The Poll Attacks: Voter drops KU, just because

Associated Press poll: Fletcher Mackel had Kansas ranked fourth last week.

That was a little high at the time, in my opinion.

But whatever.

I could live with it because after Kentucky and Syracuse the next few spots were up for debate, and KU at No. 4 wasn't unreasonable. So I left Fletcher alone and focused my attention on the 15 AP voters who inexplicably left Indiana off their ballots. But now I have to highlight Fletcher because he's confusing the hell out of me. Again, he had Kansas fourth last week. The Jayhawks then won at Texas A&M and beat Missouri to claim at least a share of the Big 12 title, and now Fletcher has Bill Self's team ranked ... seventh?

Yes, seventh.

So this might be the first time in the history of AP voting that a man has dropped a team three spots after a 2-0 week that featured a win over a Top 10 opponent. Fletcher had Kansas ahead of everybody except Kentucky, Syracuse and Missouri last week. Now he's got Kansas behind Kentucky, Syracuse, Duke, Michigan State, North Carolina and Marquette -- meaning Duke, Michigan State, North Carolina and Marquette all jumped the Jayhawks after the Jayhawks' perfect and impressive week. Following tha logic, my guess is that KU will beat Oklahoma State and Texas this week, win the outright Big 12 title and then fall behind Georgetown, Wisconsin and UNLV on Fletcher's ballot next Monday, at which point Fletcher will also drop Thomas Robinson to Third Team All-American because all this playing well and winning isn't really that impressive.

Coaches poll: Mississippi State has lost five straight games and four of them have come to unranked opponents. So of course the Bulldogs are still getting five points in the coaches poll. That makes sense, right?

Listen, I know coaches are busy this time of the year.

I'm busy this time of the year.

But it's not difficult to click on and realize the Bulldogs are now a 10-loss team with seven losses to unranked schools, and it doesn't take much time to click on and see that Rick Stansbury's team has dropped five straight, including a 67-50 decision on Saturday to a nine-loss Alabama team. I'm talking seconds, not minutes. And yet there are still some men somewhere putting Mississippi State on a Top 25 ballot.

Even Mississippi State fans think that's dumb.

Renardo Sidney has punched teammates for things less stupid.

I understand that some feel KU's win came with help from calls...but...reminder that Mizz(who) was awarded the same calls in their win in Columbia...both teams favored from home court calls.  Hopefully they will make a third match-up in the Big 12 tournament on a neutral site and settle this once and for all...after all, even some us of KU fans are sad to see this great rivalry disappear!  Calls or no calls...they have both been great games this year to end the rivalry.

I didn't mention in my comment how much UNC beat MSU by at all. So my facts are not wrong because I bring that up. I just said that MSU has lost to UNC in all those instances I listed.

I gather that Fletcher Mackel actually watched the MU-KU game and didn't think the Jayhawks won the game on their own.

You can certainly make the argument for NC and Duke to be ahead of MSU based on the head-to-heads, but MSU has played the second hardest schedule by RPI and SOS and they seem to be peaking at the right time.  And your facts are wrong, NC beat MSU by 12, not 20.  Their 5 losses have been by a COMBINED 26 points, including two 1 point losses on the road that could have gone either way.

This isn't the same Spartan team that started 0-2.

I'm more surprised about Kansas being ranked ahead of MSU, the only argument I see there is that they were up there longer and haven't lost.  Their resume isn't as good in my opinion.  Just look at MSU's road wins.  No one has beaten more ranked teams on the road...and it's not even close.

WHY dont you have    HARVARD  ranked?
Why would Harvard be ranked? They have lost twice to teams in the Ivy League (Princeton and Penn). They are not even alone in 1st place in the Ivy any more. One more loss, and they may be watching the NCAA tournament. And you think that they should be ranked?
With their weak schedule, Murray State needed to be perfect to be highly ranked. They weren't, so they aren't.

My main disagreement with the AP Poll is Michigan State being ranked ahead of UNC with more losses then UNC. I am also pretty sure MSU lost to UNC on top of an Aircraft carrier opening night of the NCAA season. All 4 of UNC losses are to teams in the top 25. Two of which were in the top 10 at the time of the loss. (Both losses by 1 point)

UNC could easilly only have 2 losses with both of those extra wins coming against #1 UK and #4 Duke right now. Sure UNC lost and whether its by a point or more is irrelevant a loss is a loss. But Michigan State has no business being ranked ahead of UNC. MSU lost to UNC in the 2005 Final Four the 2009 NCAA title 2010 ACC Big ten Challenge and beginning of this year on the Aircraft Carrier. I mean how many times does UNC have to play this school to prove they are better both Past and Present.

Let's bash Seth Davis who left Indiana off his ballot and ranked Drexel 17th and VCU 18th and Iowa State 25th. Makes absolutely 0 sense.

I completly agreee with Fletcher Mackel - Yes KU won the game against MZ, but for anyone who watched the game it was clear Missouri was the better team and Kansas reaped the benefits of an insane number of ticky tack fouls called against Missouri to get them in double bonus 10 minutes into the 2nd half - I thought Kansas was better than they showed me this weekend. I think MSU and Duke will reap the benefits of the is game both will get # 1 seeds and both Big 12 teams will fall to 3 2 with Marquette who jumped Ohio St, but no #2 will want to see the buckeyes as the 3 in their bracket

Would you rank a team who played 20 ranked teams and won only 10 for a 10-10 record
They have 10 losses, dont matter to who. Treat all DIV1 teams Equal and forget the SOS and
RPI crap. They are ruses to get everyone to believe only MAJOR conference SCHOOLS can play
this game and for that they GET all the REVENUS enhancements.  So you dont think Murray State
should be ranked because of their conference affliation prevends them from being GOOD. Do you
remember DAVIDSON...who beat big10 champ Wisconsin  and bigeast champ GEORGETOWN b4 losing
to the eventual big12 champ Kansas who won it all.  Guess not....So remember it's NOT WHO YOU PLAY
it's your  WON/LOSS record(to be fair and not biased) My poll says  Ken Sya and Murray St are tied for
number one because I am an honest non biased fan that knows that NOBODY KNOWS who the best of the
three are. All guesses and gut feeling. Only way is to PLAY.
