed this afternoon.

Lt. Gary Sparger of the West Lafayette
Police Department said Barlow had been at
Where Else, 304 W. State St., and either left
or got kicked out of the business.

Barlow then came back, believing he left
his wallet there. Where Else, however,
refused to let him back in.

Sparger said Barlow left and returned later
accompanied by Byrd and other
unidentified members of Purdue's
basketball team.

This resulted in some type of altercation,
and West Lafayette police were called to
Where Else, Sparger said.

Byrd's arrest on suspicion of public
intoxication came when an Indiana State
Police trooper happened to be driving by,
Sparger said. Byrd was the only person
involved in the disturbance who was
arrested.

Sparger said the investigation is still
ongoing to determine what exactly
 happened.

Byrd, a junior, was booked into the
Tippecanoe County Jail about 3:35 a.m. F
riday and released five hours later.

Purdue head coach Matt Painter said this
morning that he was still gathering
information about Byrd's arrest. He will
determine within the next 24 to 36 hours
what disciplinary action may apply.

Byrd, a native of Crawfordsville and
graduate of North Montgomery High School,
is studying organizational leadership and
supervision at Purdue.

FYI the above is the article at the Indy Star website as of this afternoon.

Purdue's Byrd arrested for public intoxication

My sources on the Purdue campus say that this was just a situation where a group of guys having a couple of harmless beers turned horribly wrong. According to published reports, these fellas were viewing the Wisconsin/ Michigan State game and things went downhill from there. Every Badger missed shot required this Byrd dude to down a brew and by the 10 minute mark in the 2nd half, Wisconsin had clanked 26 jumpers. Needless to say, Byrdy was flying high by then which resulted in his arrest later on.

Pressure is on for Painter to balance control and discipline over wanting to win.  Think he is going to have to sit Byrd for the game or face some real criticism.  I don't envy Painter today...Byrd...major screw up.

Purdue's Byrd arrested for public intoxication

Come on DJ, did we not learn anything from the shenanigans of one Kelsey Barlow last season?  Anyone can make a mistake, but this is just about the worst part of the season for a contributing player to be out on disciplinary actions.
