Buzz wins at WVU, dances to Country Roads

Marquette coach Buzz Williams suspended three players for the first half, fell behind by 15 points in the second half and yet he still, somehow, figured out a way to escape West Virginia with a 61-60 victory late Friday.

And then he danced.

Right there in the middle of the court.

To "Country Roads."

"I wasn't trying to be disrespectful," Williams told ESPN's Bill Raftery moments later. "I'm very happy and pleased."

As well he should've been because it's not often a coach can teach a lesson and still win a big game, but that's what Williams managed to do at West Virginia. He suspended Darius Johnson-Odom, Vander Blue and Junior Cadougan for the first half -- and Todd Mayo for the second half -- because of a violation of team rules, which left the 10th-ranked Golden Eagles with just six players available for the opening 20 minutes. Predictably, they fell behind by double-digits. But then Jae Crowder (26 points) got going and Johnson-Odom, Blue and Cadougan combined for 23 second-half points to help Marquette erase the deficit and record its school-record 13th Big East victory.

And then Buzz danced.

Right there in the middle of the court.

To "Country Roads."

And it was hilarious ... especially when some West Virginia fans had to be restrained. Things were close to getting wild, which is not something Williams anticipated. He explained his actions afterward by saying he was  just overly excited and dancing in the moment to a song he heard that reminded him of his childhood in Texas. It didn't register with Williams that "Country Roads" is West Virginia's song until the fans were already irate, and Williams told CBSSports.com late Friday that he regretted his celebration and how it came off.

"Emotional response and very unprofessional," Williams texted to CBSSports.com. "I apologized. I was just excited."

As for Buzz, I don't think he intended to be disrespectful.  He is a high-energy guy, and was justifiably excited about picking up a big road win despite benching players for breaking team rules.  It was a real coup to do the right thing from a disciplinary standpoint, and still get the W.  When he realized he had upset some kids, he apologized.  Classy guy, as opposed to the Wisconsin blowhards on this thread tossing out pathetic stereotypical insults.

Empathizing with West Va. fans, I would've been riled up too. Esepcially if I had a little booze in me. This guy is a head coach at a div. 1 school in a major conference thats top ten in the nation right now, and yet he acted completely negligent of his title. Act like you've done it before buzz. I'd fully expect this from a player. But the head coach? Lead by example man.

Virginia didn't want?

You have that backwards.  West Virginia's state motto is "Mountainers always free".  It doesn't make any reference to skin color, region, or anything else.  We didn't believe in fighting for slavery like Virginia did.

I may bash other fans, but I don't care much for moronic stereotypes.  Especially ones that are far from the truth.  But you wouldn't really know about that, would you?  For what it's worth, I think the students at WVU overreacted.  It is much ado about nothing. I wrote nothing to justify their outrage.  All I did was react to the ignorant, stereotypical comments from you and another arrogant Wisconsinite.  Are you folks are so small that you need to put others down in order to feel better about your miserable existence?  But hey, I'm a Buckeye and I'm looking forward to the beat-down your Badgers are going to get tomorrow in Columbus.

To praphrase the line from Blazing Saddles....

Badgers!?!  We don't need no stinking Badgers!!!

As a fan of neither team, but watching because I had a buck or 2 on it. I did think that Buzz's reactions were disrespectful... I know I would be if I were a diehard WVU fan at the game. But with that being said, it was a very good game. However, in my opinion if Marquette hadnt suspended some of their starters to begin with, I doubt it would have been that close.. And in turn, Buzz wouldnt have danced around like an idiot because they won by a hair. He probably wouldnt have done that if it were a blow out like it should have been.

I am still trying to understand how a lawsuit against a university has anything to do with a dozen WVa fans being "riled" because a coach showed a hint of emotion for winning a game on the road.

Yeah, it's been a long winter.

Yeah, that really explains why the Big East filed a lawsuit to keep WVU in their conference for another 2 years.  Pinhead.

Yet another thoughtful, well-reasoned comment on a message board. Refreshing! Innocent

The Big East lawsuit against the University of Western Virginia was less about a desire to rub elbows with them for an additional two years than about scheduling and gaining leverage in negotiations.

More proof on why West Virginia fans are the worst fans in the nation. These students are ready to attack the coach for dancing to a song that they claim is their "school song." In what way is this their school song? Because it says "West Virginia" in it? At Indiana, we don't claim any song that says Indiana in just for the hell of it. Second, he even apologized and acted professionally after he didn't realize it was their "school song," and WVU fans are still up in arms. Bottom line, your team didn't take care of business against a team that was missing some of their best players for a half. Don't cry. Take care of business next time and don't give the coach something to be happy about. He can dance to whatever song he wants to.
