Karl Hess ejects Tom Gugliotta

UPDATE, 10:18 p.m.: ACC supervisor of officials, John Clougherty, released a statement:
"Under Rule 10, when circumstances warrant, an official has the authority to request home game management to eject fans when the behavior, in the officials' judgement, is extreme or excessive. It's unfortunate in this instance that ACC protocol of communicating directly with the home game management was not followed, and instead, a building security officer was solicited. We will re-communicate this policy with all officials to ensure proper protocol is followed."

It's time for Karl Hess to go.

The veteran referee tossed former N.C. State stars Tom Gugliotta and Chris Corchiani with about six minutes left in the 76-62 loss to Florida State on Saturday afternoon.

"There were seven or eight different calls we were contesting," Corchiani told "We were yelling, but we didn't even yell a profanity or even threaten him."

Hess, who has already worked 74 games this season, declined to comment when approached after the game by an Associated Press reporter. Corchiani said he was with his wife and 11-year-old daughter while Gugliotta and his 14-year-old daughter were sitting next to them in the front row.

"We're not denying we were all over him, but I've been doing that every game I've been at since I retired," said Corchiani, who said he attends just about every N.C. State game. "That's homecourt advantage. But again, we never used profanity or crossed the line. We were just on him about some of the calls he made."

Corchiani said that Hess had to game stopped earlier and tried to have another fan ejected. Then after the 6-foot-10 Gugliotta stood out and yelled something at Hess from just a handful of feet away, Hess went to a police officer and had both former N.C. State stars escorted out of the building.

"It was wild," Corchiani said.

I'm not one to complain about bad calls.

I am one to post hilarious videos of puffy-chested officials throwing out local legends at basketball games. That's what Karl Hess did Saturday afternoon when he gave beloved N.C. State alums Tom Gugliotta (Googs!) and Chris Corchiani the hook.

NFL senior blogger Will Brinson -- an absolutely insufferable Wolfpack alum and homer -- was ready and waiting for this. A hat tip to him for promptly getting us the video. As for Hess, unless what Googs and Corchiani were saying was highly offensive, this is pretty bad. Just another zebra with an ego trip and a penchant for the spotlight. It's getting old, nearly as old as him.

UPDATE: Corchiani tweeted that he didn't use profanity, and even the Florida State assistant AD admitted he didn't believe the two should've been thrown out.

What a joke! That is like a police officer or a security cop ejecting a player from a game because of elbow or he threw a puch. It is like a coach telling the band what to play. What's next is going to take contraception away from women!

When you can hear better than you can dont need to be officiating ACC basketball. I can't stand state and I wouldn't poor water on dook if it was on fire - so I'm not the most unbiased on this subject. Officiating in the ACC has been skewed towards Dook for so long it is ashame. I'm a UNC fan and I have to admit we have had our share of skewed games in our favor as well. But Dook owns the striped ones! State got hosed with the calls in the duke game. Only 3 fouls in the Plumlee boys but have of state's team had 3-4 fouls shortly after halftime. Duke had a remarkable comeback and you have to tip your hat to that. But it is wickedly biased officiating and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see it. Hess is terrible. Corchoanni and gugs are not the classiest guys on the planet but there is no excuse for what Hess did today. He should be terminated. Getting heckled is part of the job of being a ref. especially refs who insist on being a bigger part of the game than necessary. Get them some cotton earplugs or get refs that can see and are unbiased.

The ACC has been corrupt in it's officiating for a number of years.  NCSU usually gets the worst of it, but anyone who plays Duke or UNC starts 10 points down.  Swofford looks after his former employeer UNC and his buddies at Duke.  NCSU along with FSU, Clemson, VT and other ought to exit the ACC and start a new league focused on football.

Hess hates Carolina too.  We have been complaining about him for years.

Maybe if you actually had a basketball team you wouldn't be down to Puke and Carolina before the game started...Hess is an idiot but your post puts you right up there with him.

Hess just confirmed what ACC fans already know - The officials have a personal agenda.  This begs the question if Hess was so caught up in what was going on in the stands, how could he concentrate on what was taking place on the floor?

Hess embarassed two legends, embarrassed NC State, & the ACC. A suspension or an apology (that Hess will have nothing to do with, it will be a written statement from the ACC) is not enough.  Any punishment less than never officiating an ACC game again is an injustice to Corchiani, Googs!, NC State, and the conference.

Hess sticks it to Duke every chance he gets and has even made jokes about it.  Hard to believe he intentionally helped the boys in blue unless he was just screwing-up more than usual.

Karl Hess is the guy who should have been tossed...The NCAA should get rid of him...

Hess always officiates like he's angry. And he also officiates a disproportionately high number of Duke games every year. Check the record. He almost single-handedly brought Duke back to victory in their loss to Miami a few weeks ago. The ACC and the NCAA really need to get this guy in line. It's been going on for far too long now. And he seems to think that the games are about him, not the players. Pathetic.
