Buzz wins at WVU, dances to Country Roads

Marquette coach Buzz Williams suspended three players for the first half, fell behind by 15 points in the second half and yet he still, somehow, figured out a way to escape West Virginia with a 61-60 victory late Friday.

And then he danced.

Right there in the middle of the court.

To "Country Roads."

"I wasn't trying to be disrespectful," Williams told ESPN's Bill Raftery moments later. "I'm very happy and pleased."

As well he should've been because it's not often a coach can teach a lesson and still win a big game, but that's what Williams managed to do at West Virginia. He suspended Darius Johnson-Odom, Vander Blue and Junior Cadougan for the first half -- and Todd Mayo for the second half -- because of a violation of team rules, which left the 10th-ranked Golden Eagles with just six players available for the opening 20 minutes. Predictably, they fell behind by double-digits. But then Jae Crowder (26 points) got going and Johnson-Odom, Blue and Cadougan combined for 23 second-half points to help Marquette erase the deficit and record its school-record 13th Big East victory.

And then Buzz danced.

Right there in the middle of the court.

To "Country Roads."

And it was hilarious ... especially when some West Virginia fans had to be restrained. Things were close to getting wild, which is not something Williams anticipated. He explained his actions afterward by saying he was  just overly excited and dancing in the moment to a song he heard that reminded him of his childhood in Texas. It didn't register with Williams that "Country Roads" is West Virginia's song until the fans were already irate, and Williams told CBSSports.com late Friday that he regretted his celebration and how it came off.

"Emotional response and very unprofessional," Williams texted to CBSSports.com. "I apologized. I was just excited."

She grew up in a Indiana town.
Had a good lookin' mama who never was around.
But she grew up tall and she grew up right.
With them Indiana boys on an Indiana night.

Great Tom Petty song, but if I was an IU guy, I don't think I'd claim that one either.

Thanks for the education John Hightower.  I always thought West Virginia's motto was "land of 3,000,000 people and 4 family trees" or "moonshine fer every man, skoal fer every woman".

who cares about which state wanted who.. thats not the topic here

Sure it is ... well, no, it's not. It's about dairy cattle and slavery and what to call people who don't like John Denver songs.

Stop confusing this with basketball.

He was excited so he danced at half court?  What a jacka.s.s.!  But everyone's an idiot from time to time and he apologized because he understood he shouldn't have done it.  Time to move on......unfortunately it's on to the NIT.

At Indiana, we don't claim any song that says Indiana in just for the hell of it.

Indiana wants me
But I can't go back there

If I came from Indiana, I don't think I'd want to claim that song either.

My dear markram!

I even wrote that my comment was tongue in cheek for imbusiles like yourself.
Imbusiles? Really? Ironic that in targeting someone's lack of intelligence you managed to misspell imbecile. Apparently the University of Wisconsin needs to increase funding for its remedial readin' and writin' program.

I wonder what you would have done if Legendary Al Maguirre would have dont the jig on your scorers table like has happened to other schools.
I assume you mean Al McGuire....Al Maguirre is the gap-toothed fellow who changes oil at my service station.

Grow up, your flint locks don't scare anyone, but your lack of intelligence does. Stay in WV, please...
Yes, the folks of West Virginia would do well to fashion their state after the cultured, enlightened people of Wisconsin. Why, each time I cross the border into your cheese-encrusted paradise I have a brief moment where I believe I'm in Paris! Your romantic interludes with dairy cattle aside, there are more bib-overall wearing gents in your part of the world than anywhere in West Virginia.

If I were a WV fan, I'd be waaay more angrier at my team for blowing a 15 point lead.  If WV wins, Buzz doesn't dance.  Pretty simple.  Speaking of not dancing, doesn't that loss bring WV to 7-9 in conference play?  Hmmm.  Sounds like a #1 or #2 seed in the NIT.
