Stephen F. Austin won at Lamar earlier this week.

The final score was 62-52.

"It was just a bad game," said Lamar senior Mike James, at which point his coach chimed in.

"OK, let's go," Pat Knight said while basically shooing James from the press conference. "You don't have a clue what it takes to win."

And it only got better from there.

Video: Harsh love

"I'm unhappy with these seniors," Knight said. "We've got the worst group of seniors right now that I've ever been associated with. Their mentality is awful. Their attitude is awful. ... To come into a game like this with no emotion, just flat, is terrible. It's unheard of. And I'm not gonna protect them."

And so he didn't.

"We've had problems with these guys on the court, off the court, classroom, drugs, being late for stuff. ... You can't do all that BS and then just expect to be a good team and win games," Knight added. "And if people have a problem with me being harsh about it, I don't care. I came here to clean something up."

Let me be the first to say I don't have a problem with Knight being harsh about it.

I love it.

I mean, I absolutely love it.

I talk to coaches all the time and lots of them hate their teams. They scout like hell, put in good stuff, then watch their idiot players act like idiots and screw things up. It's maddening. But so few ever publicly hold their players accountable. Tom Izzo will do it. Bob Huggins, too. But Pat Knight just took it to a new level, and if he's spent his entire first year at Lamar struggling to get the attention of the players he inherited I'm guessing he finally has their attention now.

So good for him.

I wish more coaches would follow his lead.

This is not the NBA, after all, where coaches are paid to deal with egotistical professionals. This is college basketball. And if we're gonna spend time talking about the so-called father-son relationship that exists between a college coach and a college player, what's wrong with a college coach holding his college players accountable the same way a father might hold his sons accountable?

Nothing, I say.

Pat Knight just made it clear to his players that he's finished covering for them.

I mess up, it's on me.

You mess up, it's on you.

There's a lesson there to be learned.

And I bet his problematic seniors have finally learned it.

"These kids are stealing money being on scholarship with their approach," Knight said. "They need to grow up."

Pat sounds just like his boring ol' father, and his father is a closed minded bully.  If he does not like something, he chooses to avoid it or ignore it, just the way a spoiled child might when he does not get his way.  How do you explain his silence anytime the topic of Kentucky basketball comes around?  He never says anything, and often times will be contrary when he does open his mouth.  On ESPN he is paid to give insight, not have an agenda, but he does not seem to have the self-control to do so.  Pat probably feels good doing what he did, but if I was a father to one of those kids, I would have my elbow in his throat about 5 minutes after the news conference.  Leadership is sometimes not saying something, even if you really want to, but that would just be too un-Knightly for Pat, or his father.

Coach Bob Knight is loved and considered a great mentor by 95 percent of the kids that stuck around his program, maybe. He was a megalomaniacal, embarrassingly violent jerk to those he didn't like and drummed out of his system. So overall that 95 percent number one poster stated as a guess is skewed. Coach K is a Knight disciple who showed that alot of knights bullying techniques are unnecessary.

Pat Knight: Is anyone really surprised?

Whether PKnight is technically right or NOT about these young men is 100%, COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT.  As i type, he says, "We have to SQUEEZE everything we can from these guys!"  Seriously?  NO, Pat, we have problems b/c people like you blame everyone else but themselves (YOURSELF) for the problem.  Maybe, just maybe, they don't know how to lead b/c THEY don't have anyone setting an example for them.  B/c if this is your idea of 'leading' then what you are getting back in return makes sense.

If they are really THAT bad, CUT THEM.  You are the coach.  And move from his lips, "Shoved up against a locker w/ a forearm in your NECK"!?!  Seriously?  That's your example and what you hold up as a GOOD example of leadership?  Son, you are a far cry from your father.  And your father wasn't much to start.  And you are living proof.

Attempting to throw this all under the 'these kids act like babies' bus is just pathetic.  Your leadership style is, apparently, throwing young men under the bus.  Nothing wrong with calling young men out but do it with some class.  Take some responsibility for yourself.  You act as if you have ZERO impact on this situation.  And IF that is the case, then what in the world are you doing there?...getting paid for?

Finally, just b/c your dad was a CBB coach and it was the easiest road for you to take to riches, does NOT mean you should be doing it!
i feel sorry for you, Pat.  This clearly is not your life's mission.  The sooner you realize that and move on to find YOUR life's mission the better...FOR YOU!

Although his short tenure at Texas Tech can be viewed as a disappointment, Pat put his fathers wisdom on display. His words spoke volumes. Too many of these kids are babied all their lives due to their athletic dexterities and it turns them into prima donnas before they're even getting paid. It's cocaches like these that I have the most respect for. Coaches who want to win but won't sell their values to do it, like a Bob Knight or a John Wooden. Basically the exact opposite of John Calipari. I hope Pat Knight finds success at Lamar.

Santa Claus, 2 reasons why he doesn't do that. 1. He has 6 seniors on the's gonna be tough to compete with anyone when you are only playing 9 players. 2. the kids he has right now might not "fit into his system." keep in mind, it's his first year at Lamar, so he's playing with what he inherited.

to everyone on the board saying that he stems from Bob Kinght, who "isn't a good person" you even know what former players said about Bob Knight? 95% of his players said he was probably the best mentor he ever had. the fact that people can't deal with a coach that yells at players anymore is a big reason why people in this country are so soft now. you never hear people claiming about Woody Hayes being a bad person, because his demeanor was publicly accepted when he coached. Bob Knight turned boys into men and I have an idea his son wants to do the same thing at Lamar. kudos to coach Pat Knight.

Here's an idea. If you have that many issues with the seniors, put them on the bench and play the kids that "fit into your system."
If you want to see a change in the team and the culture, either kick the seniors off the team or bench them. That would definitely send a message to all the players.

Wahhhh..Poor kids... Pamper them.... Its this type of attitude that is weakening our society. If you knew Basketball, Pat Knight is a good and up and coming coach. Not because of who his dad is.. Learn sports and grow a pair.

ChadHop is the reason society is going down the tubes. Go ahead and protect the thugs who are in college just to try and make it to the NBA. If they weren't on a basketball court they would be sitting in a jail cell somewhere.

Very interesting.  Good for Pat Knight.  His dad was arguably the best coach college basketball has ever seen.
