Buzz wins at WVU, dances to Country Roads

Marquette coach Buzz Williams suspended three players for the first half, fell behind by 15 points in the second half and yet he still, somehow, figured out a way to escape West Virginia with a 61-60 victory late Friday.

And then he danced.

Right there in the middle of the court.

To "Country Roads."

"I wasn't trying to be disrespectful," Williams told ESPN's Bill Raftery moments later. "I'm very happy and pleased."

As well he should've been because it's not often a coach can teach a lesson and still win a big game, but that's what Williams managed to do at West Virginia. He suspended Darius Johnson-Odom, Vander Blue and Junior Cadougan for the first half -- and Todd Mayo for the second half -- because of a violation of team rules, which left the 10th-ranked Golden Eagles with just six players available for the opening 20 minutes. Predictably, they fell behind by double-digits. But then Jae Crowder (26 points) got going and Johnson-Odom, Blue and Cadougan combined for 23 second-half points to help Marquette erase the deficit and record its school-record 13th Big East victory.

And then Buzz danced.

Right there in the middle of the court.

To "Country Roads."

And it was hilarious ... especially when some West Virginia fans had to be restrained. Things were close to getting wild, which is not something Williams anticipated. He explained his actions afterward by saying he was  just overly excited and dancing in the moment to a song he heard that reminded him of his childhood in Texas. It didn't register with Williams that "Country Roads" is West Virginia's song until the fans were already irate, and Williams told CBSSports.com late Friday that he regretted his celebration and how it came off.

"Emotional response and very unprofessional," Williams texted to CBSSports.com. "I apologized. I was just excited."

Typical overreaction. It is unbelievable that minor things like this can cause people to lose their minds. This was a basketball game, it was not anything life or death related. A coach dances for 2 seconds on your floor and the student body goes irate, throws things at the coach, and have to be restrained. You stay classy WVU.

Buzz is  a good man and a great coach.  Period.  However, he made a mistake dancing on the floor.  He said so.  Let it be.

5 Years and 2 coaches ago...just like a Pitt fan to live in the past.

No. 2 WVU is a 28.5 point favorite at home against unranked Pitt and is on their way to the National Title game...and loses.  EPSNU votes it as the Game of the Year.

Some things are just too good to forget.

This was priceless! The real reason these drunken students were so upset was that old Buzz was pretty good on the dance floor and they could only dream of being that light on their feet. These punks let 2 little security guys stop them from exacting some revenge on the Buzzer. Come on Mountaineer fan; you get yourself worked into a lather by some middle-aged dude 2-stepping to "Country Roads?" WEAK! Now if he was on the floor moon-walking to the classic West Virginia tune, "Mama and her Moonshine", then it would be go time. Can't wait to see Huggy Bear waltzing to "New York, New York" @ the Big East tourney. By the way Coach Huggins; don't even think of "busting a move" to "Deep in the Heart of Texas" next season when you play in the Lone Star State. Those folks will string you up by the time you get back to the locker room.

West Virginia = Trash

And they ALL know it....Just ask the town of thousands of trailers across the street from their football stadium.

Funny, the last time I was in Morgantown, I didn't see a single trailer anywhere near Mountaineer Field.  State of the art medical research facilities yes...trailers no.

No wonder WVU students enjoy their "Eat $hit Pitt" chant after their victories over Pitt...which have been quite numerous.

By the way, social-class stereotyping really isn't much different from racism.
If you'd stand appalled that somebody said one of these teams was nothing but a bunch of n-----s, I'd remind you ... calling somebody trailer trash is just as harmful.

Thanks for the education John Hightower.  I always thought West Virginia's motto was "land of 3,000,000 people and 4 family trees" or "moonshine fer every man, skoal fer every woman".

Thanks for putting your ignorance on display.
