Buzz wins at WVU, dances to Country Roads

Marquette coach Buzz Williams suspended three players for the first half, fell behind by 15 points in the second half and yet he still, somehow, figured out a way to escape West Virginia with a 61-60 victory late Friday.

And then he danced.

Right there in the middle of the court.

To "Country Roads."

"I wasn't trying to be disrespectful," Williams told ESPN's Bill Raftery moments later. "I'm very happy and pleased."

As well he should've been because it's not often a coach can teach a lesson and still win a big game, but that's what Williams managed to do at West Virginia. He suspended Darius Johnson-Odom, Vander Blue and Junior Cadougan for the first half -- and Todd Mayo for the second half -- because of a violation of team rules, which left the 10th-ranked Golden Eagles with just six players available for the opening 20 minutes. Predictably, they fell behind by double-digits. But then Jae Crowder (26 points) got going and Johnson-Odom, Blue and Cadougan combined for 23 second-half points to help Marquette erase the deficit and record its school-record 13th Big East victory.

And then Buzz danced.

Right there in the middle of the court.

To "Country Roads."

And it was hilarious ... especially when some West Virginia fans had to be restrained. Things were close to getting wild, which is not something Williams anticipated. He explained his actions afterward by saying he was  just overly excited and dancing in the moment to a song he heard that reminded him of his childhood in Texas. It didn't register with Williams that "Country Roads" is West Virginia's song until the fans were already irate, and Williams told CBSSports.com late Friday that he regretted his celebration and how it came off.

"Emotional response and very unprofessional," Williams texted to CBSSports.com. "I apologized. I was just excited."

Yeah. WVU fans wouldn not have handled regular football ass-handings well either had they been invited to the SEC.

Buzz wins at WVU, dances to Country Roads

I just happened to be watching this game with the sound off before going to bed.  I'm a fan of neither team so the only thing that caught my interest is that it was a close game and I know that Marquette is ranked.  I knew nothing about the suspensions.  What I saw at the end of the game was quite surprising to me.  I'm a Michigan State fan and am used to Coach Izzo going over and shaking the other coaches and players hands at the end of the game.  I've seen coaches get excited when their team wins a game but nothing like the dance the Marquette coach did.  Just my opinion but I felt it was immature and unprofessional.  I just couldn't imagine Coach Izzo or any other veteran coaches (Krzyzewski, Pittino, Roy Williams, Self, etc.) doing something like that.  Buzz Williams is pretty young (39) and I think he will learn from what happened last night.  He is fairly new as a head coach and hasn't yet experienced what it is like to win a championship in a major conference or go to a final four.  He did the right thing by apologizing for his actions.  With the sound off on the television it was really quite a bizarre thing to watch.  My first thought was should he really be doing this especially on the opponents home court.  I can see why the West Virginia fans were upset after such close loss.  It coould have been taken as adding salt to the wound but he probably was just excited and got carried away.

What is all the "BUZZ" about over this. The coach made hard decisions and did what a good coach does- sits key player for disciplinary reasons at a time when every game is key, still manages to win the game, and then gets excited afterwards. What did you want him to do WV fans, hang his head and walk across the floor with a frown? And the students in the background should have put their tail between their legs and headed back to ther dorms. I mean, whats with the fist pumping and puffing of the chest? Were they thinking of bull rushing Buzz? If you're gonna be mad at someone, get mad at your own team for blowing a double digit lead in a gmae played for the most part against the second string!

The students reaction was priceless. You'd have thought he pulled out his junk and and "evacuated" himself at center court. Good thing they now check for batteries at WVU!!!  Tongue out

So, is WVU filled with a bunch of Southern Baptists? Buzz is a 'homeboy' and felt at home with his favorite childhood song, can you blame him for having a little fun. Even though he was caught up in the moment after an emotional win, he did admit what he did was not the best. But would he have apologized if the student section reacted differently? I think it was perfectly fine. He didnt stomp on the logo at center court, he didnt taunt the crowd.....the man just danced. Is dancing so bad?

No story here, Buzz is a class act!  Who would think that West Virginia's fight song would be playing 2 minutes after the team loses, a little late for that wouldn't ya think?
