Buzz wins at WVU, dances to Country Roads

Marquette coach Buzz Williams suspended three players for the first half, fell behind by 15 points in the second half and yet he still, somehow, figured out a way to escape West Virginia with a 61-60 victory late Friday.

And then he danced.

Right there in the middle of the court.

To "Country Roads."

"I wasn't trying to be disrespectful," Williams told ESPN's Bill Raftery moments later. "I'm very happy and pleased."

As well he should've been because it's not often a coach can teach a lesson and still win a big game, but that's what Williams managed to do at West Virginia. He suspended Darius Johnson-Odom, Vander Blue and Junior Cadougan for the first half -- and Todd Mayo for the second half -- because of a violation of team rules, which left the 10th-ranked Golden Eagles with just six players available for the opening 20 minutes. Predictably, they fell behind by double-digits. But then Jae Crowder (26 points) got going and Johnson-Odom, Blue and Cadougan combined for 23 second-half points to help Marquette erase the deficit and record its school-record 13th Big East victory.

And then Buzz danced.

Right there in the middle of the court.

To "Country Roads."

And it was hilarious ... especially when some West Virginia fans had to be restrained. Things were close to getting wild, which is not something Williams anticipated. He explained his actions afterward by saying he was  just overly excited and dancing in the moment to a song he heard that reminded him of his childhood in Texas. It didn't register with Williams that "Country Roads" is West Virginia's song until the fans were already irate, and Williams told CBSSports.com late Friday that he regretted his celebration and how it came off.

"Emotional response and very unprofessional," Williams texted to CBSSports.com. "I apologized. I was just excited."

He just signed a contract extension. Boeheim is the class of the nation. Dummy's like you should unplug your keyboard so you don't show your ignorance.

that's what happens whenyou have a "fight song" why shouldn't universities be more original.  For example our "fight song" of my alma mater KU isn't a song at all really its a chant...and try dancing to that...you practically can't therefore you can't insult the student base that way...of course there are others but getting upset at a "fight song" really?  gimme a break...was it a bit tasteless and low brow...probably thoughtless, yes...but worth getting your panties in a bunch...go study for your exams or something next week lol and puh lease focus on more important things in your life WVU fans...plus embrace that next year you're in a real conference like the Big 12 something that MArquette, their fans, and alums can't claim lol :) WVU fans if you're going to be part of the Big 12 time to show some true class and grow up so you can set at the adults table....

Rock Chalk Jayhawk - wow that is intimidating.  You do know a jayhawk is a fictional bird right?  As far as showing more class and sitting at the adults table, does that require orchestrating a ticket scalping scam to disgrace our university like your beloved alma mater?

Typical WVU fans.  They are the worst fans in sports.  They take any opportunity to start something with a visiting opponent.  I am not saying the coach was right, but for fans to have to be restrained shows the mentality of the WVU fans.  Yet another example of how pathetic they are.

I am all for fun and celebrating victories but classless flaunting to torment your opponent or fans is a Buzzhead move.

Really, who gives two S.H.I.T.S about WV anyway... This will be about the last time they will have any kind of basketball team and they suck at that... Nice win for Marquette and thats how you play ball inbreads...

Wow!  As I read other comments I can see I'm in the minority about Buzz Williams actions after the game.  I wonder if the posters that see nothing wrong with what Williams did would feel the same way if he had done this against their team?  I certainly wouldn't as it just doesn't show a any class.  I'm not saying Coach Williams is a bad person or a classless guy.  He's obviously emotional and was caught up in the moment.  He's probably a great guy with a great sense of humor.  However,  his actions in the moment were definitely uncalled for.  I really wasn't paying attention to what the West Virginia fans were doing and don't condone any of their actions.  Coach Williams drew all of my attention to him by what he was doing (and the cameras had him center stage).  I'm sure this is probably big news on the sports television networks.

The reason the players were suspended only a half is that the Marquette roster was already down to 8 active players with Otule and Gardner both out.  You can't go with only 4 players...so he sat them a half.  Nice comeback win again.  WV has no guard play and they never worked the ball into Jones...he should have shined at home against an undersized and undermanned Marquette team.  Instead, we saw the conyinued emergence of Crowder as a darkhorse BE Player of the Year choice.  If the final two regular season games play out with Crowder filling it up and Jones slipping,  I think a co-POY is a real possibility.   Oh ya, one last thought, I forgot to mention,  I HATE NOTRE DAME !
