Kidd-Gilchrist: I'm staying at Kentucky

Don't write off the idea that Kidd-Gilchrist would return for his sophomore season. (US Presswire)

It’s around this time every year when we start to see some of the top players in the country swear they’re returning to college next season. And then, come April, they go pro anyway.

As a result, most people took Michael Kidd-Gilchrist’s comments after Kentucky’s win over Vanderbilt with a grain of salt.

“I’m graduating here. I’m not going nowhere. I’m staying at Kentucky,” Kidd-Gilchrist said, according to Brett Dawson of Rivals.com. “I’m dead serious. I don’t know why y’all laughing.”

Will Kidd-Gilchrist definitely return to school? I have no idea. I wouldn’t doubt that he’s thinking about it, though.

Kidd-Gilchrist is just wired differently than most of the star freshmen and college players these days. He’s always been that way. He has never truly carried himself like a superstar, and even his skillset doesn’t resemble that of a typical “future NBA All-Star.” Kidd-Gilchrist outworks players, he outhustles players and he’s a winner above everything else.

If Anthony Davis had said the same thing about returning to school, would I believe him? Not a chance. He’s the No. 1 pick in the draft.

Kidd-Gilchrist has moved all the way up to No. 3 in several mock drafts, but I don’t think he’s overly concerned with that. He’s not the kind of player who will regress with another year in college. Kidd-Gilchrist doesn’t have a ton of people feeding him all sorts of conflicting information; he has a good support team around him that will help him make the right decision.

Like I said, do I think Kidd-Gilchrist is a lock to return to Kentucky for his sophomore season? No. But I certainly wouldn’t write off the idea when it comes to him.

Kidd-Gilchrist: I'm staying at Kentucky

Didn't all the media types say Terrence Jones was a lottery pick and would be going pro last year?  Yeah I think I remember that.  Media writers have to say something I guess but it does seem they would pay more attention to what goes on before they shoot off their mouths.  Just like the play by play announcers in the Vandy game talking about how well Teague has played in the last "seven games".  Yeah right.  The guy has been playing great for the last 23 games but they have their script and their sticking to it.  They write that script after 4 games and you'd never know anything ever changes during the season if you listen to their stupidity.

Will MKG come back next year?  Could be.  Look at UNC and Duke.  They keep players around for years.  But as always CBS doesn't want UK to do things that will make them better.  But this time I don't agree with MKG staying at UK.  I'm as much of a UK fan as anyone and have been for 45 years.  But just like Jones, MKG's stock could go down if he stays.  He will have a ton of competition at his position next year.  If he can be the #3 pick he needs to go.  He owes it to his family and himself.  What if he gets injured?  I'm not so selfish I'd want a player to give up all that money to stay at UK.  Cal will fill the bench with more players.  He always does.  I really think the world of MKG.  That's why I don't want to see him make a mistake.  Take the money Michael.  You can get your degree on your own time later.  Cal isn't so selfish that he would try to talk him into staying either.  He tore up the scholarship of a player who wanted to stay at Memphis but should go pro.  He told him he should put money in his own pocket instead of Cal's pocket.  He was right too.  It's the right thing to do.  That has a lot to do with why Cal brings in a parade of top talent too.  Players know he will tell them what they should really do and not try to take advantage of them like they do at Duke and UNC.

Wow, Jeff.  You could be a talking head at ESPN the way you just basically called MKG a liar for saying he will return to UK for his sophomore season. What is it about today's sports writers that think they have the right to do this?  Is it simply that you would rather see a kid go pro and forego an education? If so, that's very sad.  You should be ashamed.

MKG, Davis, Teague, Lamb, Jones, Wiltjer, Hood, Beckham, Polson, will ALL be back next season looking to repeat! Add Harrow, Goodwin, Poythress, & Cauley...WOW!!!  If Noel signs on...look out 1976 undefeated Hoosiers!!! Heck, UK might end up being a 4 or 5 seed in the NBA Eastern Conference Playoffs with that roster!

That was 5 first round draft picks 2 years ago, not 4. Don't sell us short there uofl fan. And the repeat national championship thing is what they call a "hypothetical", as was the Nerlens Noel replacing Davis. But as of right now those hypotheticals are looking pretty good from what I'm seeing. But I guess people take everything literal on here.
